Digital photography and its technology can seem intimidating. Take the mystery out of using your digital camera and phone cameras during this live, online learning adventure with professional photographer Mason Marsh! Over the course of four days, learn how to take control of your camera, get instruction on how to take a more creative photo and discover what you can do with your images on a computer. You’ll even get lessons on the editing process and the tools needed to put the finishing touches on your pictures. Get to know your fellow Road Scholars as you engage in positive feedback sessions and opportunities to learn from one another’s photography. This course is geared toward novice photographers, but there will be opportunities for everyone to learn something here!

What You'll Learn

  • Enjoy engaging instruction on photography fundamentals with your instructor, Mason Marsh, and gain practical skills for controlling and using your camera.
  • Practice your new skills during daily homework assignments, and delight in the opportunity to receive helpful feedback during group critique sessions.
  • Get insight into basic digital image processing and learn about the many options for photo storage.

General Notes

You’ll enjoy 2-3 hours of daily instruction, discussion and/or group critiques, which includes sufficient breaks throughout the program. Please review the daily itinerary for start and end times to ensure you won’t miss a minute of this live experience. This online program is through Zoom, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. We’ll provide a how-to guide to make sure you’ll have a hassle-free experience. This session is offered live only and will not be available on demand. We’ll explore how photography activates your brain and how to embrace flow to enhance your life. 2:00 p.m. Break. 2:15 p.m. Lesson: Time to Take the Wheel - How to Seize Control of Your Camera. Photography at its best is creative control. This lesson will give you the fundamental skills you need to use your camera to its fullest potential. 3:45 p.m. Wrap-up and homework assignments. 4:00 p.m. This concludes our program for the day.

In this lesson we’ll discuss the wide range of options and how they impact the look of your photos. 2:00 p.m. Break. 2:15 p.m. Lesson: Subject Matter Matters - How to Compose your Work. No point and shoot here. This lesson is designed to engage your creativity by exploring the art and science of composition. 3:00 p.m. Break. 3:15 p.m. Lesson: Putting It All Together - Assembling Awesome Images. Using a series of remarkable images, we’ll review what we’ve learned so far. 3:45 p.m. Wrap-up and homework assignments. 4:00 p.m. This concludes our program for the day.

We'll go step-by step through three real-world examples of digital workflows that really work. 2:45 p.m. Engagement Activity.
