It’s Bastille Day! Let’s listen to some French music and learn more about the distinctive sound of chanson française. It is the style of popular music born in the cafes and cabarets in the Montmartre district of Paris. Influenced by literary realism, the singers of chanson francaise created the romantic image of Paris that is still felt today by all those who visit. In this lecture, we will hear representative songs by some of the giants of the early to mid-twentieth century, including Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet, Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brel, and others.
