Nestled along the waters of the Atlantic, the archipelago of the Azores is known for its volcanic formations, maritime legacy and warm communities. Experience the best of the Azores during this online learning adventure, live from the islands! With local experts, enjoy virtual field trips to the islands of Sao Miguel, Pico, Faial and Terceira to discover the natural and cultural differences of each island, stopping to learn about volcanoes, hot springs and geothermal activity. Get insight into tea production at an Azorean tea plantation, enjoy an expert-led “walk” at the gardens of Terra Nostra, and enjoy a visit to Peter’s Café, a well-known port of call for sea travelers worldwide. Take in lectures on the history and geography of the Azores, the impact of the world wars on this archipelago, as well as modern efforts to harness geothermal power. Get to know your fellow Road Scholars as you enjoy opportunities for discussion, a musical presentation by a local musician and an opportunity to some local Azorean residents.

  • Discover what it is like to live within a volcanic crater during an online field trip to the town of Furnas on Sao Miguel Island, and admire the beautiful flora during a virtual walk around the botanical gardens of Terra Nostra.
  • Learn how tea is harvested and processed during a virtual field trip to the Gorreana Tea Factory and Plantation, and enjoy a virtual visit to a local pineapple plantation.
  • Get a sense of what life is like on different islands of the Azores as you virtually explore Pico, Faial, Terceira and Sao Miguel.

General Notes

You’ll enjoy 2-3 hours of daily instruction, discussion and/or field trips, which includes sufficient breaks throughout the program. Please review the daily itinerary for start and end times to ensure you won’t miss a minute of this live experience. This online program is through Zoom, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. We’ll provide a how-to guide to make sure you’ll have a hassle-free experience. This session is offered live only and will not be available on demand.

Pedro Cordeiro has a Bachelor’s degree in sales and marketing from the University of the Azores. He also attended a two-year exchange program in Spain under Erasmus sponsorship and has earned a degree in public relations and communication from the University of the Azores. In 2011, after a number of years in the hospitality industry, Pedro became a full-time Group Leader in order to share his love for the outdoors. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and has a good knowledge of French.

Sergio has his bachelor's degree in history and sociology, master's in cultural heritage and museology and a doctorate with a focus on the Azorean and Atlantic history (15th-20th century), all from the University of the Azores. During his time as a military and senior technician at the Azores Military Museum, Sergio was responsible for the museum’s scientific research, production exhibition, museography and educational services.

Nuno Garcia View biography
Mr. Garcia has a bachelor degree in Modern Languages from the University of the Azores, and degree in World Heritage " Vineyards, History and Culture" by UNESCO for the Vineyards Landscape of Pico. He has been active as a multilingual leader since 2006, and is fully qualified for all the nine islands of the Archipelago since 2011. His main areas of interest and continuous study are History, Geology, Volcanology and the Flora of the Azores. He is also a private tutor in Languages and History.

Rita A Martins View biography
Dr. Rita Martins earned a degree in Geology from the University of Lisbon followed by a Master’s in Dynamic Geology. She moved to the Azores in 2003 as a geologist on a short-term contract. Fascinated by the Azores, she extended her stay, working on geothermal projects in the islands of Terceira and Sao Miguel. Since 2017, she has been the Senior Project Manager responsible for the exploration and exploitation of geothermal resources for power production. Dr. Martins has worked with Road Scholar groups since 2019.

Mario Rego View biography
Mario Rego was born in Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island in the Azores. He graduated from the University of Azores, specializing in Azorean Culture, and has been working professionally as a Certified Regional Guide since 1990. Combining his love of history with a passion for nature, he is proud to lead walking excursions and hikes around his hometown — a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site —the island’s nature parks, and areas of geological interest. Mario has worked with Road Scholar groups in the Azores since 2019.

Carina Costa View biography
Carina Costa earned a degree in Agronomy from the University of Azores in 2010. Inspired by her father, Chief Gardener at the Terra Nostra Park, she followed in his footsteps and joined the park team. She interned at the Ventnor Botanic Garden on the Isle of Wight (UK) and later obtained her Master’s degree in Agronomic Engineering. In 2019, she began work on her Ph.D. in Agronomic Sciences to expand knowledge of ornamental flora in the Azores. Carina has led Road Scholars groups since 2017.

Daniel Torres View biography
Daniel Torres has worked with Road Scholar programs in the Azores since 2017. He started his professional career as a site coordinator in Barcelona in 1997 before going on to lead programs in Spain, Portugal, and Brazil. Born and raised in London, he moved to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 24 and worked for 14 years as a singer-songwriter, writing and recording music for Brazilian television and movie projects. Daniel is fluent in English and Portuguese and teaches English as a foreign language.
