Give your regards to Broadway during this immersive online learning adventure, live from New York City! With theater expert Daniel Egan, go behind the scenes to learn about Broadway musicals, meet Broadway actors and discuss the latest in theatrical productions. On a virtual field trip, explore the Times Square Theater District to get a first-hand view of this vibrant neighborhood. Attend lectures and presentations that give you a look into New York theater history, how theater has adapted to live-stream, get insight into writing for musical theater and what it takes to get a Broadway career started. Learn about three different Broadway musicals enjoy an opportunity to view the performances on your own. Along the way, get to know your fellow Road Scholars and theater enthusiasts as you discuss the performances that make Broadway come alive.

  • Explore the Times Square Theater District during a virtual field trip led by a retired Broadway Company Manager.
  • Study recent Broadway musicals with theater experts and watch recordings of the performances on your own time to discuss with your group each day.
  • Meet a Broadway actor and join a discussion about their career and performances.

General Notes

You’ll enjoy 2-3 hours of daily instruction, discussion and/or field trips, which includes sufficient breaks throughout the program. Please review the daily itinerary for start and end times to ensure you won’t miss a minute of this live experience. This online program is through Zoom, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. We’ll provide a how-to guide to make sure you’ll have a hassle-free experience. This session is offered live only and will not be available on demand.

Daniel Egan
Daniel Egan has degrees in music theory from St. Olaf, the Eastman School of Music and Yale, where he is on faculty. He has appeared as soloist or ensemble singer with the New York Philharmonic, Opera Orchestra of New York, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and was in the permanent ensemble at New York City Opera. His recordings include “Sweeney Todd” with the New York Philharmonic and backup vocals for Patti Page’s "Live at Carnegie Hall: The 50th Anniversary Concert.” Both earned Grammy nominations.

Stephen Cole is an internationally produced, published and recorded writer. As librettist and lyricist, Mr. Cole has had his musicals produced Off-Broadway and in London. Besides writing 10 years of Drama League tributes — honoring Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera, among others — Stephen has written for such stars as Tyne Daly and Valerie Harper. Stephen has published three books, including “That Book About That Girl,” the unofficial companion to the Marlo Thomas sitcom from the 1960s.

A New York City resident for more than 25 years, Karl Baudendistel loves sharing his knowledge of the city with visitors from around the world. Having spent 20 years overseeing ‘the business of show business’ for numerous Broadway and touring productions, chances are he’s been to a city near you. Karl is a member of The Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers, is a trained sommelier and was educated at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
