If you have ever thought about attending a few coaching sessions to learn pickleball or improve your pickleball game, this is the course for you. Whether you’re a novice or longtime player, Juliana, Johnny and Randy will help you improve your game. An added benefit is to meet and play with people of the same mindset- learning together was fun! The use of Creekside Tennis club elevated our experience. Don’t expect gourmet food or luxury accommodations, just expect hours of joyful pickleball!

Whether new at Pickle Ball or a seasoned advanced beginner, there is always room for improving and enjoying the sport more. This could very well be the next step in your experience to advance the skills you have that need improvement. The course explains all the sequencies of each play after the initial serve all the way to scoring that great winning point. With the notes that are sent to our homes by the head instructor, we can practice each section again and again. Hopefully, for me, that will be a continuing education that will go on until I need to climb to the next level of advanced player, proud of my abilities.

Pickleball at Montreat is a very well run program and the instructors are highly trained, yet patient and encouraging with newer players. The program is rigorous and I was proud to participate in all sessions, overcome some self-consciousness and return home with an improved game! I shall return!!

I highly recommend RS Pickleball at Montreat. The coaches are top notch. I will be returning for a third time in 2026. My skill level is getting close to 3 and I have improved as a result of this program. And I’m 77, so there’s that as well.

I attended the Pickleball program at Montreat, North Carolina in September 2025. This program was exceptional. The program was incredibly well organized and executed. I learned a tremendous amount about the sport through instruction and demos by the coaches. I was also able to put into practice the concepts taught, both in drills and in free game play. The instructors/coaches were phenomenal. They successfully worked with a wide variety of skill levels in our group and were able to provide valuable feedback throughout the five dads. Juliana and her team were incredibly helpful, with each coach offering a different perspective and instruction style. This program far exceeded my expectations and I hope to attend again in the future.

Montreat is a nice place, but they do not have dedicated outdoor pickleball courts and the tennis courts are not in great shape. Supposedly the courts will be resurfaced, but I don't know if they plan to convert enough of the tennis courts into pickleball courts. If Road Scholar intends to use Montreat for pickleball, Road Scholar should insist that Montreat invest in dedicated pickelball courts. The program was led by instructors who were skilled, but the program was supposed to be for 3.5 and above and it wasn't . When I signed up for the program it was for 3.5 and above, but then Road Scholar changed it. Montreat, on its own website, had it listed as 3.5 and above. Road Scholar needs to decide if it is going to offer targeted pickleball programs, based on experience, or not. If they decide the latter, I would advise experienced pickleball players to avoid these Road Scholar programs. If you expect to take your game to the next level, you will probably won't. The lead instructor had developed a program that was basically for beginners. After the first day, they began to divide us between beginners and those who were not beginners. The instructors with the experienced players gave us drills to do, but there was not much individual, pointed instruction. We didn't really drill long enough on any particular aspect of the game. I would much rather come back having picked up or improved upon one or two aspects of the game, rather than covering a smattering of things but not going deep. Furthermore, the instructors rarely fed us balls. We fed each other balls. Feeding another player a ball that is hittable and helps them work on a particular skill is not easy, but when you are asking the learners to do it while the instructors stand around and watch, you don't get much out of it if your fellow Road Scholar is having trouble feeding you decent balls to hit. I would expect the instructors would be better at feeding the learners hittable balls.

What a great week of pickleball with great instructors and great participants! The food was plentiful with lots of variety and very good and the housing was great! The schedule was perfect to give us lots of instruction, play time and time to recover. The instruction was appropriate for all skill levels and with 4 coaches, there was plenty of time for individual questions/help. I look forward to the resurfacing of the courts. Can't wait to repeat this experience next year!

I recently attended my first Road Scholar program - Pickleball at Montreat. As a solo traveler, I was hesitant at first, but quickly became comfortable with the surroundings. My instructors were wonderful and the atmosphere was extremely welcoming. I didn't have any trouble following the planned activities for the week and made some wonderful friends. I will certainly attend another program next year. Thanks for the memories!

This was the first time I have received pickle ball training. I thought the coaches did a good job and I learned a lot of new techniques and strategies. Now I need a lot of practice. Accommodations and food were good. I enjoyed meeting new people. All-in-all a good experience.

Montreat is a beautiful location to host Pickleball. The instructors were knowledgeable and provided great instruction to our class. They divided us into 3 groups based on experience levels. My expectations were for a more advanced level of instructions based on the description for this class. I believe only a third of the class were at that level. That said, I did learn a few drills and enjoyed our daily practice sessions. The courts are converted tennis courts with tape markings. It takes getting used to the various court markings. Some of the courts we used had huge cracks in them, if the ball hit a crack it would affect the trajectory of the ball. Overall, this course should be marketed more towards 2.5 - 3.5 level, it is not for experienced players.

This location was magical! Leaves were just starting to turn. A Road Scholar yoga group was also there and everyone got to join in on the morning stretch. The pickle ball instructors were laid back and very knowledgeable. The food was very healthy and good and good for us. Enjoyable!

Nancy – Class of 2015 | Oberlin, OH
Montreat was wonderful. It’s a beautiful place, well cared for and managed. The meals were very good, with a variety for vegetarians and omnivores. Pickleball for Beginners quickly evolved to focus more on intermediate techniques, despite a number of true beginners like myself. Little emphasis on beginner skills, footwork or safety. Often felt chaotic to me. On the 3rd day I fell during practice and fractured my pelvis. Luckily there were some local residents playing nearby who came to my aid, otherwise my partner and I were on our own in an unfamiliar place. No plan in place by instructors to deal with the situation. Painful lesson. Disappointed.

Reply from Road Scholar
Dear Nancy, We are sorry to hear of your injury and hope that you are doing better. The individuals that assisted you were part of the Montreat community. We have communicated with the instructors and have a plan in place to start out with a review of basic safety guidelines and will adjust the program materials to let participants know it would be helpful to attend after having some experience playing pickleball. The facility is also exploring the possibility of having a health professional on duty during pickleball play. Sincerely, Road Scholar

As a complete novice, I had no idea what to expect, but both the coaches and the other participants were amazingly patient and supportive. I had a great time, and I purchased equipment and signed up for pickleball clinics as soon as I got back. Very glad I took a chance on a new experience.

If you are getting started playing pickleball, this program is meant for you. A great introduction into the mechanics of the game, score-keeping, player positioning. My head was jammed with information by the end of the week and I was watching pickleball videos in my spare time. I can't wait to play at home!
