There is even a shrine to Alexander the Great, considered pharaoh after his conquest of Egypt in 331 B.C.E.

Breakfast: Aboard the motorcoach en route to the pyramids, we’ll have boxed breakfasts.

Morning: Led by our local expert, we’ll transfer via motorcoach to explore the most renowned sites of Egypt: the Great Pyramids of Giza. The iconic architectural marvels that define the Valley of Giza, each of the pyramids is a monumental tomb that was created to memorialize a different Egyptian pharaoh. The largest of the pyramids is the oldest and dedicated to the Fourth Dynasty ruler known as Khufu, or Cheops to the Greeks. The other two main Pyramids of Giza are dedicated to Khafre, and Menkaura. During the New Kingdom under the kings of the 18th Dynasty, the area regained its traditional air of veneration for the ancestor pharaohs, and the iconic Great Sphinx – Lord of Setpet, the Chosen Place – was established as the mainstay for the religious devotion of the royal class. We will take some time at its feet and learn about where kings and princesses of the 18th and 19th Dynasties left their mark.

Lunch: At a local hotel near the Pyramids.

Afternoon: Continuing, we will make our way to the Grand Egyptian Museum with our local expert to discover some of the highlights of Egypt’s ancient history. Activity note: Hotel check-out.

Breakfast: At the hotel depending on departure times.

Morning: We will board a motorcoach and transfer to the Athens airport. This completes our program. If you are returning home, safe travels. If you are staying on independently, have a wonderful time. If you are transferring to another Road Scholar program, detailed instructions are included in your Information Packet for that program. We hope you enjoy Road Scholar learning adventures and look forward to having you on rewarding programs in the future. Don’t forget to join our Facebook page and follow us on Instagram. Best wishes for all your journeys!
