After checking out of the hotel, we’ll set out via motorcoach and venture downtown as a group to visit local sites in Louisville, including an expert-led field trip at Churchill Downs Racetrack and Museum. While here, we will mix and mingle with a retired winning jockey as they share stories and answer the "behind-the-scenes" questions. On site, we’ll get an up-close-and-personal view of the horses, jockeys, trainers, and other connections who live the sport of horseracing! Next, we will visit the Kentucky Derby Museum where the excitement will continue during a thrilling immersive sound and visual experience. Then, we’ll have self-led walk through the museum as we delve into every stage of a thoroughbred horse’s life, and learn about the history of the race dating back to the inaugural running in 1875 up through to the most recent Kentucky Derby champion. On an expert-led walk of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack from the paddock and out to the grandstand, we’ll learn about past Derby winners and the rich history of this location.
At a local restaurant, we’ll have plated meals with coffee, tea, water included; other beverages available for purchase.
We will then transfer via motorcoach to the American Duchess. After settling into our rooms, we will gather for a ship safety orientation. This is a Road Scholar Adventures Afloat program. In addition to Road Scholar exclusive lectures, field trips, and activities, we will have the opportunity to take advantage of activities and events offered by the cruise line that are separate from Road Scholar. Please note that routes, field trips, and excursions are subject to change as weather and river conditions could require altering the itinerary and/or the progress of the vessel, making it run late and possibly miss ports if it cannot dock. The operators reserve the right to change the itinerary and the content of field trips and excursions if/as needed due to local circumstances. The time available in each port is set by the cruise line in conjunction with the local maritime authorities, and may change on short-notice.
In the dining room aboard the boat, Road Scholar has reserved tables for our group. Our dinners will have a starter, choice of soup or salad, entrée, and dessert with choices for each course; beer, wine, soft drinks, coffee, tea, water included.
At leisure. One of the highlights of the shipboard experience is the opportunity to enjoy entertainment in the Show Lounge as performers put on a Broadway-style performance each evening. Alternatively, take time to relax or socialize with other passengers.
