This was a demanding but worthwhile trip. There were a lot of moves and a lot of walking/stairs which were made tougher due to a heatwave. There were many hands-on activities. Sometimes these activities are just "fillers", but these were all fun and educational for the students. Robyn represented the best of RS leaders - firm enough to keep everyone organized but flexible and fun. She was quite willing to help with individual needs; it was amazing how many requests she remembered. And she was, of course, very knowledgeable. Kyoku was charming and shared her expertise. She personalized her talks with family pictures and anecdotes that added a lot. I dropped my wallet and she found it at the police station and stayed behind to retrieve it. This is my third grandparents' trip and it was the best. I would recommend it to anyone.
My only criticism is that our initial meeting was quite brief. Other grandparent trips have included a longer introduction period, some basic language phrases which the students practiced saying, and some tips re local manners and customs.

First of all, I think you should ask specific questions about the trip and then allow me to expand on my comments. Overall, I felt the trip was very good and seemed to be oriented towards the grandchildren with excellent hands-on experiences. I thought the weakest part of the the trip was the first two guides who offered little information and did not seem to be tuned into the group or offer any other than basic information. The last guide was very personable and offered much in the way of additional information. The group coordinator was very hands-on and helpful and excellent at being supportive and uniting the group. I would have liked to have had the opportunity to attend some talks more directed at the adults on such topics as history and religion.
The "resort"experience did not meet the quality of the other aspects of the trip as there was little to do there with the pool being closed. The breakfasts there were quite limited. Perhaps a hike or other activity could have been planned. However going to the countryside and seeing how people live in a small village and not just cities was a good part of the trip.
It was excellent that an age group was designated as that allowed for more interaction between the grandchildren. Also the number and length of activities seemed appropriate and kept all the children involved. The overall length of the trip and the amount of travel including subway, bus and high speed train was at a good level.
I would recommend this trip to my friends.

A great program to learn about Japanese culture both ancient and modern. Lots of hands-on activities for grandparents and grandchildren to enjoy. Just beware of the heat and humidity if you go in July!

The Road Scholar Intergenerational Programs are the perfect opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to enjoy one another and to learn. I highly recommend them. This was my 7th Road Scholar trip with a grandchild and each has been a wonderful experience.
