Robyn Laing was a very compassionate and competent trip leader, and we thoroughly enjoyed the cultural/historical experts in each of the cities and prefectures in which we traveled. Chiyuki was particulary witty, showing us around Himeji Castle; Tadashi in Hiroshima was so distinguished and thoughtful; Nabby in Tokyo was very welcoming and friendly. The hotels were all very well appointed and centrally located to our activities and to public transportation, and we especially appreciated the ryokan in Mie Prefecture, which had very gracious hosts and a delightful onsen. Though we are well traveled, we had never traveled with a tour group before, but it was a great experience in a country where we did not speak more than a few phrases and needed to learn polite manners and culture. We loved the shrines and temples, but our favorite days were populated with visits to the family who owned the bonito-smoking hut, the pearl farmers, and the ama divers--very special! We also loved the ikebana class and rickshaw ride. The food was fantastic in every place we went. Overall, an amazing trip!

We always travel on our own and do all our own planning, but we're so glad we used Road Scholar for this journey to Japan. Not having to manage the accommodations, travel and tours, complete with lots of time to explore on your own allowed us to focus on the experience rather than the itinerary. The local guides were deeply informative and entertaining and provided insights to the places we visited that we wouldn't have otherwise had. What a special itinerary.

A fantastic experience! Great locations, accommodations and guides. I have travelled fairly extensively and had never taken a guided tour before. I'm converted! Road Scholar really enhanced the travel experience by adding cultural explorations I would never have found on my own. Transportation was well planned and on time. There was a good balance of planned activities and free time. The expert local guides and group leader had great suggestions for free time activities and were always available to ensure each traveler was accommodated according to their dietary needs and mobility levels. Highly recommeded!

Best of Japan was incredible! We didn't want to leave. There were many unique and memorable experiences such as Ikebana, a pearl farm and meeting Ama divers among others. Japan's gardens and people are beautiful. Highly recommend this program.

A great trip with an excellent leader and local guides, as well as a fun group of fellow travelers. We learned and experienced much more than we would have visiting on our own.

The Best of Japan: A Contrast in Tradition and Innovation, #23294RJ, is an excellent overview of Japan. Our tour director, Satomi Fukuda, was an outstanding leader. We learned so much about Japan's culture while visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka. The many authentic experiences included a rickshaw ride, ikebana, the tea ceremony, staying in a ryokan, bathing in the onsen(optional), many shrines, temples, a castle and delicious meals. This program made me want to learn more about Japan, possibly, return!

What a great trip! Robyn Laing was knowledgable, professional, generous, and fun. Thank you for her guidance. I would have preferred one less day in Tokyo. It was quite overwhelming to have busy Tokyo on arrival while being jet lagged. And I would have appreciated one more day in Kyoto or Osaka. The Shiba hotel in Tokyo was very nice, off on a quiet street and easy walking to the trains. The hotel in Kyoto was too much for me, busy, hi tech...I had expected a smaller, quiet place like the Shiba. The rooms were quite comfortable, it was just the overwheling size of the place. I loved the resort and our guide there was fantastic with a great sense of humor. It was so nice to be away from the hussle-bussle of big cities. I wish we had bullet trains in the U.S. as I would always travel by train! Over all, a fantastic trip with excellent guides and all the participants were great..I have some new friends. One big thing though - a number of us had hearing aids and we all had issues with the "whisperers" which were a great help hearing the guides. I had hoped there was blue tooth...a number of us took our left hearing aid out, some tried to put the earpiece over our left side hearing aid. Very unfortunately, I lost my left hearing aid. I can't say enough about Robyn, the guides, the participants and Road Scholar. I look forward to more trips with you. Thank you. Terry

Our Japan tour was an ideal blend of scheduled activities, conversations with Japanese people about their lives, and free time to explore our own interests while in Japan. Our tour leader, John Hundleby, was fantastic, and made sure everyone enjoyed each day of the tour.

Thank you, Road Scholar, for the opportunity of a lifetime. My trip to Japan was my first venture to Asia. I recommend a trip to this Country for everyone and hope to partake in another Road Scholar tour in the not-so-distant future.

What a fabulous trip! The sights, the gracious Japanese people, and the delicious food made this trip extremely enjoyable. But what really enhanced the experience was being there during the cherry blossom blooming. If you are free to choose the time of your trip, I would definitely go during late March-early April. But regardless of when you go, you will enjoy it. The physical requirements are just as described; so the more in-shape you are, the better you will enjoy it. We had John as our tour guide and he was great! He spoke the language, was very organized, and tried to accommodate everyone's individual wishes.

Japan: Tradition and Innovation exceeded all my expectations. A wonderful tour leader and 13 other travelers who were brimming with excitement and brought their knowledge and interests to the group. We covered so much geographic and informational territory in such a short time but never felt crammed or rushed. I will be back for another Road Scholar adventure soon!
