1
Check-in, Registration, Orientation, Welcome Dinner

Activity note: Lodge check-in from 3:30 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration. 4:30 p.m. After you have your room assignment, come to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any changes, other important information, and to confirm when and where the Orientation session will take place. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. For the entire week, please wear sturdy riding shoes, pants, and a hat if you choose. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: After a long day of travel, we will enjoy a hot buffet, which includes a hot and cold line with both healthy and savory choices. Coffee, tea, water included.

Evening: We will explore the campus of Trout Lodge and Camp Lakewood, while learning a little about the history of the YMCA and how it got the name Trout Lodge.

Dutch Oven Breakfast, Equine Basics, Meet the Herd

Activity note: Please wear sturdy riding shoes, pants, and a hat if you choose.

Breakfast: At the lodge, we will enjoy a cowboy-style Dutch oven breakfast, including choices such as egg casserole, biscuits, hot coffee, hot chocolate, juice, tea, and water.

Morning: We will learn the basics of animal science and equine behavior from our instructor. We’ll also learn horse colors, markings, breeds, and more, before meeting the herd at Triangle Y Ranch, to receive our horse assignments for the week.

Lunch: At the lodge, our buffet meal will include a hot line and salad bar, plus assorted desserts; coffee, tea, water included.

Afternoon: We’ll learn about grooming, saddling and ground work with our horses. Possible activities can include a catching lesson, leading, longing, an arena lesson, Western-style riding basics, and more. Afterwards, we’ll take a hayride through a pasture where the horses are turned after a day's work. We'll watch as they travel right past the wagon out to pasture for the evening.

Dinner: Lodge buffet.

Evening: We’ll enjoy the autumn evening by the campfire, reflecting on some cowboy poetry and wisdom.

Western-Style Riding, Trail Riding

Breakfast: At the lodge, our breakfast buffet will include a hot line and salad bar, plus assorted desserts; coffee, tea, water included.

Morning: We’ll groom and saddle our horses before enjoying a trail ride or an arena lesson based on personal preference, in groups.

Lunch: Lodge buffet.

Afternoon: After a morning of trail riding or catching up with arena lessons, we’ll be able to regroup and enjoy a valley trail ride through forested trails. We’ll then unsaddle and turn out the horses for the evening.

Dinner: Lodge buffet.

Evening: A campfire with s'mores is mandatory for visitors to Trout Lodge! We may also enjoy some more cowboy wisdom as well.

Advanced Skills, Trail Riding, Farrier Demo, Barn Dance

Activity note: Riding 2 miles on the trail today.

Breakfast: Lodge buffet.

Morning: We’ll groom and saddle our horses before learning more advanced Western-style riding skills.

Lunch: Lodge buffet.

Afternoon: We will enjoy a two-mile ride up the mountain, enjoying stunning views. After returning to the lodge, we’ll unsaddle our horses and turn them out for the evening.

Dinner: Lodge buffet.

Evening: We’ll enjoy a farrier demonstration at the barn as one of the horses receives shoes. Afterwards, let’s kick up some dust with some line dances and local musicians at the barn dance!

Lessons, Trail Riding, Gaiting Demonstration

Activity note: Riding 4 miles on the trail today.

Breakfast: Lodge buffet.

Morning: After grooming and saddling, we’ll embark on a 4-mile trail ride with a packed lunch to enjoy on the trail.

Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch with your new friends near the scenic dolomite cliffs overlooking Sunnen Lake. Your horse will also get a picnic snack!

Afternoon: After a long time out on the trail, we’ll learn about the Missouri Fox Trotter, our state horse, and see a gaited horse demonstration. Before dinner, we’ll enjoy one last herd view hayride to see our new friends out to pasture after the week together.

Dinner: By campfire, we will enjoy a Dutch oven-cooked dinner that includes an amazing dessert called dump cake! Coffee, tea, water included.

Evening: At leisure.

6
The Herd Comes In, Program Concludes

Activity note: Lodge check-out by 11:30 a.m.

Breakfast: Lodge buffet.

Morning: We’ll enjoy visiting with the herd for one last morning, take pictures with our horses, then taking part in closing ceremonies.

Lunch: Lodge buffet. This concludes our program.

Afternoon: If you are transferring to another Road Scholar program, detailed instructions are included in your Information Packet for that program.
