I came home with great memories, new friends, and a real appreciation for our early American history. I was humbled by our early forefathers and everything we learned about their lives. I’m so thankful I was able to be part of this trip and already can’t wait for my next Road Scholar adventure.

This program was an excellent representation of our country's early history, centering around the Revolutionary War. All lectures and on-site tours were well coordinated, providing a good experience for all participants. The hotel was conveniently located close to Colonial Williamsburg. Our Group Leader, Christi, did an excellent job of paying attention to all phases of the schedule.

I love U.S. history, and this trip was perfect! History comes alive in Colonial Williamsburg; it's like stepping back in time. Our hotel was excellent with large comfortable rooms and in a great central location. Leigh was a wonderful guide! And the costumed interpreters were such interesting speakers who enriched our experience. Leigh put together a photo album of the trip and emailed it to everyone at the end of the trip......great memories! I would recommend this trip for anyone who enjoys learning what life was like in colonial times.

Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown are places every American should visit -- and spend at least three or four days. It's like going back in time, and you get to talk to the Founding Fathers and their friends in person. This Road Scholar program is a perfect way to learn about the fascinating early history of our country and have a lot of fun at the same time.

A very nice group and leader in one of the best hotels in Colonial Williamsburg, to learn more about the first Virginia settlement, plantation, up to civil war, all the speakers were great. I will have like spend more time in Yorktown.

Historic Triangle Sampler was a nice blend of history, architecture, interpreters, gardens, etc. Leader Leigh Jameson of Virginia has a long interaction with Colonial Williamsburg and was helpful and proactive. Road Scholar's program speakers were excellent and were passionate about their work. The Williamsburg Lodge is a few steps from the main Colonial Williamsburg area and that makes for lots to do and ease of access. We received a pass to Colonial Williamsburg that was good for 6 days and I got to use it early since I arrived a day early. Maps tell you what is going on and the times of Colonial Williamsburg speakers, etc. Good restaurants abound. William and Mary College is very close by. I went to 2 concerts at nearby historic Bruton Church. I drove a rental car from Richmond but parked it (at no cost) at the Williamsburg Lodge. Never needed my rental car, but the cost was probably less than Ubering and the Richmond airport is only about 45 minutes away on the Interstate.

I didn’t know what to expect on my 1st Road Scholar trip. But I soon found out it is expertly organized by a company with decades of experience in group travel and learning. We had in-person, Hands-on experiences that can only be accomplished by traveling to the area itself. These experiences can never be replicated in a textbook. There’s just something about “being there” that makes the learning so impactful and memorable. Just a Heads up: These are group experiences, outings, meals and field trips. So if you like exploring on your own this is not for you. However if you like hanging with a group and a leader, you will likely see more things, cover more ground in an organized way, and see & learn things that you likely would not have access to on your own.

Road Scholar gave us an in-depth experience and insight into the working of Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg. Touring alone never would have given us the personal attention the Road Scholar program gave us!

We really enjoyed this program. The group leader, Teri Toepke, was very organized, efficient and knowledgable. We learned so much about colonial life and history that we never knew before. The trip to Jamestowne was especially eye opening, The guide there, Mark Summers, was excellent and was especially good at presenting all the different perspectives of historic events. The musical presentations during the week from both Stephen Christoff (antique instruments) and Dean Shostak (glass armonica) were excellent!

I expected to learn about the Colonial period of history on this trip, but I also learned a good deal about the Civil War era in the area. A back-to-back Road Scholar program on the Civil War might be a good idea to offer in conjunction with Colonial Williamsburg.

Bonnie – Class of 2012 | Kevil, KY
This was a wonderful experience! Our group leader , Bunny, was terrific. The other speakers we heard--history of Williamsburg, Jamestown archeology, Berkely Plantation were all excellent. One more young woman, who portrayed a servant who had survived the "starving time" was fun and interesting to listen to. Accommodations were very nice and all meals were delicious. Extra information regarding free time and restaurants was very helpful. Thanks to Road Scholar! Bonnie Koblitz

A great overview of three historic sites. The hotel is top notch and a few blocks from Colonial Williamsburg. Enjoyed the Jamestown archaeology discussion and free time. The Yorktown battlefield walk provides the third part of the historic tour. Lots of free time for walking or relaxing at the hotel and spa. My first Road Scholar tour in two years. Selected this tour because it was within a four hour drive. Enjoyed being able to travel, meet new people, and had great weather.

This would be a wonderful program under any circumstances, but after being cooped up during COVID restrictions, we picked Williamsburg because it was in easy driving distance. Luckily for us, the second week in November surprised us with glorious weather and a spectacular fall foliage display that really heightened our enjoyment. It made the visits to Jamestown and Yorktown a sheer delight. All speakers and musicians were superb, including historians and local tour guides, whose gentle Virginia accents added a charming touch. No matter how well you think you know American history, there is always more to discover. The last presentation, a demonstration of the glass harmonium (invented by Benjamin Franklin) ended the trip on a very high note (you will get to see it in a Ken Burns special airing next April). Our group of 19 was most congenial, and our leader, Christi, was perfect in every way. A great getaway.

Teresa – Class of 2016 | Delafield, WI
This is a trip that every American should take. We learned the story of the birth of our nation in a way that history books just can't provide. We truly enjoyed exploring Williamsburg in our free time. We saw Jamestown come to life through an expertly led tour, and relived in our imagination the Siege of Yorktown through sites still in place today. If you went to Williamsburg as a little kid, try it again through Road Scholar. You won't be disappointed.
