Afternoon:
Orientation: we will gather for Orientation. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. The Road Scholar educational program consists of lectures and presentations exclusively for our group as well as educational field trips. These Road Scholar expert-led field trips, included in the cost of the program, will typically be for the members of our group aboard our own designated vehicles (depending on group size). In the event of any significant changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

We will board a coach for a field trip to St. Paul’s Cathedral, an unmissable silhouette on the London skyline and often considered to be Christopher Wren’s architectural masterpiece. It has been standing in its current form since 1711 and its tranquil interior is majestic in its Baroque splendor. A local expert will take us through its turbulent and fascinating history as we explore its magnificent three-domed structure.

Afternoon:
Next, we will ride to Westminster Abbey. Raised from the foundations of several previous churches on this site, the Abbey as we see it today was first begun in 1245 by Henry III and was granted cathedral status by Henry VIII in 1540. It is perhaps best known worldwide as the site of coronations, numerous royal weddings, and the funeral of Princess Diana.

We will depart the hotel at approximately 1:00 p.m. and board our coach for the two-hour ride to Southampton, where we will embark Queen Anne. Upon arrival, we will complete embarkation procedures. This is a Road Scholar Adventures Afloat program. Port stops are subject to change as weather and ocean conditions could affect the progress of the vessel. The cruise itinerary should therefore be regarded as provisional. The time in each port is set by the cruise line. The cruise line reserves the right change the itinerary without prior notice. We will have some time to unpack and begin to familiarize ourselves with the ship. We will participate with everyone on board in the ship’s muster drill when announced and proceed to our assigned muster stations.

The Road Scholar educational program consists of lectures and presentations exclusively for our group as well as designated field trips selected by Road Scholar from among the ship’s shore excursions. Road Scholar field trips will typically be for the members of our group aboard our own vehicles. There will also be occasions when Road Scholars will join other Queen Anne passengers for shore excursions. The ship is scheduled to leave Southampton at 6:00 p.m. on our journey to Funchal, Portugal.

Departing Funchal’s bustling port by coach, today we make for Madeira’s magnificent rolling hills to discover Quinta Pedagogica da Camacha, a small farm committed to sustainable agriculture. A local expert will offer insights into the region and introduce you to the farm’s owner, Bruno Santos.Having left a career in accounting for agriculture, Bruno now dedicates his life to helping his neighborhood through sustainable farming, lowering his environmental footprint, and undertaking community outreach programs. As we explore the grounds, learn about the many uses for their freshly grown herbs and visit their strawberry plantation. Observe the fields and poios—what Madeirans call the terraced areas where they grow their crops—as we learn about the farm’s produce and animal husbandry. We’ll also experience a host of seasonal activities such as harvesting ripe fruits or sowing seeds in a planting workshop.

This morning we'll depart the port city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and head to the nearby town of La Laguna - a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its unique Canarian architecture, which would later be imitated by many countries in the "New World". On arrival we will enjoy a walking exploration of the town with a local expert, followed by some free time. From La Laguna, we will rejoin our coach and head to Bodegas Monje. We will discover this winery which has been making wine since 1750. We will also dive into a mojo workshop, mojo being a traditional and versatile sauce made with ingredients like garlic, olive oil, and spices.

After working up an appetite, we will sit for lunch in the charming setting of Cellar el Monje before returning to Sata Cruz de Tenerife.

Our cultural discovery of Mindelo today will begin with an examination of the life and music of one of Mindelo's most beloved daughters, the great popular singer Cesaria Evora, more commonly known as the Queen of Morna to locals. Setting out in our coach we will make our way to the Caesaria Evora Museum to learn more of the "Barefoot Diva". En route through the vibrant city, we'll pass artworks created by the portuguese artist Vhils in Caesaria's honor and which help her memory endure today. Following our visit to the museum, we'll enjoy a relaxed coffee break with live musical accompaniment to really immerse us in the music culture of Cape Verde. After coffee and refreshments, we'll make our way to the Handicraft museum to learn more about the production of handcrafts in Mindelo. Here, explore the ever changing exhibition of locally made products before re joining our coach for the drive back to the port.

We will board one of the ship's tenders and head to port, upon arrival in port we will board our motorcoach and head to Mondesa, a Black Township in Swakopmund. Established in the early 1950’s to provide housing for the Black community working in Swakopmund, we will learn about the culture and historic background of the township. Walk through the streets of Mondesa, interact with children and locals in the streets. Visit the open markets where local produce is sold, the arts and craft stalls, the DRC informal settlement and experience the stark contrast between rich and poor.

Depart Cape Town harbor on foot and take a leisurely stroll with a local expert and Mr. Christo Brand (former prison guard to the late Nelson Mandela) to the V&A Waterfront and the Red Clock Tower. Arrive Robben Island Clock Tower and check-in for our Ferry with Mr. Christo Brand. NOTE: . Please be aware that the ferry to Robben Island is weather dependent and takes approximately 45 minutes. Upon arrival at Robben Island we will be met by a local expert who will provide insight into the history of the island. We will return to the V&A Waterfront by ferry and enjoy a short walk to a local restaurant for lunch.

Following lunch, we will join our coach for a panoramic drive through Cape Town, passing sites relating to the late Nelson Mandela. We will return to the ship in the late afternoon.

We will be met by our local Cape Town expert and board our coach for the drive to Table Mountain. At Table Mountain, we will ascend the steep granite slopes by cable car (weather permitting), allowing us splendid views of the city and peninsula; it is perhaps one of the most magnificent views in the southern hemisphere. After descending in the cable car, we will travel to Signal Hill for a birds eye view of the 'Mother City'. Departing Signal Hill we will pass through Kloofnek, Camps Bay and Sea Point before returning to the ship for lunch onboard.

We’ll be met early this morning at Port Elizabeth harbor by our local expert for a drive through the city en-route to Addo Elephant National Park. Commonly referred to as “The Windy City,” Port Elizabeth was founded in 1820 and is the most populous city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. We’ll continue to the Addo Elephant National Park, where we will trade the motorcoach for open-air 4x4 vehicles and embark on a morning safari drive. Each safari vehicle will have its own safari specialist who provides commentary on the animals seen during the drive. Addo Elephant National Park is the third largest national park in South Africa, and where we may spot elephants, lions, spotted hyenas, antelope, warthog or zebra among the numerous bird, reptile, and amphibious species. Our game drive will last for approximately 2 hours, after which we will have the midday at leisure in the park.

After lunch, we will re board our coach and head back to Port Elizabeth to rejoin our ship and continue our journey.

Morning:
Durban is home to the largest Indian community in South Africa, many descend from indentured laborers and free migrants who arrived from British India during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today we will learn about the history, and the important role many Indian migrants played in the anti-apartheid struggle. After meeting our local expert, we will stop at a local spice emporium where we have the chance to sample spiced pineapple and perhaps pick up some local spices to take home. We will then visit the 1860 Heritage Centre, a unique museum dedicated to the pioneers who journeyed from India to South Africa between 1860 and 1911.From here, we will continue to the Chatsworth Youth Centre. The center’s manager will offer an insight into the role the center plays in the community and the history of the center’s founding by Nelson Mandela in 2003. Our final stop for the day will be the Hare Krishna Temple where we will enjoy a short visit.

This Field Trip is not suitable for guests who suffer from high altitude. Guests are recommended to carry a light jacket as temperatures can drop due to the altitude.

Morning:
Today, we have the chance to get up close to Reunion’s volcanic origins. Meeting our local expert, we will take a scenic drive to St Pierre, before heading towards the island’s heights on the volcano road. As we pass, marvel at how these extraordinary landscapes change, with verdant green vegitation evolving into a stark moonscape. Upon arrival at the volcano, we will walk over mostly paved surfaces to Nez de Boeuf, we will enjoy a view into the deep volcano ravine before continuing on to Pas de Bellecombe at 7,000 feet to gaze in wonder at Piton de la Fournaise. NOTE: The visibility at the volcano locations is dependent on the weather conditions.The mountain drive takes in a number of hairpin bends, which may affect those who suffer from vertigo.This Field Trip is not suitable for participants who suffer from high altitude.

Visit the interactive museum La Cité du Volcan to learn more about this natural phenomenon. After this exciting discovery, we'll rejoin our coach for the return journey to the ship.

We will board our motorcoach and head out to explore Pamplemousses. In 1735 the French Govenor Francois Mahe de Labourdonna broke ground in the district of Pamplemousses near Port Louis to create a garden for his family. The garden he began now houses more than 650 varieties of plant including the famous giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, which form the centrepiece of the gardens splendid pond, and 80 different varieties of palm trees. It also houses the funeral shrine of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, ‘the father of the nation’ and the island’s first prime minister. Next visit the central market.

We will drive to Moka, visit the 19th century Eureka Colonial House, one of the oldest colonial houses on the island. Explore the house with a local expert, see its authentic antique furniture, which provides an interesting glimpse into colonial life. Enjoy refreshments on the terrace and view the peaceful garden before proceeding up the hill the open church of Marie Reine de la Paix, where Pope John Paul II officiated his first mass on the island in 1989.

Morning:
Today, we will begin our discovery by immersing ourselves in the religious and cultural experiences Colombo has to offer, visiting the historic Kelaniya Temple. An active Buddhist temple in modern Colombo, Kelaniya Temple is believed to have been built on a site visited by the Buddha himself over 2,000 years ago. Take in the excellent carvings, fine frescoes, and images of Lord Buddha before making offerings of lotus flowers, lighting lamps & incense sticks and receive a special blessing from the temple priest.

We'll continue our discovery of Colombo with a visit to Colombo National Museum, full of prized artifacts that help us understand the influences that shaped modern Sri Lanka. Leaving the museum, we'll enjoy a panoramic coach exploration of the ever-changing skyline of Colombo as we drive through the city. We'll leave our coach for a walk through the Pettah Bazaar and a photo stop at Independence Square before continuing our drive through the Galle Face Greens as we make our way back to the pier.

Our morning journey begins with a visit to Singapore’s UNESCO Heritage site – The Botanical Gardens where we will see where the first rubber tree was planted that started the Rubber Boom in the late 19th century. We will also discover the National Orchid Garden Enclosure and then head towards the civic district with a visit to Merlion Park. From here we will walk towards the Old Singapore Parliament House which is known today as the Art House for a visit. We will pass by Victoria Memorial Hall and Theatre and Raffles Landing site along the Singapore river. Our final stop will be the Singapore History Museum to discover one of the best kept secrets, a bronze bell donated to Singapore by the daughter of famous American Patriot Paul Revere, Marie Revere who lived and died in Singapore.

This morning we will ride the historic Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong’s Central District. Even after 100 years, this ferry remains an important commuter link from Kowloon to Hong Kong island. The eight-minute crossing provides spectacular 360 degree views of Hong Kong’s magnificent harbor. We will then drive to the base of Victoria Peak and take the funicular up the highest mountain on the island where spectacular views stretch across gleaming skyscrapers to the blue harbor beyond.

We will also have time to explore the surrounding Nan Lian Garden with it's beautiful lotus ponds. This morning, we will board our coach to explore Darwin. We will visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and learn how aircraft and technology are used to deliver medical services in the huge distances of centraland northern Australia. Founded in 1928, the RFDS is now one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world, providing primary health care and 24-hour emergency service to people over an area of nearly 3 million square miles. While in the city, we will also visit the Defence of Darwin exhibition. Here we learn about the bombing of Darwin during World War II. We will gain an understanding of the impact of the war on Darwin and its inhabitants, both civilian and military.

We will make our way to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, or MAGNT for short. Situated on Larrakia Country, MAGNT Darwin is home to internationally renowned artistic, cultural and scientific collections and research programs which we will explore with our local expert. Upon arrival in port, we will meet at the base of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, led by our local expert, we will have a walking exploration of The Rocks area giving us insights into Sydney’s colonial past. The Rocks was the area of Sydney first settled by the British and it has a fascinating history and wonderful sandstone buildings. We will then continue to the Botanical Gardens. Walking in the footsteps of yesteryears, today's experience will provide the history and stories that made Sydney Cove what it is today. Taking in the Aboriginal perspective through art and storytelling through the Art Gallery and the Botanical Gardens merged with the culture and traditions bought in by the British makes for a very interesting and educational insight into “Sydney” all while taking in the amazing beauty of this harbor city. After our morning discovery of Sydney Harbor, return to the ship for lunch onboard or continue your explorations independently.

As we arrive in Port Vila, marvel in delight at the sight of the town’s colourful harbour. Beyond this you’ll find glistening lagoons and offshore islands, and idyllic views at every turn. We will board our coach and head to Ekasup Village. For thousands of years, the port of Port Vila has been occupied by Melanesian people, the indigenous population, and settlers of British, French, Chinese, and Vietnamese descent. This has earned Vanuatu the status of one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Located in the woods of Erakor, we will learn about the traditional way of life in Ekasup Village. Be treated to a closer look at how the Melanesian people have lived for over 3,000 years, and learn about farming, home economics, and architecture.

Travelers flying or cruising across the Pacific Ocean get to experience the only-one-place-in-the-world feeling of adding or losing a day within the span of a second. The International Date Line is the longitudinal boundary between where one day starts (to the west) and another day ends (to the east). It runs roughly along the 180th meridian of longitude in the middle of the ocean—with some exceptions in the southern Pacific, where sovereign islands opted for one side over the other for commercial reasons. The Date Line was initially proposed by astronomers from 25 countries at a conference in 1884, but took until the early 1900s to become standardized globally. After a few adjustments, the position of the Date Line was formalized in 1921.

This morning we will board our coach and visit Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. At the Arizona Memorial Visitor Center, we will view a 23-minute film depicting the events of the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack and the aftermath. Then, we will board a Navy launch for a harbor exploration of Battleship Row -- the area where eight US battleships were moored during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The boat will circle the USS Arizona Memorial allowing for views and photo opportunities. More than 1,000 servicemen still lie entombed in the sunken USS Arizona.

Today we will explore some of the 130 acres of magnificent gardens of San Marino Ranch and learn how Henry and Arabella Huntington’s land has been transformed into the world-famous cultural landmark we know today. With a local expert, we will delve into many of the amazing elements of The Huntington, including 16 themed gardens, three art galleries, the Library, and current special exhibitions.

We will board our coach and head to the J. Paul Getty Museum which is accessed by a ¾ mile hover train ride from the parking structure. The museum houses European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs. Wealthy American industrialist, Jean Paul Getty, was an avid collector of art and antiquities who established the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Getty Center is one of the most visited art museums in the United States, exhibiting Getty's collection of Western art, from the Middle Ages to the present, against a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views. This stunning collection features works by Titian, Rembrandt, Manet, and Monet.

We will board our coach and drive approximately 1 1/2 hours through Guatemala's lowlands, where we'll be treated to views of volcanoes, sugar cane plantations, and fields of grazing cattle. Today we will discover the colonial jewel of the Americas, Antigua. A local expert will lead us on a walking exploration of historic Antigua--a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our walk will include a visit to the Jade Museum that has been featured in National Geographic Magazine and a TV special on the Discovery Channel. From the museum’s website: “Jadeite Jade was discovered approximately 3,000 years ago by an early Mesoamerican culture, The Olmecs. They became expert lapidary artists and carved jade into beautiful statues, ceremonial ornaments and objects for their rituals. Their descendants, The Maya, used it as ornaments and jewelry for nobles and priests. Only the very wealthy and powerful could afford to wear jade both in this life and in the afterlife.”

Panama Canal Transit- Cruising Only

Today we will be transiting the Panama Canal. The construction of the Panama Canal is one of those epic tales from the past, an old-school feat of engineering, ambition and courage. A cruise along it today is a journey through the centuries, from the Spanish fortifications near Limón Bay to the glittering skyline of Panama City, not to mention the canal itself. In 2016 an expansion more than doubled the canal's capacity, ensuring it will continue to be central to the world's maritime traffic. We will gather with our lecturer for a Road Scholar exclusive lecture.

This morning we will enjoy an intriguing journey through Willemstad's cultural UNESCO Sites and hear stories about the unique icons and buildings from our local expert along the way. Making our way to the far west of the island, we'll make a photo stop at the salt lake and observe wonderful pink flamingos in their natural habitat. Next, take a brief, easy stroll in Shete Boca National Park and see waves crashing into the semi blowhole before enjoying some free time at Knip Beach. A beautiful blue lagoon in a natural cove, where you can swim, lounge or explore at your leisure. If you plan on taking a dip, be sure to bring your swimwear and a towel and of course, sunblock. Local sunbeds are available for hire on the beach on a first come first serve basis.

Setting out from our berth at Oranjestad pier, we'll make our way into the island's hinterland - passing by Eagle Beach as we go. With a mix of indigenous and colonial history, the island boasts sites both ancient and modern. From the cave paintings at the Ayo Rock Formations to the largest desalination plant in the Caribbean, due to a lack of naturally occuring water on the island, Aruba is both breathaking and fascinating. Our exploration today will take in some of Aruba's highlights and delve into the island's story.
