Evening: Program orientation scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Dickenson Conference Center. We will review the program information, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have.

Activity note: This hike at the Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve will be appropriate for all levels, and will inform participants what to expect from the different activity levels throughout the rest of the week.

Breakfast: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Morning: The first hike will be at the Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve in Russell County, Virginia. Located at the confluence of the Clinch River and Big Cedar Creek, the preserve's namesake and centerpiece is the Pinnacle, a dolomite formation rising 400 feet (120 m) above the creek. This hike will be appropriate for all levels, and will inform participants what to expect from the different activity levels throughout the week.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch on the trail

Afternoon: We’ll finish our hikes and return to the 4-H Center for a refreshing yoga class designed for the Road Scholar hiking program.

Dinner: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Activity note: “Outdoor: No Sweat” participants will enjoy an approx. 5 mile walk on a well-groomed, cinder trail with gradual elevation changes. “Outdoor: Spirited” participants will enjoy an approx. 5 mile hike on maintained trails including some elevation changes and a variety of trail surfaces. “Outdoor: Challenging” participants will be hiking approx. 7 mile loops of the Southwest Virginia portion of the mountainous Appalachian Trail. Hiking destinations subject to change.

Breakfast: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Morning: Participants who would like to can participate in a 7:15 a.m. Center informational walk around the 4-H Center campus with a staff member. Participants will depart at 9:00 a.m. for different hikes. "Outdoor: No Sweat" hike will be approximately 5 miles on the Virginia Creeper Trail from Abingdon to Watauga section. The paths on the Virginia Creeper Trail are through cool forests, stone cliff outcrops, alongside creeks, and over historic wooden railroad trestles. "Outdoor: Spirited" hike will be approximately 4.5 miles along the ridge line of Hidden Valley Lake. "Outdoor: Challenging" hike will be approximately 6 miles in the Channels Natural Area Preserve.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch on the trail

Afternoon: We’ll finish our hikes and return to the 4-H Center for a nature talk given by a local expert.

Dinner: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Evening: Enjoy a private concert at the 4-H Center by local musicians.

Activity note: "Outdoor: No Sweat” participants will enjoy an approx. 5 mile walk on a well-groomed, cinder trail with gradual elevation changes. “Outdoor: Spirited” participants will enjoy an approx. 5 mile hike on maintained trails including some elevation changes and a variety of trail surfaces. “Outdoor: Challenging” participants will be hiking approx. 6-7 mountainous miles. Hiking destinations subject to change.

Breakfast: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Morning: At 7:00 a.m. a yoga class designed for our Road Scholar Hiking program will be offered. Participants will depart at 9:00 a.m. for different hikes. "Outdoor: No Sweat" hikes will be approximately 5 miles on the Virginia Creeper Trail: Watauga to Alvarado. The paths on the Virginia Creeper Trail are through cool forests, stone cliff outcrops, alongside creeks, and over historic wooden railroad trestles. "Outdoor: Spirited" hikes will be approx. 5 miles at Hungry Mother State Park. "Outdoor: Challenging" hike will be approximately 6 to 7 miles on the Appalachian Trail from Elk Garden to Buzzard Rock.

Lunch: Picnic lunch on the trail.

Afternoon: Return to 4-H Center for free time.

Dinner: Enjoy a local farm-to-table experience at the nationally celebrated Harvest Table Restaurant in Meadowview, VA, only about 4 miles from the 4-H Center.

Activity note: “Outdoor: No Sweat” participants will enjoy an approx. 5 mile walk on a well-groomed, cinder trail with gradual elevation changes. “Outdoor: Spirited” participants will enjoy an approx. 5 mile hike on maintained trails including some elevation changes and a variety of trail surfaces. “Outdoor: Challenging” participants will be hiking approx. 7 mile loops of the Southwest Virginia portion of the mountainous Appalachian Trail. Hiking destinations subject to change.

Breakfast: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Morning: Optional early morning Center trail walk for participants. Participants will depart at 9:00 a.m. for different hikes. "Outdoor: No Sweat" hikes will be approximately 5 miles on Virginia Creeper Trail: Straight Branch to Damascus. The paths on the Virginia Creeper Trail are through cool forests, stone cliff outcrops, alongside creeks, and over historic wooden railroad trestles. "Outdoor: Spirited" hike will be approximately 5 miles at Grayson Highlands State Park. "Outdoor: Challenging" will enjoy an approximately 6 miles in the Grayson Highlands State Park, with paths along the Appalachian Trail.

Lunch: Picnic Lunch on the trail

Afternoon: Participants will return to the 4-H Center. A free afternoon for our hiking Road Scholars to rest and get ready for evening activities.

Dinner: Dining Hall at 4-H Center

Evening: Participant will enjoy a performance at the world famous Barter Theatre. Barter is a professional, repertory theater and the State Theater of Virginia.
