This program exceeded my expectations by far. I have had an interest in Inca culture for many years and to finally be able to experience it in some small way through this program was very gratifying. The various accommodations and all people involved were excellent.

This was my first Road Scholar trip. Everything about this trip was perfectly planned and organized. The logistics were flawless. The guides could not have been more approachable and warm and better prepared. I loved every minute and will plan on another Road Scholar trip in the future.

this is the first time I went on a Road scholar trip! It was nice that someone came to meet us at the airport. I am so happy that I made this trip- a trip of a lifetime! I felt I was fit to make the trip. It was paced well, so we visited different archeological sites and also interacted with the local people. I learned so much about making the various pieces form alpaca wool. The food was great, the breakfast choices at the Sonesta were endless! It was nice to stay in different style hotels, the first one had a roof top hot tub! I loved taking the train to Machu Pichu with the domed roof!

The trip to Peru and Machu Picchu was a great trip with amazing views and insights into the architecture of the Inca. The food markets showed off views of hundreds of varieties of potatoes - just a small portion of the 2000 plus varieties in Peru. Who knew that there were 13 million people in Lima...

This was my sixth Road Scholar trip, and they all have been excellent - but this one was truly exceptional in both the range of content/experiences and the quality of the leadership - by Paco overall, and the additional hosting by Javier in the Sacred Valley. Not to be missed!

Another wonderful experience with Road Scholar! This was my second trip and I look forward to many more adventures in the years ahead.

Peru is a wonderfully beautiful and culturally rich country. It is much more than just Machu Picchu! The "Taste of Peru" made me want more.

The Taste of Peru tour was short but sweet. The group leader and especially the guide at Cusco were terrific. Machu Picchu exceeded my expectations.

WOW! Just got back from this trip and I'd like to give it 10 stars. I was expecting a good experience, but it was so much more than that. Of course, Macchu Picchu was awe inspiring, but the lectures, hands-on experiences and other local site were also just outstanding. I can't believe we got to do so much in the amount of time we had.

I am so glad we took A Taste of Peru: Discover Lima, Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu. This program met our expectations of learning and adventure and visiting Machu Picchu in a safe way. Our group leader Christian Vera is a "rock star" in all aspects: his knowledge of Peru, his very caring, warm, friendly, reassuring personality, his communication and organizational skills played a big role in making this program enjoyable and successful.

As a first time Road Scholar traveler, the 'Taste of Peru' experience was excellent and a well planned excursion - I highly recommend!

Christian Vera was the best of the best in every way. He is an extremely kind and highly intelligent person and a very good speaker. Jorge was also excellent and humorous and a good speaker and so smart. Ruth in Lima was a great tour guide and knows her stuff. Every single speaker was incredibly highly intelligent and wonderful. I especially liked the geographer and political speaker. Such a great perspective. All of the speakers were excellent and so intelligent. The only slightly negative thing was the Lima hotel was loud, but the management personnel and food was good there. All of the other hotels were very good, quiet, and excellent. The bus drivers and buses were great. The efficiency of getting in and out of sites, on and off trains was so fluid and easy. Bathroom breaks were appreciated and thoughtful. I think the entire trip was excellent, with Christian Vera being the shining star of all the wonderful guides. (Jorge too!). This trip is wonderful and highly recommended. The restaurant selections and food was excellent. You may hear complaints about Misur, the last restaurant and the noise level, but the food and atmosphere were extremely nice. I think it was just a fluke that we had a very loud group of kids next to us drinking. I would go back to that restaurant in a heartbeat if I ever go to Cusco again. Rave reviews for everything and everybody, but most especially Christian (and Jorge too)

This was my first solo travel to another country with Road Scholar. It was a wonderful learning experience and I plan to do it again. I highly recommend it with other learners.

I've now been on two RS trips and chose them because they are places that need a good historical baseline and excellent guides to truly understand. Egypt and Peru are were just exceptional with wonderful history and highly educated and skilled guides that helped us learn about the Pharohs and the Incas!

I particularly enjoyed the lectures, and different areas of Peru , we were able to visit. Of course Macchu Picchu, but the other Inca sites were very impressive. Peru is a beautiful country and we were able to see many aspects of that: the Pacific coast, Sacred Valley, Cusco, and surrounding areas of the Andes. Seeing the markets, weaving, musical instruments, pottery, and the lunch in the private home really made the trip .

I loved the Taste of Peru trip culturally, aesthetically and historically. It will be an enduring lifetime highlight for me.

Peru was an overall great trip, so check off on my bucket list! An active itinerary for a 68 year old (arthritic knee, lower back issues), but I know my limitations. There was only one activity (lots of stairs at high elevation) that I knew I would not do, but was surprised/relieved there was an alternative, so I feel I did not lose out on any sites at all. I was very impressed with Road Scholar when our Machu Picchu visit was possibly not going to happen (due to protests), then a few days later re-scheduled - so a very happy outcome. Perfect weather every day (mid September) - so our group lucked out big time. Guides and lectures were excellent!

This trip was fantastic and exceeded expectations. Coming from living at sea level, we did take acetazolamide before ascending to Cusco and experienced no symptoms of altitude sickness. The program's planned acclimatization seemed to prevent any problems for the rest of our group who did not take acetazolamide. We are physically active and had no problems with the terrain and did not need walking sticks.

I have to say that I was incredibly impressed with this trip! Paco, our fearless leader, and Kathy, made this a terrific trip. They took care of all the details and that was a huge relief for me. I had also become ill during the course of the trip and the attention and concern I received from Paco and his staff was amazing! If you are planning on going to Machu Picchu, I highly recommend having Paco lead your group. Looking forward to further adventures with Road Scholar!

I went on the Taste of Peru tour. It was my first international trip! The description of the trip met my expectations. I had a wonderful time! Our tour guides Paco and Kathy were excellent! I signed up for a regular tour, even though I am single. The group dynamic worked out great, as it wasn't just all couples. They allow some space for singles. Road Scholar is very organized and I recommend using them. Peru is a part of my heart now.

This experience was a great introduction to a beautiful country and culture by locals! Highly recommend!
— Review left September 7, 2025
Parts of the program were physically challenging to me because of the height of Cusco and surrounding areas. I could handle Machu Picchu, which is lower, but not Cusco. I think that this should be made clear. I would still go again but will know my limitations when planning other such trips. Maccu Picchu was incredible and well worth the whole trip.

The program was wonderful with Machu Picchu and other magnificent Inca Ruins. Also learning about the civilization that preceded the Inca was very educational. The Peruvian food was great also?!

If Peru and Machu Picchu are on your bucket list, this tour is for you! I learned that there is much, much more to appreciate about Peru than Incan ruins. What a wonderful country! This is a wonderful way to learn about and experience it with Road Scholar!

This was absolutely the best trip I've taken with Road Scholar. Eliacin Palomino was the very best tour guide I have ever experienced. He was so attentive to solo women and making sure we were all taken care of. He even had a birthday cake for me when he found out my birthday was during the trip. The country is so colorful, and all the experiences were chosen to show us the very best of Peru. It was a dream come true to see Machu Picchu and learn about the Inca culture as well as experience day to day life in Peru. He picked up bread at a local market for us to taste and got fruit for all of us to sample. Best trip ever!

Great trip and our group leader Sheila was amazing. She was smart, organized, spoke excellent English, and had a great sense of humor. She was tuned into all participants and so helpful. We went at the end of May and had beautiful weather. Activities and guest lecturers were all interesting and informative. The Andes Mountains and Inca culture is really something to learn about and the scenery, especially in Machu Picchu was stunning. Our tour guide, Paco, was very knowledgeable and with us for several days. We always had access to fresh water in a large box, both on a comfortable bus and in the hotels, so bring refillable water bottles. Sheila even had extra refillable bottles. The hotel in the Sacred Valley was really quite fancy and beautiful! Be mindful not to drink or brush with any tap water. We used Diamox to help prevent altitude sickness, which seemed to work, although we did feel the altitude. What a great trip! Highly recommend.

My knowledge of Spanish colonialism was pretty weak until this very well produced trip. I highly suggest you read a book called the gold eaters by Ronald wright before or during the tour as it added enormously to my appreciation and understanding of Peru and it’s fascinating history.

Excellent trip. Well planned; good accommodations and food. Enrique was an excellent guide throughout the trip. He and Pilar went above and beyond when my brother was hospitalized overnight.
I also highly commend the 3 lecturers; in each case I was amazed how much I learned in an hour.

Trip of a lifetime! Definitely 5 stars! This was my third RS tour and I was not disappointed. Enrique (Kikè) and Cristian were outstanding tour guides. Of course, Machu Pichu was a highlight, but there are many amazing Incan archaeological sites in Peru. I’ll never forget climbing up the stone terraces at Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley and viewing the circular terraces of Moray. Also, colorful visits to the fruit and fish markets, a Shaman blessing beneath the majestic Andean mountains, viewing the salt flats in Maras and so much more. The lecturers were all excellent and provided depth regarding biodiversity, history, economics, politics, agriculture, gastronomy and music. I’ll miss our delicious group meals and pisco sours!

Five stars for this exceptional, thrilling journey! Peru is gorgeous, the culture is rich, the food is great, the people are welcoming! JC and Yashi, our warm, highly knowledgable, and witty guides, are outstanding. The material they presented, along with the excellent lectures, really enhanced my experience. I appreciated the gradual acclimation to altitude and felt well prepared for the agenda for each very full day. Our group was lovely!
The high point of a trip to Peru is Machu Picchu, which despite the rain was a real sensation, but all the other aspects of the trip were fabulous as well. This rewarding, very active trip exceeded my high expectations!

This was my first time in South America and it did not disappoint! Our leader- Sheila Robles was amazing. She went out of her way to accommodate special requests and was very fun and knowledgeable. Seeing all the great sites in Lima and then flying to Cusco and Sacred Valley and visiting Machu Picchu was top notch. Sheila even had a surprise visit to a pottery maker that really was fascinating to watch. Definitely would recommend this trip. 5 stars!

This was a great trip, with a packed itinerary, lots of walking & not for the faint of heart. Lectures, food, hotels,& sites were terrific. Take good hiking boots, rain gear, warm jacket, layers of clothing, trekker poles & camera- all are advised! Try the Pisco sour, coca tea -I had it 1-2 x/daily! Machu Picchu was the hi-lite!!Worth the climb! I had altitude issues in spite of the medication used! At 86, I was the eldest member, with rest in 60 to early 70's; If not for Covid, I would have done this 5 years earlier!!

This was my 3rd with RS, and once again RS knocked it out of the park. And, again, the quality of the guides as well as information shared made it special. Our main guide, Victor Colunga (sp?) had a lot to do with making it special. He was informative, detailed oriented, and concerned about the needs of individuals in the group. His "highlands" helper, Kathy was equally informative and, like Victor, just fun to be around.
My only suggestion would be possibly work around the arrival and departures, so the last day was less of an ordeal. Maybe do all of our Lima time at the end, so we leave Cusco a day earlier, making the trip home less of a marathon.

The A Taste of Peru trip was fabulous beyond my hopes. Paco managed the group, our smallest needs and wishes, extremely well. His breath of knowledge was fantastic and he was a joy! When I had a reaction to the high elevation- his response with immediate.
Lima, the Sacred Valley, Cusco and Machu Picchu were amazing. Insight into the geography, politics, economy and culture were critically important to truly experiencing Peru. All of the experts were knowledgeable and willing to share their wisdom about Peru. The bus drivers were excellent. The whispers are great- but go bluetooth- the wires get caught while trying to get on and off the bus.
This was my first Road Scholar trip and I am sold. My next RS trip is later this year!

The trip was great and the leaders were wonderful. I would recommend that they change the hotel in Aguas Calientes as it is right next to the train tracks so it was very noisy. They told us the tourist trains stopped at 9pm but the trains kept running all night. Many of us did not get any sleep that night. Fortunately we were only there one night and the remaining hotels were all wonderful. That hotel was the only negative as the rest of the experience was amazing.

This "Taste of Peru" was a perfect introduction to the country. I learned a lot and enjoyed experiencing some of the complexity of Peru. There is a lot there! This program is a great way to start or to get just enough for an enduring appreciation.

This was my third RS trip and once again, I had a terrific time. The first day in Lima helped us get our bearings before going to Cusco. Our guide took us to several interesting places including a pyramid and catacombs. The two lectures we had, including recent history, politics and economics grounded us.
Our group leader and guides made a great team, leading and informing, and helping the participants who struggled with altitude sickness. (BTW I took diamox prescribed by my physician and it worked well for me.)
They made sure we had lots of rest breaks and water. Some days were very strenuous. I followed an exercise program for several months before the trip and I was glad I did. Being able to climb lots of steep steps is very important. One person’s device clocked that climbing the Temple of the Sun was 230 steps. Straight up in full sun.
One of our days in the Sacred Valley was visiting a market, the salt flats and Moray ruins. Learning about Incan agriculture was fascinating. And by the way, almost all our meals were terrific!
I signed up for an extra morning trip up to Machu Picchu. I do not know if they will offer it again. The train schedule changed and we only had an hour, but that extra hour there at sunrise was a real trip highpoint for me. You need to ask for it way in advance since there are no last minute tickets.
I also loved the visit to the Cooperative Montera. The weavers gave us a demo on preparing and dyeing yard and showed us how they wove. We also were able to purchase really high quality items from them at deep discount compared to the shops in Cusco. I wish I had bought more! And we got to take photos of the weavers who made the items!
Our group was micro and having only 12 people made it really fun. Everyone I was with was interesting and the smallness meant we got to know each other. I will be seeking out other micro groups.
Thank you R.S. for another great trip.

Thank you, Road Scholar. I look forward to our next adventure with you.

This was my first tour with Road Scholar, and it certainly won't be my last. It met or exceeded all of my expectations. Our tour leader, Eliacin, was superb, available 24/7 and doing so much to keep us safe, comfortable, informed, and prepared for each day's activities. The local guides and lecturers were incredible, showing genuine excitement for what they shared and demonstrating tremendous skill as teachers. The trip certainly deserves its "Keep the Pace" designation, but the itinerary is well designed to help travelers adjust to the physical demands and high altitude (and those less ambitious about uphill travel were sometimes given the option to stop and wait at a scenic view spot or marketplace while the rest of us continued onward and upward). In addition to seeing Machu Picchu and several other fascinating archaeological sites, I learned a tremendous amount about Peru's history, climate, politics, economy, culture, food, music, and more. I found every hotel very comfortable, and the food was both plentiful and delicious. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour!

This was a wonderful trip--many more historic sites than we imagined. We particularly enjoyed the lectures on biodiversity and politics. Our guides, Juan Carlos and Kathy, were superb! Our group was so compatible we chose to have meals together even on our free time.

An very interesting and informative program covering many aspects of Peru's pre-colonial history as well as aspects of modern life and culture. Walking stick(s) highly recommended as is medication to prevent symptoms of high-altitude illness. While Machu Picchu is a real highlight, there is so much more to learn about and enjoy.

I can't say enough positive things about this trip. For me it was at the top of my bucket list and I was not disappointed. Road Scholar made the trip interesting, informative, fun, active and challenging. Our tour guides were the best. To have an archeologist travel with us was wonderful. The hotels were all very nice, the food was outstanding and the speakers and activities that were arranged for us added a great dimension to the learning experience. My only request would be a way that people with hearing aids be able to tune into the Whisper on some sort of Bluetooth instead of trying to wear over the ear buds which kept falling out. Very frustrating. Without a doubt I will opt for another Road Scholar experience. The organization and attention to detail was outstanding from start to finish.

The tour "A Taste of Peru" was outstanding! Machu Picchu was spectacular, as expected; and the lectures and tour activities also give one a real sense of what life in Peru is like today. However, the hiking at high elevations was quite strenuous, and if you have any serious physical limitations, this may not be the tour for you.

This was an amazing program from start to finish. Our guide Victor was the consummate professional: caring, knowledgeable, and generous with his time and energy. All the lectures and local guides were simply fantastic, and helped to create a rich context for our experiential learning. Peru is breathtaking, and the Road Scholar itinerary is full and fabulous. It felt like a dream to visit Machu Picchu, and was utterly fascinating to engage with other Inca sites, learn from local artisans, and experience a deeply moving blessing from a shaman. This trip was perfect from start to finish: I felt challenged to learn but always safe and well cared for as a solo female traveler. I can't recommend this trip highly enough!!!

Going to Machu Picchu has been a childhood dream of mine and Road Scholar's tour delivered in gold. Days were packed with experiencing the joy of Peruvian people, their ancient and current traditions, their delicious and their healthy cuisine. Going to the many ancient cities of the Incas and learning about their ability to mark time with the sun and construct massive earthquake-proof structures with all sizes of granite stone ... well, you just have to be there and experience this. Get in shape by walking and climbing stairs and then GO!

Wow! I get to write a review.
it was good-1st day was too much for all of us after the travel to get there. We could have used a later start and skipped going to a fish market and looking at the beach.
2nd issue was dinner was always too late-your demographic was roughly 70-80 years old and eating that late at night was not good for them, (or me, 57 yrs old)
Other than that it was a good trip.

An amazing program to learn about a part of the world that I wasn't familiar with. I had taken the Online Adventure about Peru, and became intrigued enough to do this in-person program. Group Leader Kike and all of the guides/instructors - especially Kathy - were the best. Many do this program just to see Machu Picchu, which was great (we were blessed with sunshine!), but I found the entire program to be so very meaningful and experiential. A jam-packed program to see this beautiful country and meet very welcoming people!

Great introduction to Peru. Full of lectures and tours. Never a dull moment. A little more strenuous than I expected -- especially walks/hikes at 11,000 feet. But I'm so happy I did this trip.

Road Scholar did an excellent job in organizing this tour. It was a well thought out tour that was interesting, informative, efficient and safe . Juan Carlos the lead tour guide was a wonderful host who along with the other guides , bus drivers, lecturers and hotel staffers were generous in sharing their beloved Peru . It was a memorable adventure filled with challenges and new ways of seeing the world. I hope someday to return to Peru.

This is a big bucket list trip. Every moment was enlightening, adventurous, and entertaining. Machu Picchu was a challenging hike. You should be prepared by using stairs a few months before your trip. There were ancient pyramids that we were allowed to walk up to the top. Older Inca villages that were climbed the day after Machu Picchu were fascinating. Sacsayhuaman was a great place for free time exploring on our own. Good broken-in shoes or hiking boots are required. Bring two pairs. I was most proud of the woman-owned business, which demonstrated the organic weaving of the alpaca wool.

Going to Machu Picchu was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream of mine. It was so much more than I expected. The trip was planned to help you adjust to the high altitudes of the Andes, and we were coached on what to expect. In addition to Machu Picchu, we saw a lot of other ruins, terraced farming, learned about how the Incas developed their calendar. We also learned about current events in Peru. A wonderful trip.

I came for Machu Picchu and found a whole Peruvian culture and history! In true Road Scholar fashion, the written materials and descriptions tell only a portion of the tale. I don't know how Road Scholar finds the "extra touches," but the combination of informational materials, cultural exposure, expert guides and hassle-free timing all make this trip a lifetime experience.
Fifty years ago, my bride and I wanted to visit Machu Picchu, but we were never able to. It has been on my to-do list ever since, and it was everything I hoped it would be, and more! Yes, I came to experience Machu Picchu, and Road Scholar delivered it -- and more -- in spades!

Ever since I was a girl of twelve, I have dreamed of going to Peru! Now that I've been there and back, I feel that the Road Scholar trip was the best possible way for me to have realized my dream. The trip was beautifully organized from start to finish. Our guide Sheila did an extraordinary job of sharing her deep and intimate knowledge of her culture with us. The range of experiences we were provided with seemed beautifully curated and wonderfully varied: from ruins to natural landscapes, local markets, museums, arts-and-crafts collectives, and more....The choice of restaurants was excellent, and the food so delicious! We all felt so well taken care of, with transportation, tickets, and transfers all arranged for us. All in all, it was an experience that I will forever treasure.

If you are thinking about taking this trip, I encourage to do so, you won’t be disappointed. Peru is a beautiful country and its people are warm and welcoming. Starting at sea level and then venturing on to the high Andes, the variety in climate, topography and vegetation you see, will astound you. After receiving the final Information packet, I was overly concerned about mosquitos, which were not an issue except in the area of Machu Pichu. I treated my clothes with Permethrin prior to leaving home. I wore long pants and long sleeves as advised, and as someone who usually attracts any mosquito in the neighborhood, I didn’t experience a single bit, and neither did anyone else in our group. I did witness a man in shorts whose legs were covered in bites as he passed by us on the way down. Coca tea is very beneficial with helping adapt to the higher elevations so I drank it every morning once we left Lima. Our group leader Victor was absolutely wonderful and our local guides were excellent sources of local knowledge, history of the local people, and of the Inka and Pre-Columbian civilizations. Our Guide Coco took us up Machu Pichu, and Olllantaytambo slowly in incremental steps that allowed everyone to rest and adjust to the elevations. The packing list is important, you do need trekking poles and a rain jacket as while we were in Machu Pichu the weather changed 4 times, going from full sun, to clouds, to drizzle, to a thunder storm and hard rain, and back to full sun. It does get very cool and windy in Cusco and a packable puffy jacket is a good idea. If you have the chance, get the Inka Massage. I had the best massage of my life at the hotel Spa at Casa Andina Premium Valle Sagrado. The food throughout was excellent, it was well seasoned and flavorful, but not spicy. Do have a Pico sour, the national cocktail. Peru is waiting for you, don’t miss it.

This was my first Road Scholar trip and it was wonderful! Due to the high elevations in Peru, it was a bit more strenuous than anticipated but well worth the effort. Machu Picchu was of course the highlight but the other sites and activities added greatly to my enjoyment. Our instructors were very engaging and our trip guide was absolutely amazing!!

Walking the steep inclines, whether in the city or countryside, were difficult but I knew they would be challenging. I did some of the recommended exercises beforehand which helped. I tried not to hold back the group, but others also struggled somewhat. Regardless, I would do it all again!!!!

As a first time traveler with Roads Scholar I was very pleased with the attention to detail and thoroughness of the trips activities, accommodations and excellent guides. With the recent political unrest in Peru, I was hesitant to even go, but once there it was evident Road Scholar had successfully monitored the political situation and made sure it was save for travelers. Great job Roads Scholar, I’ll be seeing you in the future!

Wonderful trip. Our guide Elias was excellent and arranged some excellent educational presentations - music, geological formation, politics, farming, etc. Knowledge of the culture and the people of the towns and villages really made this trip so interesting. Machu Picchu has been on our bucket list for some time and I'm glad we made the trip when we did - they are building an observation point and it appears at some point tourists won't be able to climb into the structures in the future to avoid further erosion. I highly recommend this trip

Taste of Peru was, overall, a good experience. This was my first Roads Scholar trip and I was very impressed with how smoothly everything went. The transportation, hotels, places to visit and guidance were all first rate. What made this trip particularly good was our guide, Eliacin. If every tour guide was as good as he is no tour program would want for customers.
My only complaints are there was too much time for meals, too many meals and too much food. I would also have preferred more time to hike and experience the Incan ruins. Our "ruins" guide, Ronald, was passionate about the structures he talked about during the tours but he could use some coaching re: streamlining his presentations.
I was a little surprised to find myself in three formal lectures regarding Peru's ecology, economy/politics and agriculture. These were good lectures, but I would have appreciated them more if they had been given while we were out and about (visiting the fish market, the food market in the Sacred Valley, the main square in Lima). But, that is how I am - not that gung ho for classroom lectures.
Machu Picchu was terrific. I am so glad I had this chance to visit this remarkable site. I was very prepared for the visit and all my expectations were met.
I am very likely to do another Road Scholars program in the future now that I know how it will go.

The program included visits to many wonderful sites and offered a great introduction to the Incas and their predecessors. The guides were very well prepared and knowledgeable of ancient culture and contemporary Peruvian life. Be ready for lots of walking, visiting some amazing archeological places, and meeting interesting local people. Our group included people from all over the country who made the trip even more interesting. Highly recommend this tour which had the right mix of adventure and free time. All the accommodations and transportation services were comfortable. The preparation materials were very helpful. Although the Peru Ministry of Culture states in their materials that walking sticks are not permitted in Machu Picchu, they are indeed allowed and very helpful; be prepared for biting insects at this most amazing place by using insect repellant and wearing long sleeves. Overall, another great Road Scholar experience!

Outstanding trip! Everything about this adventure was exciting. Visiting Machu Picchu requires perfect planning as strict rules apply and timing must be carefully coordinated. Our superior guides handled all of this, making the trip appear seamless. No words can describe the beauty of Peru, it really must be experienced and even then it is hard to believe something could be so breathtaking. We enjoyed Lima, Cusco, The Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and so much more. Interesting lectures ranging from economics to ancient music added much to our learning and enjoyment. The food on this trip was excellent and for those that wanted we enjoyed a Pisco Sour or two! If you can schedule this trip do so as soon as possible, you will be happy you did.

It was definitely a fast paced program, and it was so much fun. Our group was filled with smart, educated, and kind people. I made several friends and we are now staying in touch. My first, but hopefully not my last, Road Scholar trip. As a frequent traveler who normally goes off on my own, I was a bit hesitant to go on a structured program like this one. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed just sitting back and letting our very competent guide, Elias, take care of all the details of this week long tour. I had no fear that my expectations wouldn't be met as he had every little detail under control. His frequent "check ins" with me that all was "Okie dokie" (as he put it) was refreshing. I highly recommend Road Scholar for your travel tour experience. As was I, you'll not be disappointed.

What a memorable trip! So much is packed into a short week.
First of all, while Machu Picchu is indeed wonderful and Inca architecture is monumental, there is so much more to Andean cultures. This trip tantalizes and makes me to want visit Peru again soon to explore the different cultures.
Our trip is made extremely pleasurable by our guide Paco whose superb organization skill and caring personality made him an ideal leader for this trip. As with my other RS trips, my fellow travelers are a friendly and inquisitive group, interested in exploring other cultures in a respectful way.
Peruvian food is a big surprise-- we did not know how good it was and the its variety. There was not a single bad meal on this trip and even the buffets are remarkably good. I was thrilled to try the local specialty --Cuy (Guinea Pig). OK, so it tasted like chicken. :)
All the hotel accommodations are good to excellent. Our favorite was the Casa Andina Machu Picchu where we were upgraded to river-view rooms and we went to sleep next to the rumble of a raging river -- best night of sleep for me.
Highly recommended, only wish it was longer.

This is not for a review, but forgot to mention this -- Peru is the perfect place for an extension. I'm sure Covid caused some revision for you. I extended my trip and took PeruHop to Paracas and some extra time in Lima -- amazingly wonderful places. The National Park was beyond beautiful.
My sister likes to travel to Western Europe but I enticed her on this trip because I love the discovery of other cultures and the diversity. I think I converted her. There is nothing I would change, unless it was possible to make the days longer so more of this diverse nation and its welcoming culture could be savored. Lima sits on a high bluff over the Pacific, spectacular views. The center of the country is wide open with vast spaces, wide skies and the Andes on the horizon, some snowcapped. It has that kind of the "end of the earth" feeling, room to move and explore. The highly developed pre-Columbian culture, and the people who still live as their ancestors did added to the richness. Just as the Grand Canyon is not the sum total of the U.S., Macchu Picchu is not the totality of Peru. As always on a Road Scholar trip amazing well-educated guides and interesting companions.

My Trip to Peru
I left my home in Evanston eleven days ago and returned home yesterday. I feel as if I had spent ten days in the garden of Eden, a land where rivers of cool fresh water come tumbling down from snow peeked mountain tops to water trees and bushes growing colorful flowers and sheltering multitudes of colorful species of birds, irrigating vast farms producing bountiful foods and fruits not grown anywhere else, and studded here and there with ancient ruins of temples to the sun God, mother earth and life itself with the past (symbolized by the serpent), the present (symbolized by puma) and the future (symbolized by the condor). I felt God was present everywhere. I saw llamas, alpacas, dogs and cats roaming freely amongst people in celebratory cheerful bright colors with the cheer, humility and hospitality of a people cradled in the arms of a bountiful, gentle and merciful God.
Such an experience could only be had in a carefully orchestrated program led by soulful, thoughtful, hardworking, knowledgeable and caring leader such as Paco and his assistant Jorge.
I thank them for this gift which to me is life transforming.

Seeing Machu Picchu has been on my 'to do' list for a very long time so I was very excited to finally get there. What I found though was that there was so much more to a Road Scholar trip (this was my first) and I can't believe how much that additional learning opportunities and experiences were included that made it a much more special trip than I could have imagined. It made me fall in love with Peru.
I also realized that before going I was overly concerned about the altitude and strenuousness of the trip. I am one of average fitness and it was just fine. I also knew that if I had any difficulty keeping up there would always be a staff person to assist.

The highlight is learning about Inca culture and its impact on modern day Peru. The lectures ranged from politics to agriculture to music. Each lecturer was engaging and informative. Our primary guides, Vlad and Eduard , were outstanding. They were knowledgeable , proud of their country and attentive to our needs. I found all but one hotel satisfactory. This was a very good trip. We saw it all. Good leaders, good food (too good and too plentiful), and of course Machu Picchu is super. Be prepared for altitude challenges.
Only criticism: the trip could have included a bit more exercise, the only real exertion was at Machu Picchu. Also, fewer food market visits (there were 3), and perhaps add a visit to a silversmith or some other indigenous craftsman.

An amazing program and one I highly recommend. The days were full with lectures, demonstrations, and tours. Exceptionally knowledgeable tour leaders, lecturers, and guides provided not only information but imparted their deep pride in their country, its history, and culture. The small group size (12 participants) was perfect. Machu Picchu was amazing and worth the physical effort.

Perspectives of Peru was a greatly informative and explorative program. This was my first group trip, and it completely blew me away. The lodging was immaculate, and the meals were the finest available. Our local guides, Enrique and Ronaldo, immersed us in Peruvian culture and history. This program needs to be a few days longer to allow more exploration of cultural sites. This trip was like a trailer for a movie, you get the highlights, but you end up wanting to see more! The aforementioned staff were easy to deal with, accomodating, and overall great representatives. I am much younger than the usual demographics for Road Scholar, but even I want to retire to Peru after this trip!

This program exceeded my expectations. Our guides, Enrico and Ronald, were skilled, kind, and exceptionally competent and knowledgeable. Peru is more than MachuPicchu. The country is diverse, charming, warm, welcoming. There is astounding depth to the history and culture. I would be glad to return for more!!!
