Visiting Cuba opened my eyes to the reality of daily life for Cubans. Despite the negative impact of the US government's embargo and policies toward the country, I was surprised that ordinary Cubans said they like Americans. Humbled. I wish we could help more during their dire economic situation. Outstanding guides and participants.

This trip had it all: a great group of folks, exceptional educators and guides, a stellar bus driver and a fabulous itinerary. As my first ROADSCHOLAR trip, it truly checked all the boxes. Cuba can be a difficult country to visit, even with everything well planned, but if any glitches occurred they were behind-the-scenes and I never experienced any issues at all. The Cuban people are engaging, warm and welcoming and it is clear our guides - Carlos and Anabel - were well respected everywhere we visited. The morning educational sessions were exactly the right length of time to provide us with knowledge of Cuba's past and present and explore subjects important to this country. Carlos' deep knowledge of Cuba and world events was ideal for questions we had along the way. He kept things moving forward in the background and always had a fun place to suggest we visit on our own when time allowed. Anabel brought out the current Cuban political situation in her explanation of the day in the life of a Cuban, highlighting all she received from the government and minimizing the flaws. Luis, our driver, clearly had levitation powers to get us down some of those small streets. They formed a stellar team and represented ROADSCHOLAR perfectly. It is sad to know the people we met will now struggle with the restrictions being placed on this lovely country. The Cuban people are resilient and kind and I hope they retain those qualities during this difficult time. I would strongly encourage anyone considering Cuba to go with ROADSCHOLAR and plan a trip as soon as the political situation allows. The country is beautiful, safe and struggling. It needs outside support.

She knew so much information about Havana and Cuba .Our bus driver,Luis, was amazing as well. I learned so much about the history, culture and ways of the Cuban people. We experienced some blackout conditions, but overall, accommodations and restaurants were perfect! I will highly recommend this trip to others. I only hope and pray Cuba will remain open to tourists.

This unforgettable journey to Cuba offered a deep and engaging look into the country’s people, culture, and history. Guided by an exceptional team, the trip combined expert insight with seamless organization, allowing participants to fully enjoy every experience, even amidst obvious issues that the country is currently dealing with. Highlights included a fascinating tour of Havana in a classic car, immersive cultural experiences, and truly world-class music and dance performances that brought Cuba’s vibrant artistic traditions to life. Throughout the trip, we learned not only about historical landmarks, but also about everyday life in Cuba, gaining meaningful insight into the resilience, creativity, and warmth of its people.

As first time Road Scholar travelers, we were highly impressed with our trip to Cuba. The Road Scholar team is professional and organized making us fully prepared for our trip and with all our requests fulfilled. The guide was truly excellent and we felt protected throughout. Our time was organized in such a way that we learned a lot through lecturers, special programs and the sites we visited. There was a good balance. Our accommodations and meals were amazing given the price of the program. We would highly recommend Road Scholar to anyone interested in learning more about our world through travel.

The group leaders were excellent and the other participants were friendly, interesting and inclusive. The accommodations and the program was excellent and so well planned. Every U.S. citizen needs to make a trip to Cuba and then decide what the U.S.'s position should be with our neighbor. U.S. citizens are getting a very biased view of Cuba through the media. If Cuba fails financially as a country, the U.S. will likely not like the results and wish they had gotten better informed and taken actions.

Road Scholar has put together this remarkable study tour through Cuba. We stayed in lovely accommodations, ate wonderful meals in privately owned paladares, and saw a glimpse of the incredibly resourceful Cuban people. There was little traffic, but the roads are rough, giving plenty of opportunity to see the countryside on the long bus ride to and from historic Cienfuegos and Trinidad. People were on bicycles, on foot, and sometimes using horse drawn carts. There were old cars of all kinds, in various states of repair. The Cuban people use their talent and engagement to create whatever they can, be it dance, the Cuban beat, fiber arts, woodworking, and beyond. The show at Casa Miglis was unreal, and performed on a tiny stage. One of the woodworkers should hold a world record of some kind for his intricate creations using re-claimed materials. It is interesting to think how Cuba would be today, if not within the confines of their government, and the U.S. trade embargo. Would organic farming be as prevalent? How would widespread access to the distraction and addiction of electronics change the dynamics of creativity? Our guides Carole and Jose Luis made a great team, and I am glad to have had this experience. I will be travelling with Road Scholar in the future.

This was my first Road Scholar trip. I was very impressed with the planning, the detailed communications received, and the quality of the services and educational components. Our leader, Betty Vander Kaaig, juggled every detail of the logistics with skill and grace. She faced special challenges because there were large groups in our hotel in Havana, and the hotel was not wholly equipped to deal with them. Betty made it her personal responsibility to correct the hotel's deficiencies and to ensure that our accommodations were satisfactory. In addition, Betty's devotion to the Cuban people is obvious. She provided a helpful list of items to donate, and she emphasized multiple times that the donations were being distributed and useful to the groups we visited. The instructors were very knowledgeable and engaging speakers. The locations visited, as well as the cultural sites, were very interesting. The return bus trip between Cienfuegos/Trinidad and Havana was quite long. Although there were bathroom breaks and stops, the trip could be improved by an accommodation that offered more of a break in the travel. Our travel companions were interesting and pleasant people. The hotels and restaurants exceeded expectation. Personally, I found that we were offered too much food. I would have preferred lighter meals, especially in light of the needs of the local citizens.

The program was a great opportunity, however there was too much of a surface overview and although the Havana Jazz Festival was happening, this significant event was not included at all in our trip. The guides were lovely, the hotel not prepared for the number of visitors they had and for me, it was to sanitized a journey although I enjoyed lifelong learning in this amazing place.

My wife and I just returned from a trip to Cuba under the Road Scholar program. We are not seasoned world travelers, so we were both excited about the opportunity to visit such a unique country and "anxious" about traveling to Cuba from the US given the challenging relationship between our governments. I don't believe the trip could have been any more AMAZING!! It far exceeded our expectations!! The itinerary was full and diverse and allowed us to see and participate in unique Cuban activities such as singing, dance, dominos. We saw numerous lectures that taught us about the Cuban government, the role of woman in Cuba, religion in the country. We were allowed to interact with the Cuban people and ask them open and honest questions. And, they did the same to us!! Truly an AMAZING experience!!

We enjoyed marvelous music and dancing, and heard from some colorful and expressive Cubans, which imparted great warmth toward the people. The three cities, Havana, Cinenfuegos, and Trinidad, have one feature in common: glorious pre-revolutionary Neoclassical buildings and plazas, a few restored, but most decrepit to the point of squalor. Piles of garbage everywhere. This is a once-advanced country that has been trashed and looted for 60 years by a rapacious dictatorship. The lecturers were mostly government toadies, and we got little but the government line. Why is there no political opposition? “We believe in unity.” Why do only 16% of Cubans go to church? “They practice at home a blend of African spiritism with Catholic symbols.” Do they not hide their religious practice because the State dispenses all the necessities of life? “Well, maybe some do.” The revolution, we learn, has been great for the advancement of women. You mean the ones breaking their backs to get water and wash laundry? There was one siginificant exception to the toadyism—our guide Jose-Luis, a State employee who was astonshingly candid in laying out the difficulties. He was factual and insightful throughout. He allowed that the only answer is “more democracy and a free market economy.” But he was obliged to say it is up to “the government” to bring about these reforms. Nevertheless, he was first-rate. We stayed in elegant First World hotels, rode in a modern motor coach, and ate in top-end private restaurants (“paladares”). There were blackouts most days, but they did not affect us. So we were more comfortable than 95% of the Cuban people. Nice, but it sealed us off from the real Cuba, which we could only glimpse on the street and through the bus windows. Organizing the passage of 18 pampered gringos around so dysfunctional a State in time of crisis and embargo is a huge challenge, and my hat is off to Road Scholar for doing it so smoothly.

Our visit to Cuba was informative and, at times, quite moving. Road Scholar gave me the opportunity to better understand the remarkable resilience of the Cuban people and to experience some of the country's extraordinary cultural offerings. Be prepared, however, by some of the things that you see: the country and its people are encountering profound challenges that may leave you speechless.

Cuba was never on my list of travel destinations. The Road Scholar tour option was a perfect way to access this fascinating island nation, and RS fulfilled whatever few expectations I had. I would surely recommend RS Cuba tours to anyone interested in experiencing Cuba from the confines of an organized tour... something I/we rarely go for, being mostly solo travelers, and it seems the best option for both education and people to people contacts. I cannot imagine having gone there on our own, so thanks to RS for showing us around.

It was a wonderful trip. Good sights; good leaders; good information as we walked; using whispers was great; good pre-trip materials. Great responsiveness from Carole as I was hesitant about going on the trip with hurricanes and power outages. A few suggestions: -insurance info is misleading on website, especially highlighting "no reason" cancellation w/o highlighting fact that purchase after final payment doesn't carry that insurance; -Camillo was great; other 2 were good, but not as good; would be good to have their slides; I'd have more formal talks about public/private economies, government structures/powers, civil rights; -I'd love to have had sessions (optional) each day with Guillermo and Carole to ask more questions and follow up on each day; -instead of lengthy descriptions on the bus, a quick email each evening with times and location for the next am and a rough schedule would be more efficient and easier to remember; -Add Ada Ferrar "Cuba" to the reading list if it's not there already; -Add more opportunities to interact with Cuban people (talking to members of the modern dance company was fantastic); there weren't many other opportunities; -shorter meals, especially lunches -- they often took 2+hours which meant less time for exploring -more suggestions for places to explore during free time -- e.g. Havana Fine Art museum; cemetary, other museums - more information about how ordinary Cubans live and about who gifts are given to!

This is an excellent trip for anyone who wants to learn more about what life in Cuba is like today, and I would highly recommend it. It was just brief glimpses into the music, art, food, history and culture, but provided so much more information and insight than could be gained by just reading about Cuba. Carlos and Hector were wonderful guides, sharing their different experiences and perspectives on life in Cuba. We had informative talks, visits to a senior center, an art program, dance and music performances and some free time to just explore on our own. The accommodations and the food far exceeded my expectations, but made me aware of how privileged we are as tourists there. I never felt unsafe wandering around Havana as a single woman and found people helpful, friendly and welcoming. The Cuban people are resilient, talented, creative and full of beautiful joy, but struggling with few economic resources, little international support and the impact of the ongoing U.S. embargo. I hope that we in the U.S. can influence our government to establish a more open relationship with our Cuban neighbors in the future.

A superb introduction to our close neighbor, Cuba. The lectures by Cuban academics addressed the history and politics that keep our countries separate, and the Cuban people who suffer the consequences of isolation. The daily program connected us with Cubans in various walks of life. We visited a day program for seniors and, across the street, a day program for young adults with Down Syndrome. We played the Cuban version of dominoes with experts, and watched performances of music and dance almost every day. The meals were outstanding and the variety of cocktails with exotic fruit, terrific.

Each of the speakers was truly fascinating, providing a wealth of information. I can't believe how many great experiences were crammed into one week. That said...It's Cuba. Our trip to Cuba was wonderful! Bev was a terrific leader who made sure we all understood the future activities, meeting places and times, and the educational reason we were visiting certain sites. Enedis was such a fun assistant leader and translator! She was very aware of each participant and made sure everyone was involved. When we were taken to the airport at the conclusion of the trip, she stayed with everyone until we headed to customs. That was so helpful for us because she served as the translator as needed! We were very impressed with the provision of the Whisper listening devices. Upon returning we realized that we never heard anyone in the group complain that they couldn't hear the speaker. That is amazing with a senior group! I will definitely be traveling again with Road Scholar!

The program was fantastic. I don't think it could have been improved upon. The hotels also were so much nicer than expected. The one in Havana is modern with large well appointed rooms. The one in Trinidad is historic - built in the 1850s but has modern plumging, air conditioning and plenty of hot water. Aside from 2 dinners in the hotels, the lunches and dinners were amazing. It was the best tour I have every taken and I have toured many countries in Asia, Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

Cuba cannot but inspire. If you value gorgeous landscapes and seascapes, vibrant urban street scenes and restaurants, cutting-edge thinking, dance and music, organic farming with comprehensive ecological understanding, state-of-the-art caretaking (the senior center surpassed anything I've seen for low-income seniors in the US, and the Down Syndrome care equalled or surpassed US attempts), and education in the arts that values each individual's trajectory -- and you'd like to feel and understand these deeply in new ways -- you'll find one week there too short yet so stimulating it's enough to go home with, to let the experiences sink in before returning for more.

I loved every minute of our trip to Cuba, even when I got sick. I thought, "Sure, I'm a little nauseous, but at least I'm in Havana!" To travel with my elderly mother and to be so well cared for by the guides was a joy that I cannot easily express. I am grateful to Road Scholar for providing such an exceptional, life-affirming adventure.

Cuba is a beautiful and progressive city. Our tour guides Jocelyn Langford and Lian Villanueva went above and beyond to let our stay be the best! They were quite knowledgeable and accommodating for everyone's needs. The convertible car rides were awesome! the food and restaurants were 5 Star. The music and dancing was a true representation of the Cuban spirit. The citizens of Cuba were very friendly. I enjoyed the cultural presentations and touring the cities. Our hotels were very comfortable. I am telling my family and friends to visit Cuba with Road Scholar. It is a wonderful and enlightening experience. Well worth the trip. Marilyn Reilly

I loved the choices for instructors and I loved who the Road Scholar chose for us to contribute to. This is a very well organized and impactful trip. I've been on 9 road scholar trips so far and the Cuba was my favorite. I could go on and on telling you why its my favorite.. BUT you should experience it yourself.

This visit to Cuba was unlike any other trip I've taken through Road Scholar or with any other travel company. Our guides, one American and one native Cuban were terrific. The most unusual part of the trip was the up close interaction with people. We met so many artists and performers and regular everyday people, too. And when we patronized their small businesses, it felt like we were actually making a difference in their lives. Visiting Cuba really changes your outlook. You might think you know something about Cuba but visiting changes your perspective. I have never had as many people ask about the details of a trip like I have had with this one, and, as of today, I've been home less than a week!

A trip to Cuban has always been one of the places I have wanted to travel. By supporting the Cuban people on this trip, it made it even more worthwhile. The main impact the trip had on me was the Cuban people. They are so full of life and have so much warm towards others. If you can make it to Cuba in 2020 it's probably well worth the effort. During 2017-2018 there was a relaxation of travel restrictions for US citizens and this led to a huge increase in US tourists, clogging up hotels and other services. By 2019 restrictions were put in place again, but in the long run those restrictions don't make any sense, so at some point soon you'll have the same glut of tourists. This will change Cuba. Hopefully the lives of the Cuban people will improve, but if you want to see one of the last civilized places on Earth with no advertising, almost no cell phones, a vibrant culture and a beautiful people then find your way to Cuba soon!

Priceless insights into the history, culture, geography, and economy of Cuba. Priceless also to learn about the blind-natured and cruel trade-and-supplies embargo/blockade that the US maintains against Cuba: all Americans need to know about this and demand that it be ended. I was also delighted to be in a socialist and gun-free country where the views align so well with my own. It was absolutely wonderful to see the benefits of a compassionate, intelligent socialist system of government and see how Fidel and Che are still beloved there. The many conversations with artists, dancers, musicians, fishermen, and others whom we met were so valuable. All the local guides and teachers were superb. I was filled with admiration for all of them, and especially for Hector, who was with us the entire week and who was ideal in his position in all ways. Bravo, Road Scholar, for enabling this trip!
