The yoga retreat at Montreat Conference Center was an absolutely brilliant week. The buildings, landscape and environment are beautiful and welcoming as this community rebuilds from last year’s hurricanes. Martha Nelson, our yoga teacher is warm, compassionate, extremely knowledgeable and brings joy and peace to each class. I highly recommend Montreat and Yoga with Martha Nelson !

5 Stars for Yoga for Wellness and Daily Living: The 8 Limbs of Yoga. This was my second time to visit the Assembly Inn in Montreat and participate in Road Scholar's outstanding yoga program with Martha Nelson. I definitely recommend this trip if you want to meet lovely folks in a breathtakingly beautiful environment, move and stretch safely, and learn more about yoga philosophy, breathing techniques, and meditation. I also hope to come back to do the intermediate level program after more practice at home.

I had an excellent time with this yoga program and would highly recommend this program for someone who is a casual yoga participant but is looking to get more information about how to incorporate yoga into their daily lives. It covers different styles of yoga along with various mindfulness and breathing techniques which can be easily incorporated in a daily routine of healthy living.

This yoga workshop was well-organized, educational and fun. I would recommend The 8 Limbs of Yoga for anyone who wants to learn more about the history and philosophy of yoga even if you have never taken a yoga class. The instructor expertly made sure everyone felt included and comfortable in the group. The Assembly Inn is an historic building and the accommodations were comfortable. Tasty meals are served buffet style with vegetarian options. This trip exceeded my expectations and I plan to register for the intermediate yoga retreat next year.

Martha was an excellent yoga instructor. I really enjoyed our classes and I will try to practice meditation and breathing exercises especially plus I am starting out my day with some stretching exercises. I also liked the Montreat Retreat Center and Tracy Bailey was a very helpful and supportive person. I enjoyed Sourwood Ridge on Monday night and I also appreciated the presentation on Appalachian culture with the mandolin. I was glad we got to dance a little as it made everyone smile and laugh.

If you're looking for a break from your normal routine, or if you're looking for enhancing your yoga practice, if you want to visit and stay in a wonderfully peaceful and beautiful place, and if you're searching for like minded folks looking toward self improvement then this program is for you!! The yoga sessions are excellent, not too strenuous as all are encouraged to monitor their own levels of ability and comfort. This session included two wonderful evening experiences to celebrate the holiday season!! One evening we went to the Biltmore Estate for wine tasting, a delicious dinner, and time to tour the mansion!! Magnificent!! Another evening we went to the NC Arboretum with time to stroll the beautifully decorated paths, a wonderful evening and nature added to the event with a full moon!!! One evening we were beautifully entertained by Anne Lough as she played different dulecimers, singing traditional songs. I happily give this experience FIVE STARS!!!!!!!!

Wow, wow, wow! This program exceeded my expectations on all levels. The setting was gorgeous, and perfect for a yoga retreat--a hotel would have been odd. The food was okay--step up from a college dorm--but plenty of choices and the staff were warm and accommodating. Martha is an amazing yoga instructor and I learned more intellectually and physically than I had hoped. Have already ordered a few pieces of equipment for my soon-to-be regular home practice--and will be looking for an appropriate local class. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this program for anyone wishing to start, boost, or restart their yoga practice.

This program is simply wonderful. I did not realize how the yoga teachings would help MY mind and body. Of course, Martha, the teacher, was instrumental in this realization - she is the best. It is my opinion that everyone entering or already in senior life would benefit from this program.

A very comfortable room and a professional team, both our leader & hostess, could not have made this time together any nicer. Met so many kind, gentle people with so many similar interests. This was the time "best-spent" I've enjoyed in a while. For all that, and more, I am grateful.

Never having done yoga, didn’t know what to expect, absolutely loved the program! Martha is a great teacher and communicator, for every movement and practice taught, she gave alternative ways to execute based on our experience and physical limitations. She made it really fun and facilitated in making connections with fellow participants. Great experience, lifelong memories, highly recommend!

It was a well-planned, perfectly executed combination of both the theory and application of Yoga. The philosophical history and major, foundational concepts were presented in an easily understood and practical manner. The asanas (positions) were taught with such a variety of options that they were accessible to every person in the class - regardless of age or level of fitness. It was also great fun, in a beautiful location. What more could you ask ?

If you're a no-frills needed sort of person who enjoys gorgeous green settings, fascinating historical stone architecture, simple food, and solid yoga instruction for experienced beginners or intermediate practitioners, and are open to spending a relaxed time with kindred spirits, you should try this. Seriously. You'll likely meet repeat attenders, and maybe even become one yourself.

This is a wonderful yoga program in a beautiful area. You can really improve your knowledge of yoga and your yoga ability in this class. It is also a lot cooler temperature wise than many places in the US during the summer. The rooms are clean and quite. The food is served as a buffet and they really have a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. They try hard to meet the needs of people with special diets.

I found that the intermediate yoga program provided an indepth study of yoga that goes beyond the physical poses. I appreciated learning about the ancient traditions and I liked how our instructor Martha incorporated different meditational practices in our class. I would highly recommend this class to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of yoga. The mountain setting at Montreat was perfect for yoga. The buffet style meals are good and had a nice variety. The accommodations are simple and clean. WI-FI was out for a few days during my stay, but that didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the week. In fact, it helped to disconnect from the outside world for awhile. Since it is a small group class, it was easy to make friends with the other participants. It was a very enriching experience and I look forward to attending another yoga class at Montreat.

This was my 8th RS trip. As a beginner yogi, I was immediately encouraged by Martha, our instructor, that I will do fine, and I did. I was surrounded by novices as well as experienced yogis and I didn't feel once intimidated. Could I keep up with the poses as well as others? No, but I tried. I met some very nice people from all over the U.S. The Montreat Center is very special. It was a lovely place, surrounded by old trees and a lovely lake. Nearby is Black Mountain, a sweet little town with a nice "downtown" and cute shops. It's a great place for hikes and leisurely walks. We even had entertainment. The food was buffet style and very appealing and salad and vegetarian was offered as well. Often, I took my meals on the porch outside the dining hall just for some quiet time alone. So glad I took this RS trip.

The 8 Limbs of Yoga is a wonderful dip into a world of meditation, yoga postures and breathing techniques that taught me how to remain calm and center myself. Martha Nelson is one of the best teachers to walk us through getting g to the core. In the beautiful mountains of Montreat NC, there's plenty of movement to compliment the yoga and meditation.

I just got back from an April trip to Montreat. It was among the very best of my RS trips so far. Our leader, Martha, was simply wonderful. I never felt out of place even though some severe arthritis had me using a chair to get up and down, etc., and making other modifications. Modifications are welcome with this group -- There is room for EVERY BODY in Martha's world. She sets a tone of such inclusivity and knowledge. Our fellow travelers were wonderful, too. I think we all bonded so well since most of the group were traveling solo, and therefore, especially amenable to reaching out, etc. The Montreat location is just gorgeous, and I loved the stone+glass of the Conference Center. I'd love to go back. This trip is great. -- Cathaleen

The yoga retreat setting in Montreat N.C could not have been better. Staying in the Historical Inn overlooking the lake, with lots of trails to explore, made for a peaceful and rejuvenating experience. Martha, the yoga teacher adapted the yoga to any level, so everyone benefited. I have been practicing yoga for 4 years, but found I was not doing some of the poses correctly. I was glad to have the small group and attention to correct and elevate my yoga practice. The morning session included yoga and meditation, while afternoon sessions were more restorative yoga. The evening programs were also a highlight, including music from local folk/bluegrass musicians, who explained the history of the Appalachian music. Another night, there was an engaging storyteller. The pace and entire program was perfect. I already signed up for level 2 of the yoga retreat!

Yoga program: I highly recommend this program whether new to yoga or have been doing it for years. “Marvelous” Martha, our wonderful instructor, had something for everyone with morning stretches, spiritual reflection and introspection, work on strength and flexibility, ending the day with a restorative practice that left me energized and at peace. A retreat for body and mind, thank you Martha! Accommodations: the Assembly Inn is a beautiful historic inn located in the charming town of Montreat, NC. It is surrounded by mountains, trees, and overlooks a small lake fed by a bold creek that you can see throughout the property. The room was comfortable, the food was simple, plentiful with some stand-out dishes. Our Inn hostess and staff took care of all the details, thank you Tracy!
