Charged with the task of finding a water route across North America, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out on their historic expedition in 1804. On land by private motorcoach and on the river by 221-passenger riverboat, the American Empress, voyage from Montana through Idaho to Washington and Oregon, learning about important expedition sites. Enriching lectures with a Road Scholar study leader provide an in-depth perspective of this monumental expedition.

After retiring from a 33-year career as a radio DJ, Roger began as a Group Leader with Road Scholar’s Portland office in 2010. Born in Idaho, he’s lived in Washington, Montana and California before settling in Corvallis, Oregon in 1998. Roger has a BA in communication and became a Certified Tour Director in 2010 after attending the International Tour Management Institute in San Francisco. His affinity for travel and knowledge of the Pacific Northwest has made him a Road Scholar favorite.

Shannon Harmon View biography
Over the course of Shannon Harmon’s distinguished career, she worked as a guide, interpreter and supervisor in California State Parks for 40 years as well as a Ranger Interpreter with the Bureau of Land Management and a California high school teacher. She has been a Lewis and Clark enthusiast since high school, and is thrilled to have been working the Lewis and Clark tours with Road Scholar since 2011. She plays the hammered dulcimer and enjoys singing, drawing, painting, photography, sewing and traveling.

Mary Ellen Ergle View biography
Since the 2003 Lewis and Clark bicentennial, Mary Ellen traveled the country as a park ranger, Road Scholar leader, and avid “Lewis and Clark-ie.” She has even examined the original Lewis and Clark plant collections in Philadelphia and London. She believes this historic adventure story is still relevant and exciting. Mary Ellen’s travels have included hiking the Grand Canyon, hiking and kayaking in Alaska and Florida and paddling a dugout on the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers and a Chinook canoe on the Columbia.

Richard Sola View biography
Richard is a Washington native who has spent decades exploring the land and history of the Inland Northwest—the vast and varied region east of the Cascade Mountains and west of the Rockies. Since retiring from Eastern Washington University, Richard has been a study leader for Lewis and Clark programs as well as programs focused on the Great Ice Age Floods that swept through the region 15,000 years ago. Richard frequently lectures throughout the region. He is also an instructor at Spokane Community College.
