5 Stars! New Year's in Sorrento was a great trip! Alessandra, our trip leader, was outstanding, as was the hotel & staff, & the city of Sorrento. Outings & lectures were varied & informative. We had enough free time to explore Sorrento on our own or to rest up for the next adventure. Food was too plentiful but I guess that's part of why you go to Italy. A good group too. I'd highly recommend New Year's in Sorrento!

Great time of the year to experience Italy. Crowds were much smaller and the weather cooperated most of the time. Wonderful to travel back in this reach history of the world

New Year's in Sorrento: Excellent first experience with Road Scholar. The Road Scholar organization in Italy was perfect, including hotel check-in, meals (Amazing New Year's Eve Dinner!), lectures and activities. My flights were on my own, so I can't comment on that aspect of the tour. )
Our learned, enthusiastic and kind instructor's historical and current local knowledge was beyond expectation.
A good mix of group time, and some time to roam alone. When the single travel glitch (Ravello road closure/ longer bus re-route) occurred, an alternate activity was quickly put in place, and good natured guides (and driver Luigi!) put us back on track with a minimum of disruption, and a maximum of composure and accommodation.
One highlight: A trip across calm waters to Capri on a sunny day, especially the Giardini di Augusto after a delicious meal.
Another highlight: New Year's Eve Dinner at Hotel Michelangelo, which began at 7 pm with complimentary champagne, and progressed with music and song for everyone in the hotel and everyone connected to the hotel, through too many courses of amazing food to count, and ending with Fireworks at midnight, the likes of which had not been seen before, and a traditional good luck meal of beans and ham (which I was too tired and full to eat at 1 am....)
As to the group composition and dynamic, which is something that cannot be planned, we were tremendously fortunate. A mix of family, couples, singles. Interesting, fun, funny, adventurous, kind, companionable folks. It seems new friendships really can spring up in the excitement and delight of sharing new experiences in unfamiliar surroundings.
The hotel was very festive, and comfortable, with a professional but friendly staff, and good food for the meals that were served as part of the tour.
Suggestion: If your budget allows, stay an extra day in Sorrento. It's lovely.
Oh, and in Sorrento, quite near the Hotel Michelangelo, Pizzaria da Franco.

What a joy to celebrate New Year's in Sorrento! My husband Gerald and I did an Elderhostel there for the holidays in 1997 and were pleased to see that Jan and Claudio were still part of the program. Jan led us on delightful walks through Sorrento, and Claudio gave us his usual great tour of Pompeii. Our leader, Barbara, did a wonderful job, too. We stayed at the same hotel where we were housed in 1997, and with its central location and fine dining it was a delight. Gerald and I enjoyed returning to Capri, Herculaneum, and the Amalfi Coast -- all "must see" places. And the presepe vivente (living Nativity) is not to be missed! If you are looking for a place to ring in 2020, consider Sorrento (you will be amazed at the New Year's Eve celebration!), one of the loveliest towns in Italy and a base for exploring one of this country's most fascinating areas. Incidentally, this was our 11th Road Scholar in Italy.
