We went to Cuba just before tours were suspended for logistical reasons. We are incredibly lucky to have had the chance to visit. Amazing people surviving terrible conditions with grace and good humor. Go!

I left Cuba in awe of the Cuban people, who, in spite of years of challenges and shortages of basic goods and services, are exuberant, warm, and friendly. Their art and music are world class, and I feel privileged to have experienced their creativity first hand. This was an amazing trip.

We were the last group to be on the "The Best of Cuba: From Vinales Valley to Habana Vieja", Season 2026. We felt very safe and welcomed in each community we visited. Add this to your bucket list. Our Road Scholar host, Carlos, was a great guide and now a friend. I hope they reinstate the program soon. Greg Sparks, California

Wow! Best of Cuba trip is a Must-Do! It far exceeded my expectations, and was most enlightening and even life-changing. Trip leader Jim Fitch and local guide Jose Luis (a gifted teacher), also motor-coach driver Vladimir, made each day an enriching, immersive experience, while fostering a bond among the participants. It was the perfect trip to gain understanding of the people and culture, beyond government politics. The raw honesty, warmth, humor and grace of the Cuban people was captivating. They were some of the most welcoming and friendly people, of every stripe, I’ve ever met. The stay at a Casa Particular in Viñales was a highlight. The Music, Art, Architecture and Food was sublime. And the illuminating lectures were excellent. I can’t say enough about it and I can’t imagine a better experience.

Cuba is a country not to be missed. Road Scholar is the foremost conduit for a visit as the programs are informative without being overly so. The tour directors are carefully chosen and demonstrate a wonderful sense of humor coupled with a great knowledge of the country, its history and people.

We had the most incredible experience!!! Both tour guides were absolutely amazing!! Jose A. Was impressively organized and exceptionally thoughtful and planned so well. Jose L. Was absolutely brilliant!!! His internal encyclopedia of Cuban knowledge was beyond impressive!! He shared tons of fascinating information with us. We couldn’t believe how much knowledge, data and fun facts he had!! We absolutely loved them both and they worked so well as a team to give us such a beautiful, comprehensive experience!! It was so much better than we could have expected and we are returning home with a whole new awareness of Cuban culture and their struggle. We would definitely recommend this trip!! We love that Jose A. Shared not only recipes of the meals/ drinks we enjoyed, but he gave us tour information for Miami afterward as well! He went way out of his way for us!!

This program was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. It was not a “tour,” it was real human connection. We met artists, musicians, farmers, students, and community leaders who welcomed us, spoke honestly, and shared their lives with pride and warmth. We heard stories, asked questions, and were treated like guests, not tourists. The guides and instructors were outstanding. They were knowledgeable, organized, and deeply respectful of the people and places we visited. Every stop had a purpose. We learned about history, culture, daily life, struggle, creativity, and resilience in a way you simply cannot get from TV or books. Be prepared to step outside your comfort zone. You will see both beauty and hardship. You may experience power outages or limited water. But you will also experience music in the street, art made from almost nothing, humor in the face of challenge, and a sense of community that is unforgettable. I came home with a different understanding of the world, a deep respect for the people we met, and a feeling that I had experienced something true. I would recommend this program without hesitation.

There is only one word to describe this trip- OUTSTANDING! Betty, Jose-luis and Rafael were our three Muskateers. They navigated us through the physical terrain, history, culture, religion and a whole lot more. Combine that with the mesmerising waters surrounding the island and be prepared to get enlightened, meet new and interesting people (and gain weight!) You know it's been a great trip when at the end you don't want to leave!

Wonderful itinerary filled with diverse activities: music, classical and Cuban, art, sculpture, wood sculpting, visits to artists studios, excellent restaurant and good food selection, wonderful and knowledgeable guidesl. Cobblestones in Old Havana can be tricky to navigate , but should not be a deterrent.

Every American should visit Cuba! Apart from being deeply connected to who we are and were as a country, the architecture, the scenery, the vibrancy of the arts, the warmth of the people, and the intensity of the stories they have to tell make a trip to this country seem mandatory. I learned so much that I didn't know and had so many preconceptions shattered.

My husband and I just returned from a life changing experience, traveling in Cuba, on the Best of Cuba Road Scholar tour. The program was excellent, along with our tour director, local guides and speakers. We learned so much about this country’s history, up until current day. The Cuban people have proven to be resilient through many hardships. They are very friendly and we felt very safe throughout the whole country. Other than bringing in tourist dollars, which they desperately need, we wish we could do more for them.

This trip was my first with Road Scholar. I thought both tour guides, Betty and Jose in Cuba were amazing. Very professional and experts in their fields. Betty made the whole trip look seamless and easy, while I am quite sure she was working hard behind the scenes. Jose was able to answer all questions with knowledgeable answers and had so much information to impart. My only complaint was the hotel in Matanzas- it was dirty and the furniture was stained. The sheets had holes and the bed was uncomfortable. However, the staff was friendly and tried to be accommodating.

We are always working with our vendors in Cuba to improve quality with the resources available there and have shared your comments with them. We hope to welcome you on another adventure in the future! Sincerely, Road Scholar

What an eye-opening experience in Cuba! This trip takes you to several areas of Cuba and some world heritage sites. Art is central to Cuban culture and that was woven throughout our program - dance, music, art, handicrafts. What lovely, resourceful people and a country that is struggling amid the USA economic embargo.

This was one of my favorite Road Scholar programs. The itinerary provided a wonderful mix of urban Cuba (Havana) along with interesting smaller cities and towns where we could see the real Cuba and meet many interesting local people from different parts of the country. Jim Fitch, our group leader, did an amazing job guiding our group, managing logistics, and introducing us to the Cuban people in a meaningful way. Hector Gonzales, our Cuban guide, was with the group the entire trip teaching us about his country. You could really feel the Cuban spirit in Hector. He brought to life Cuba's history and, the culture, and its people. I think this is a “must do” trip if you love new cultural experiences, and want to learn about our neighbors to the south!

Our trip to Cuba was an enriching experience led by Jim Fitch. His deep knowledge of Cuba and love for the people added depth to each destination. His jokes were an added bonus. Hector, our Cuban guide, and Jorge, our bus driver, provided perspectives on Cuban history, culture, and the hopes for its future. Expecting a more rigid communist structure, we were enlightened by conversations with Camilo and Marta, who explained Cuba’s socialist system, the role of privatized businesses in everyday life, and the women of Cuba. Beyond its fascinating history and people, Cuba itself is beautiful with mountains, pristine beaches, and vibrant cities. We were fortunate to travel with a group of well-traveled individuals who enriched the experience even further with their insights, questions, and welcoming friendships. And, as a bonus, dominoes is currently a game of choice after learning the Cuban way to play, and the recipe for canchanceras is waiting to be tasted. Don’t hesitate to sign up for this trip!

If you are interested in learning and seeing and dancing with the Cuban people and experiencing their culture ,than this is the program for you. The beautiful cities, the country sides, farms, tobacco fields, beaches, magotes and lime caverns and rivers and old restored cars are an added bonus. Taste some dark rum, some hot coffee and some flan.

We covered a lot of territory in this program and were introduced to the best of Cuba. Roadscholar planned this program extremely well in a challenging location (shortly after the power problems started) and we stayed busy with lots of cultural activities that we would not have otherwise known about if we had planned this trip independently. Because of the distances covered between places, we did spend quite a bit of time on the motorcoach, though the time passed quickly with the onboard lectures and outside scenery. Meals in paladars were tasty, bus driver was excellent, program and local leads were awesome. Would have liked to have more free time to independently explore most places, but the fact of the matter is that this trip was an unforgettable experience.

This was my first road scholar trip and hopefully it won’t be my last. Everything was great and well organized. The itinerary was well structured and we had enjoyable and informative experiences and lectures. The tour took us to 3 destinations in addition to Havana which was essential for getting the full Cuba experience. Cuba and Cubans face many challenges and as a tourist you have to be flexible about water , electricity and an outdated infrastructure. However, the tour exceeded all my expectations and I felt both very safe and well taken care of. There was a focus on the arts as this is an important aspect of Cuban culture including paintings, sculptures, music and dance. The people were the best part of the tour, the locals , road scholar staff and my fellow travelers. Cubans are very resilient and creative. They were always optimistic and happy. Our tour guide Jose Armando, the local guide Guillermo and our driver Herman were all outstanding. My fellow travelers were amazing : friendly , flexible and inspiring. I had a great time and very happy I went on this trip.

We had a fabulous trip. We learned so much and enjoyed everyone in our group. I loved our Road scholar guide, Carlos, who really bent over backwards to keep everything organized and informative. He had a great sense of humor which we needed at times. Go to Cuba. Listen to great music, see dancers and learn about our shared history. The one to one opportunities on this trip are very moving. One early morning our bus driver, Thomas, was cleaning our bus, inside and out, before most of us were awake. They really do make the trip as comfortable as they can.

Had a very enjoyable time, even if there was a blackout going on. The group of people I was with are all wonderful, a lot of retired teachers asking good questions, doctor and his wife and I myself a farmer. The biggest highlights of my trip was seeing a Masonic emblem on the canopy of a building. I took a picture of it and showed the bus the picture. He lit up like a Christmas tree and said we brother we brother gave me a big hug and the secret handshake. He showed me pictures of his family and was sonic paraphernalia in their home was fun to make such a great connection, I’m going to try and keep up our relationship,

This was a bucket list trip, I have always wanted to go to Cuba. I packed carefully, taking nothing I expected to return home with... at each stop, I left part of what I had with me. I filled up my suitcase with local made treasures. Best decision ever. The people were amazing. I felt safe the entire trip. It was a five star dining experience (which I did NOT expect). There are definitely cultural differences, they have infrastructure that was frozen in time. I highly recommend this trip for anyone interested in understanding the Cuban/American political climate. Keep your mind open to both sides. As a resident of South Florida, I definitely listen to American politics differently than before this trip. Oh and did I mention the scenery is spectacular! Beaches, mountains, farms still using oxen, cityscapes and yes, the old cars still run. But the people were the best... even though we both spoke few words of the other person's language, I will always remember the animated conversation with a young dancer and see the happiness on her face.

If you have ever wanted to visit Cuba, this is a fine choice.Cuba has weathered so many hardships and setbacks in their road to independence and yet the people remain resilient and joyful. Their art, music, and dance reflect the soul of the nation and Road Scholar puts you in contact with them, one-on-one to understand their life on their terms. With RS, you are a participant, not simply an observer and that is the true value of this program.

Shirley – Class of 2022 | Pittsburgh, PA
The Havana hotel was first class and the restaurant choices ample and of good quality. That was less true in other places. I was especially displeased with the Hotel Rio San Juan in Mantanzas where my room was on the 2nd floor. I had difficulty on the stairs as the hand rail only went from the 1st floor to the landing half way up. I had to hold on to the wall for support the rest of the way. My shower leaked so there was a lot of water on the floor after each use. On the last day, the plumbing actually came apart while I was showering resulting in water shooting directly out of the wall at my mid-section leaving the plumbing to the shower head useless. All of this was made worse by the slippery tile floor in the bathroom and shower and the lack of a grab bar or anything to hold on to for support while on that slippery floor. Slippery tile floors and the lack of grab bars was also true of all the other hotels as well, even in Havana. However, although the Air B&B in Vinales also had tile floors in the bathroom and shower, they at least had a small mat on the shower floor to reduce the risk of slipping on the wet floor. The printed material sent in advance was very helpful; I read and re-read every word. The guides on the tour, Jim Fitch and Jose Luis Sande, were excellent. My only issue was the lack of detail of each day’s agenda. I understand that the materials sent in advance had to be somewhat general as the situation on the ground determines the actual venues to tour on any given day. However, one day Jim hand-wrote the agenda for that day and distributed it electronically. So why can’t that be done every day? My issue is that I don’t know the names of the places we visited or of the artists whose works we saw. The names were announced out loud as we were visiting each site but were not printed anywhere. As I look at my photos of a great artist whose studio we visited, I have no idea of that artist's name. Knowing only the name of the city is not enough.

This was a fascinating tour. Well-paced, with lots of variety and a good balance of planned activities and free time, it leaves the traveler with more questions than answers, in a good way. We learned much and have more yet to learn about Cuba! Our tour leader, the hardworking Betty van der Kaaj, has the perfect personality for her job, remaining calm and gracious whenever challenges arose. In addition, we found her to be knowledgeable and a clear communicator. Even more importantly, her personal connection to the Cuban people we visited greatly enhanced our experience. Our Cuban guide, Alejandro Anido was very knowledgeable and led us with skill. He was occasionally difficult to understand, as when speaking over a person for whom he was translating, but we very much appreciated his sharing of personal experiences and perspectives to shed light on the problems facing Cuba today. Our bus driver, Etienne, was excellent. He was very professional and became an important and much-appreciated member of our group. Some participants in our group presented special challenges for Betty, Alejandro, and Etienne, but the team handled those situations with utmost professionalism and grace. All of the accommodations and meal venues were well-chosen for our group. The pre-trip information would have benefitted from a thorough review both by the tour leader and by an editor. There were a number of content and copy-and-paste errors that made for confusing reading. As for the recommendations for carrying U.S. cash, the total amount recommended was appropriate, but we would have benefitted from knowing that each participant needs some 30-50 one-dollar bills, many 5s and 10s for souvenir shopping, and larger bills only for the meals not included and in case of emergency. Overall, we felt well-prepared for the trip and enjoyed it tremendously.

The Best of Cuba: From Viñales Valley to Habana Vieja, presents a unique experience. From the decaying elegance of old Havana to the horse-drawn economy of the rural towns, Cuba presents an example of how people can be friendly and happy in spite of a shortage in the material and electronic "necessities" we have become so used to. Roads Scholar kept us in comfort while giving us a window into the lives of the Cuban people (with occasional doorways to join with them in music, dance and conversation). Our trip leader, Carole, was masterful in both meeting the individual needs of the group members and demonstrating true friendship with the Cuban people at every one of our visited venues.

This was one of our best Road Scholar trips. Our guides, Betty, Hector and Wilmer, were fantastic. It was wonderful to see how the Cubans have adapted to all their tribulations with lack of just about everything, but the art was so wonderful, the places we visited so wonderful and the food they fed us was very good. It was sad to see that the Cubans didn't eat quite so well. Anyway, that said, it was a great trip!

The Cuba program was definitely a learning experience. I would recommend it, However, remember that you are going to Cuba, a depressed socialist country. If this is your first Road Scholar program, know that your following programs will certainly have better food and accommodations. If this is one of many RS programs, as with me, set your expectations lower and you will avoid disillusionment. Once again, this was a trip worth taking to understand life under socialism. It may well change your view of the world.

A truly eye-opening experience to see such a “foreign” country so near to our own borders. To realize that Cuba is a great experiment which, if allowed to flourish, could teach us all about other possibilities and ways of being..ie, a more socially even society where there is little evidence of the “haves” and “have-nots.

We had been wanting to visit Cuba since before the pandemic, and it was worth the wait. Go now! Road Scholar does it right! Superb guides Carole Cloonan and Elias Valor - kept things organized and taught us a lot. Sure, you will find toilets without seats (or TP), but it's not a big deal. Internet is a challenge, but you deal with it. The Cuban people are warm and friendly, and you have enough time to interact with many of them. The activities are varied, and you learn something new every single day. The food is okay, and I didn't lose weight even though there were some meals that didn't particularly appeal to me. We kept a blog that chronicles our trip, and anyone can read it: MytripjournalDOTcomSLASH Lois_and_John_Cuba

I did not get to see Cuba at all due to the spread of Covid by other passengers. Based on the fact that previous Cuba trips had multiple participants with Covid, Road Scholar should have required all to mask when inside buildings and on the tour bus. To quarantine people without active symptoms for the duration of the trip was outrageous! The hotel in Havanna that was used for quarantine was not prepared for meal room service and I had stale bread and butter for most of the days! After the group saw the quarantine requirement, others with symptoms just laid low and did NOT test! I would like RS to consider a refund of the cost of this wasted trip in the way of a credit toward a future trip. This was my 4th RS trip and I have another scheduled in May. Depending on how RS handles this will determine my willingness to continue traveling with this company.

This 12 day program to Cuba more than surpassed my (always very high) expectations of a Road Scholar trip. I not only came home with a much better understanding of Cuba and how our US policy affects Cuban society, but also a sense of how many challenges the people of Cuba handle with dignity while maintaining pride in their culture. If you want an insight into today’s Cuba and our connection to it, then this is the trip you want to take. Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Matanzas, and Vinales are all beautiful, historic, and amazing places to visit. The time spent in the Viñales countryside and our Casa Particular there was my personal favorite, a perfect respite from the busy cities on the rest of the trip. Our US tour leader Carole was unflappable and so kind, and our incredible Cuban tour guide Elias was extraordinarily knowledgeable, funny, and just delightful to be around, even while answering all of our many questions! The two Cuban lecturers’ presentations on women in Cuban society and the Cuban constitution and private enterprise in Cuba today gave us perspectives that were honest and sincere in their evaluation of the problems and solutions facing the country and the people. Cuba has changed a lot since the 1960’s and a visit there has changed my perception about it too.

I came home with a joyful heart. This program allowed me to do what I love to do most; that is engage with every-day people in another country. It was thrilling to engage with artists, dancers, musicians, and even hotel chambermaids and bartenders to understand how they live. While some of the days on the bus were long it was also opportunity to see the beautiful landscape. It was good to have been in several places ranging from the city to rural areas. I came home with a much better understanding of Cuba and how US policy affects their lives. I am left wondering how after 60 years and six administrations we have not yet come to a better way of being kind and supportive to our next door neighbors who are indeed suffering. If you want to get a better understanding of Cuba and our relationship with it, then this is the program for you.

I recently completed a 11 day Road Scholar program in Cuba. The experience was nearly life altering, maybe a bit old for that, but still energized me to realize again and again that underdeveloped and developing countries are experiencing continued and maybe worsening hard times, and to see a country being made to suffer for political reasons is unacceptable and undemocratic. It is time the US removes all restrictions on trade and travel and life will be better. 60 years of stubbornness is silliness. Paul van zuiden

This is a perfect trip. I learned so much and I’m still processing all the information I received. Our US guide Cheryl Sennet, our Cuban guide Vivian Quintero, and our bus driver Heriberto were excellent and over the top. They are very approachable, super friendly, fun, knowledgeable, and ran the trip smoothly without a single glitch. Cuba is an amazing country. While the people of Cuba face many challenges, they are some of the friendliest people I have ever met. The arts, history, scenery, culture and cuisine of Cuba are amazing. Havana, Trinidad, Matanzas, and Vinales are beautiful. It was nice to stay in a variety of hotels and private accommodations. I enjoyed the opportunities to speak Spanish. Every day my Spanish improved. It was fun for me to interact with the Cuban people in Spanish and for them to interact with me in English. Learning experiences for all. Cuba is a MUST SEE. Wonderful culturally rich trip with a great leader (Michelle) and Cuban guide (Karina), as well as a fun group of participants. We learned so much about the Cuban people and their lives. Most hotels were fine to very good, although the one in Trinidad was way too "rustic" for me. The food was fine and plentiful with great coffee. If you have stomach issues, however, think twice about Cuba; 5-6 people that I am aware of in our group had varying degrees of problems despite constant hand washing, sanitizing, and food/drink vigilance. The trip was a truly learning experience. People there were poor but happy and healthy. Many nice buildings were desperately needed repaired. Consumer goods were very, very scarce due to U.S. embargo. Many family own homes were converted to hotels and restaurants and doing very good and getting rich. At the same time, most of the people till live in poverty. Our tour leader did a great job. Most but not all the local guides were great. Hotels and food were o.k. I was very disappointed with three things. 1. The time of returning to Miami was never made clear. I ended up booked a flight back home in early evening such that I had to waited for over seven hours at the Miami airport. This had never happened when I traveled with other tour companies. 2. Rotation in seating was voluntary but did not worked out as expected. 3. Many travelers were sick and several of them were coughing openly on the bus regularly without covering up themselves. I ended up sick when I got back home. Overall it was a great learning and discovering trip.

Our arts and culture tour of Cuba was outstanding for its content and logistically seamless (as much as is possible there). We learned so much about the arts, the economy, politics, and daily life in Cuba — more than we ever could have learned traveling on our own, without a personal connection to a Cuban. And we felt welcomed, certainly for our contributions to their struggling economy, but also because they are genuinely friendly people who love to share their culture with us. This was our first Road Scholar experience, and I’d highly recommend this trip.

Our group leader, Jim Fitch, in-country “instructor”, Elias Valor, and bus driver, Gil, were all excellent. We learned a great deal from them and they did all that was needed to make the trip comfortable and safe. The accommodations were all excellent; probably the DoubleTree in Miami, in terms of lodging and food, were the least desirable. The pace and choice of activities were very good. We understand that limitations under “travel in support of the people of Cuba” may have restricted us somewhat but we feel that meeting artists, farmers, cultural performers and some businesspeople was excellent. The visits to homes were high points and there could be more visits to typical homes such as Ernesto and Jamie in Remedios and the paladar in a home in Remedios. We would recommend this trip to others without reservation.

The guides are wonderful and very knowledgeable. On our January trip, the weather ranged from mild to cool, no problem with insects, and the accommodations were comfortable. The food is ample (although not gourmet) and the drinks, including coffee, are superb.

Our trip to Cuba was our second Road Scholar trip. It exceeded our expectations. The activities took us "behind the scenes" in every instance, from private tours of a museum, dancers at practice, active artists, a working farm, and many similar activities.

This trip was truly a wonderful experience. Our guides, Marissa and Elias, were absolutely wonderful! They were both very knowledgeable, organized, patient, kind, and lots of fun! I will always remember dancing and laughing with Marissa and Elias in beautiful Cuba! Our bus driver, Rolando, was also wonderful and kept us safe and comfortable. I enjoyed meeting new people, listening to wonderful music, trying some different food, and learning about the skills and creativity of the Cuban people. I will always cherish the memories of our trip to Cuba. Thanks to the Road Scholar team for making this dream a reality for us!

The Best of Cuba: People, Life & Culture. This was a great trip: informative, fun and an opportunity I would have never otherwise had. (It's illegal to visit Cuba as an individual.) We traveled several of the great cities of Cuba: Camaguey, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Remedios, Havana & others. All were beautiful, photogenic, and interesting in their own ways. As always, the leaders were great! They helped us to meet all kinds of Cuban people, to see their art & culture, and to participate in many of these. Perhaps the thing I enjoyed most was my fellow travelers. As with every RoadScholar trip I have participated in (this was my 4th RoadScholar trip), I found them to be fun loving, adventurous, well informed and to have a good sense of humor!

Road Scholar's Cuba program brings intellectually motivated tourists together and immerses them in the Cuban culture. You get an appreciation of how they have approached institutional problems in a unique way which has enabled them to maintain their dignity under very adverse conditions imposed on them

I was thrilled and humbled to be a part of The Best of Cuba: People, Life and Culture: Camaguey to Havana! I felt safe in a state-run country and embraced the welcome of its people wherever we went. I also enhanced my knowledge of the rich heritage of this country so close to the US.

The People-to=People tour of Cuba was excellent. We got a much clearer picture of how Cuba works, how the people live, and we had interesting conversations with 'real Cubans', as well as wonderful cultural experiences including visits to artists, dance companies and singers.

Considering the hardship conditions of some areas, the trip was an educational experience. My complaint was the one night stay outside of Trinidad, in the rustic cabins. The food was awful, the rooms were, rustic, yes. But, we really didn't need to stay in such an out of the way location. Not a learning experience. Loved our guide, Jim. Loved the surprise taxi ride in Havana, the pedicabs in Remedios, the trip to Hemingway's estate in Havana, and the best meal was the farm field trip with roasted pig. Food was fresh, colorful and delish. Can't say that for most of the meals, but under the circumstances, I understand. Glad I went. Once was enough for me.

My recent trip, The Best of Cuba: People, Life and Culture: Camaquey to Havana was everything and more than what I could conceive or expect. The group leader and guides were outstanding and the people whom we met in our People to People contacts were exceptionally warm, welcoming and forthcoming. My fellow travelers were interesting and eager to experience all the trip offered. I am very glad that I have gained a much better understanding of Cuba and the desire to urge our public officials to re-open diplomatic and trade relations which were once very close. Thank you Roadscholar for this wonderful cultural and travel opportunity. Joanne Canary

I loved that this tour allowed us to see a variety of cities and areas of the country, because the smaller cities are much different than Havana. The people to people experiences introduced us to interesting people who are passionate about what they do. All the arrangements for the tour were handled flawlessly and we learned so much about life in Cuba today.

This program focuses on learning about the Cuban people, their culture and economy. We loved it and learned a lot. While there was a lot of beauty, history and art to see and experience, it was more about Cuban culture and society, and it was learning about those intangibles that I will remember the most.

Before this trip, Cuba was a somewhat mysterious country to me. I believe I was expecting to see a cold-war type of police state. Instead, we saw how much Cubans enjoy music, Internet, cell phones, and families, just like we do. Cuba is a poor country, but the people are wonderful and strive to improve their lives.

A truly educational experience in a country that is often heard about in the US, usually from a politcally standpoint. It was enlightening to hear directly from the locals in Cuba itself the other side of the story and how they really live under a somewhat different form of government. It makas one reflect on the pros and cons of both system.

My group tour of Cuba was fantastic! We spent time in small towns and drove through rural countryside, ending in the beautiful city of Havana, and met many very creative and interesting locals, and left with a broader view of the cultural and political situation in this fascinating country. I was pleased to discover that the citizens are typically happy to have Americans visit and are proud of their culture. But be vigilant about hand washing or sanitizing, and do not ever trust the tap water wherever you stay or eat in Cuba. I, along with about five others in my tour group ended up with some degree of stomach trouble, not knowing how or where we acquired the bug. According to the ER doctor I saw a week after returning to the states, a good rule of thumb when traveling anywhere in the Caribbean is “boil it, peel it, cook it, wash it or forget it!” (But only “wash it” with bottled water.)
