I think this was an ideal time of year to see the Amazon - the water was high enough that we could follow some tributaries by skiff (called canoe by the staff) into the jungle. We had a guide, Sol, who could smell snakes - so we knew to pause and look, and he could climb trees to prod a tarantula out of it's nest for our viewing pleasure. He could name a bird as it flew over in silhouette against the sky. I recommend, if you are, like me, accustomed to an 68F house, the Duluth Trading Co. "Made-in-the-Jade fabric technology feels cool to the touch Resists odor and wicks away moisture to keep you feeling dry" if you are going to purchase lighter weight clothes than you usually wear. I also bought water shoes for the encounter with dolphins. Glad I had hiking boots. Of course they serve chicken and beef and beans, and fabulous tropical fruit, but this is a trip for people who like fish. Imagine the Amazon flooding into the jungle. Now imagine a fish that eats fruit and nuts while swimming about in the jungle. Imagine that fish getting fat to hold it through the lean season. That's tambaqui. I could eat it every day. And look up hoatzin before you go. Looks like a cross between a teradactyl and a turkey.

Definitely do recommend! A great way to experience and learn about the Amazon rain forest, the Amazon basin (not the same thing, who knew?), and the people of the Amazon. Very pleasant and knowledgeable guides. The crew of the Amazon Clipper Premium are very friendly and helpful. This trip is rated "Let's Go!". That rating definitely applies, but not because any physical activities are particularly strenuous but rather because there are so many activities each day and because it's very not and humid in the Amazon. Any walks we took were around a mile or two at most, but there is almost no breeze in the rain forest. Terrain could be steep and slippery at times but wasn't too bad and the walking pace was slow. The trip materials emphasized that we should wear closed-toe hiking shoes, long sleeved shirts and pants, and have our pants tucked into our socks. You should pay attention to this! The long sleeves and pants are for the mosquitoes (which by the way weren't bad at all) but the shoes and socks are for the ants. My socks were too thin, and I can tell you from personal experience that the ants do bite. It's not the worst bite in the world but it's definitely worth avoiding if you can. Some of the trails can be wet and muddy especially if it recently rained. Getting to and from Manaus can be a challenge - most people from the US have to go through Panama City and the flights arrive and leave Manaus in the wee hours of the morning. Make sure you have accommodations for the day you arrive (at 1:30am) and the day you leave (at 3:30 am) even if you don't use them for the full day. Depending on how you booked your flights these accommodations may or may not be included, but even if you have to book them yourself they are well worth it. Overall I give this one a 10/10

An amazing experience, even better than expected. Swimming with the pink dolphins was incredible. Seeing so many birds, monkeys, reptiles, insects and interesting plants was very rewarding. The boat was comfortable and the food was local and delicious.

What a great adventure! Our guide, Wolf Wink, was knowledgeable, indefatigable, cared about Brazil and the Amazon, and funny! Our trip was in mid-November and the water levels were just starting to rise again, so at their lowest. But we still moved through the byways off the Rio Negro and the Amazon, and saw plenty of birds, caiman, monkeys, plus the usual flowers, butterflies, and bugs. We imagined the forests when the water levels are 20 - 30 feet higher and wished we could see that. We did see river dolphins, and the pink dolphins at a spot designated for visitors to interact with them -- imagine a good-natured, bumbling golden retriever looking for a fish treat, only a dolphin. The naturalist who joined Wolf, Aldinei, was also exceptional at finding and identifying the animals living along the water and in the trees. We encountered few mosquitoes, and no chiggers or other pests. Wolf prepared us well. Of course it was hot, in the mid-80's at night and 90 - 95 F during the day, with high humidity. So great that I brought enough clothes to switch out at least every other day. The rooms were air-conditioned, so it was possible to rinse out a few at a time and have them dry over 12 - 18 hours. The rooms had their own bathrooms, were small but totally adequate. Meals were prepared on the ship (we were on the Amazon Clipper "Premium" -- the name of the ship), and had local vegetables, fruit, fish and meat, and breads prepared daily. Delicious! Plenty of juice, coffee, and mineral water, and wine and other beverages available for sale (reasonable prices). As for money, I did get a few Real for the Manaus craft market, and just to have in case, but honestly, credit cards were almost universally accepted. Maybe bring two -- one of mine got rejected at one point, not sure why. I did bring dollars for end-of-the-journey tips to crew and guides. Of course the plane trip there and home was tedious (I had four separate planes), but to be expected. Rest when you get home.

This was a great trip and I highly recommend it. I was a little worried about getting in and out of the canoes but there is always someone there to help steady you. The "mother ship" was comfortable and clean and the crew was outstanding. You were never pressured to attend every outing; it was your choice to go or not. I got sick during the trip and self-isolated for a couple of days and was well taken care of for my meals and comfort. Having said this, know that you are on a boat, on a river and there is no pharmacy available. If you need cold meds, etc, you need to bring them with you. If you have a need for kleenex or wash cloths, bring them with you. Another reviewer indicated that walking sticks are a good idea and I second that. We were told they weren't absolutely necessary but boy, did they come in handy for me. About picture taking...lighting is low in the jungle and sometimes you are shooting at night. Learn about optimal camera settings before you need them. Bring a few extra batteries for your stuff and if you don't use them, leave them with the group leader. He/she can use them. I bought a rechargable neck fan and it great to use during our jungle walks. Air tag your luggage. Envelopes for tipping is a nice touch (tipping is absolutely optional). Go go go and learn learn learn. You will be glad you did.

Great program and instructors. Believe them when it is stated that this trip is high activity. There are steps and steep riverbanks. If you use hiking poles on walks, take them. Only for one walk was a hiking stick provided. The clothing needs really are casual so don’t overpack. This was one of my favorite trips ever!

The Brazilian rainforest has always been of interest to me. The Road Scholar trip to Brazil answered many questions about a vast area in the southern hemisphere. The rainforest plays a very important part in the world climate. Until you travel on Amazon river you will not have any idea of its size and importance. It was a wonderful trip.

We took this trip mid-October and happily saw only limited rainfall and had minor encounters with mosquitos. Just about perfect imo. The time in Manaus was interesting, visiting the city market, many historical sights, and steak and seafood restaurants. Had some free time to explore on our own, too. But the cruise portion was the best part. First, the boat staff is amazing. They kept the rooms clean, the cooks prepared so many delicious meals and desserts, and the engineers kept the boat humming. The AC was cold and the hot showers and faucets great and used river water (so don’t swallow any!). But don’t worry, bottled water is plentiful. The excursion guides were highly knowledgeable and had eagle eyes when it came to spotting wildlife, day or night. On the many day excursions, we visited a local public school (Teacher Appreciation Day is a national holiday in Brazil-WOW!), visited with an indigenous tribe, walked through an abandoned rubber-era city, visited a wood focused art center and so much more. Be sure to do the two fascinating short hikes through the tropical rainforest with your guide using a machete to clear a path. The morning and night small boat excursions are where you will see most of the birds, Cayman’s and snakes. We saw 70+ bird species! The group leader is so important on these trips, and Wolf Wink, our group leader, was very knowledgeable of Amazonian history, wildlife and culture and made the trip a success in my opinion.

I highly recommend this enchanting riverboat adventure into the heart of the Amazon rain forest on the Rio Negro. If you are looking to get away to a huge natural environment full of history and unique flora and fauna, sunsets and isolated river views and interesting people, hop on board. In fact your 3 deck river boat hosting only RS participants is one of the best aspects of the whole trip. The Captain has been at the helm for almost 20 years and everything on bard was done on our schedule. When we venture out in early AM by motorized canoes, coffee and tea is available before hand and our rooms are refreshed and breakfast awaits our return. If you are hot and sweaty after a late afternoon hike, your room has been refreshed again so you take another shower and then relax with a beer or soda to watch the untouched islands along the forest. It’s a remote wonderland and for our October trip very little rain and very few mosquitos. Louis Fazen

This was a very interesting and well-rounded trip. Not physically strenuous and a lot of downtime due to not being able to have many afternoon activities during the hot middle of each day. Well balanced between activity and relaxation. We went in October (dry season) so experienced almost no rain during the trip and surprisingly few insects! Each day started early (6am while still on the cooler side) and included a long free-time "siesta" each afternoon during the hottest hours. The after-dinner nighttime canoe excursions were interesting. Comfortable cabins on the riverboat with air conditioning and Starlink internet service.

I spent a month in Brazil and this trip made up the last 1/3 of my journey there. Though this particular RS trip came with flights, I did not use that because I was already in the country. This confused RS for some reason. I arrived in Manaus a day early and met the Trip Leader, Wolf, before everyone else. This was my first RS trip and it was pretty wonderful! Wolf with his delightful personality, stories and knowledge. There was also a local nature guide who could ID a ton of birds and animals. HINT: download the Merlin ID bird app specifying "All of Brazil" for offline use. As any good tour company, there was great communication between me and them. They will send a packing list; read it, use it. MUST-HAVES: binocs, power bank to charge your phone while away from the mother ship, wide-brim hat. Because of my asthma, I was on prednisone during my trip. Being immunocompromised, swimming in the Amazon waters was a concern but I couldn't pass up the chance to swim with the wild pink dolphins. I got home Sept 18 and have had zero problems. My favorite memories: the beauty and stillness of the landscapes;the variety of wildlife; a stop at Señor Pedro's farm; learning how to make caipirinhas, the Brazilian national drink. The food: every day we were served different fresh fruit juices and a variety of fish, all from the Amazon. Wolf's evening "Daily Native Legend". The crew of our Riverboat would become friends and many would hug you with honest enthusiasm. I enjoyed this trip so much that once I got home, I signed up for one of their 2026 Egypt trips! I am a 67 year old female with many decades of independent solo travel experience. Brazil was country #49.

The Amazon by Riverboat was amazing! I traveled with a family group of 7 but the participants were all so much fun a solo traveler would have blended right in with all 24 participants. We learned so much, saw incredible wild life, met local people, and it redefined the definition of what a river is. While the climate is hot and humid the activity level was easy. The food was amazing, the Group Leader and Naturalist were exceptional and the Riverboat was delightful! I highly recommend this program. Oh, one more thing, we did not, at any time (even on jungle walks) get inundated by biting insects. Amazing!

The first day was a shock. For the 1st time in 45 years, I was alone as my wife, spouse and partner died suddenly and unexpectedly. A little boy voice cried; "I wanna go home to mommy" - meaning Gail. I woke up the following morning realizing that I was stuck with my own decision to visit the Amazon, something Gail had no interest in. As the trip unfolded, I began to relax and enjoy the environs, getting to know the other 14 younger participants. The latter was the most difficult for me, because Gail always interfaced with strangers more easily than me. I used to just tagged along. Now I had to start listening and comprehending what was being disclosed to me about the trip and the activities of the day. It seemed I was always running back for something that I had forgotten and had to run back to my cabin to obtain. If I was late for an activity, I can only say in my own defense, I was never too late ... I don't think. :-) I thoroughly enjoyed the "guides". Pappy was the acknowledged knowledgable expert in the natural lore of the region. The other guide, the name of whom escapes me, was a naturalist and educator for the group and was personable and knowledgable himself. One of the hardest things was getting used to the structure of the daily educational actives. Up at 5:30 A.M. That is in the morning folks, when even the sun has yet to show its face. But that was when the bird activity was at its best. Throughout the day we had a constant flow of educational activities culminating in the 10:50 p.m. evening, 16 person canoe ride to see/observe/and even capture denizens of the night. No not vampires silly - crocs, snakes, birds settling in for the night. The local food was flat out excellent, but American food choices were always provided for the less adventuresome. The boat was kept immaculate even to the point of inconveniencing us travelers by requiring we take off foot gear before reboarding the boat. Heaven forfend.

We had an amazing experience on the Amazon Clipper Ship Premium! The early morning and evening boat rides enabled us to see so much wildlife, such as 2 jaguars, parrots, toucans, macaws, iguanas, snakes and so much more! The jungle walks were very doable and very interesting. We went at the end of June and beginning of July, and we didn't see very many mosquitoes. We actually have more at home in SC. This trip is highly recommended!

Be sure you are interested in birds and monkeys because you will see a lot of them. Check your cabin bedding for bedbugs the very first night on board. Don’t expect a wide variety of meals because it is a small boat. However, they do a good job featuring local ingredients. The desserts were refreshing and amazing. The advice to bring many changes of clothes was so true. Mine were either wet, sweaty or both.

I highly recommend it this trip! Although the daily schedule sounded daunting for a non-morning person, I would not have missed the 6:00 a.m. canoe rides for anything; we saw so much! (And yes, they do put out coffee by 5:30 a.m.) Others have noted, but I would stress the importance of a good pair of binoculars; the benefit to your experience will offset their weight in your luggage. Many of the very colorful birds perch in the high treetops and without binoculars, they are mere silhouettes. The same with the iguanas, monkeys and sloths. Those with zoom-lens cameras were able to capture much better photos than any phone, but folks are always willing to share great images. We were there at the beginning of May, the end of the rainy season. I was concerned before leaving by weather reports about “dangerous flood conditions” on the Rio Negro in Manaus. But it turned out that high waters meant we could go everywhere we wanted to; drought conditions apparently affect trips more. Bugs were a non-issue, amazingly enough, not that we were not prepared just in case. As for rain, I expected far more, but of course you never know. For the one morning canoe ride where it poured non-stop, we were glad for our rain gear and I was glad to have purchased a poncho rather than bringing my typical Goretex jacket. As a solo traveler, I found the cabin quite comfortable but I can see where it might be tight for two people, especially with a lot of luggage. There’s really no need to pack a lot. The common areas on the boat were spacious and comfortable and amenable to socializing with the great people you will inevitably meet! Two books I enjoyed reading to set the stage for the journey were The River of Doubt (Candice Millard) and The Unconquered – In Search of the Amazon’s Last Uncontacted Tribes (Scott Wallace) neither of which were on Road Scholar’s list.

Boat comfortable, guides (Algenei & Franz) were both great, itinerary well planned. one suggestion: I didn't bring much cash since materials indicated tips were included in trip fee. This program is excellent. You get to be on the water in a comfortable boat for a week, mostly away from built-up areas. You get to explore the edges of the river in a small boat early in the morning and after dark at night and see birds, animal, etc up close. Each trip in the small boat is an adventure! There are many opportunities to meet Indigenous People and learn how they are maintaining their language and culture. Oh, and the food onboard is excellent.

This was a great trip! We had fantastic guides Joao and Al -- both are very knowledgeable and did all they could to maximize our time and experience in the Brazilian Amazon. It was warm. We did get rained on. We did encounter ants but only a couple of mosquitoes. We had a wonderful group of interesting people. For anyone taking this trip, I recommend bringing a pair of lightweight waterproof hiking boots and water shoes (it helps to have two pairs of shoes to alternate getting wet in the canoe rides and boots are great protection from ants and wet ground on jungle walks). Also, a lightweight rain poncho works best during the sudden storms while in the canoe -- pull it on over your backpack, life vest, and shoes for best protection in the rain. Finally, I absolutely loved seeing all the birds, caiman, iguanas, monkeys, dolphins, and especially the pink flower petals on the water.

We loved the private riverboat experience on the Amazon, Rio Negro and their tributaries. The leaders, Wolf and Aldinei, were outstanding as were the excursion canoe pilots Roberto and Jameson. They could spot an animal in a tree from a football field away and, in the case of snakes on a night safari, would climb into a tree, entice the snake to wrap around a long tree branch held high, and bring the snake (still on the branch) near the canoe for us to look at closely. Same with an iguana. And we stopped beneath a branch with monkeys hungry for the fruit offered by a guide. Meals onboard were healthy and tasty (including the piranha soup from our own catch), and we greatly enjoyed getting to know the other travelers on this 11-day tour. Manaus has a fascinating history with rubber barons and the opera house. Just be prepared to arrive there at 2:30 in the morning and depart for home at a similar early-morning time.

This trip was exceptional! Trip, guides, accommodations, and itinerary were indescribable. The river excursions in a small canoe through the jungle waterways were over-the-top. The Amazon Clipper “ship” (holds 32 max) was comfortable and intimate yet plenty spacious. The guides patiently pointed out animals, birds, trees that we’d have never seen otherwise. Monkeys, boas, caimans, cocoa pods, coffee trees - 68 different birds and nearly 100 flora and fauna. In the water with pink dolphins, swimming in the river, an over-the-top gorgeous sunset beach dinner set up by the crew, visiting a local river family and eating fruit from their trees and ginger from the ground, visiting a local tribe, delightful crew and guides. It was my first Road Scholar trip, and I can’t imagine using another company for future trips. Rooms were far larger than I’d imagined for a boat, spotless, and cleaned 4+ times a day. Locally sourced food was delicious. Beautifully planned opportunities to purchase gorgeous local items. You HAVE to take this trip!

This trip was totally amazing and exceeded beyond my greatest expectations of what I thought I would see and experience in the Amazon. The itinerary was very well organized and everything that we did was totally fascinating. Our primary guide, Wolf, was with us from start to finish and has expert knowledge about the nature, history and anthropology of the Amazon and Manaus. Our other guide, Hugo, met us on the riverboat, the Amazon Clipper Premium and also had expert knowledge about the flora, fauna and peoples of the Amazon. The crew/staff of the riverboat (as well as our guides) were all excellent and very friendly. Both Wolf and Hugo, led us on excursions using the two smaller boats in the early morning and at night along the riverbanks, smaller streams, lakes, marshes, and swamps of the Rio Solimoes aka Amazon and the Rio Negro to find and observe wildlife in the mornings and nights (even observing the stars in the southern hemisphere). The views from the riverboat of the expansive rivers and the skies at sunrise, sunset, and at night were beautiful. The places we saw in the city of Manaus were also fascinating. I loved our visit to the main city market with its abundance of tropical fruits, vegetables, meats and fish from the region and the rivers. The meals were outstanding on the riverboat as well as in the restaurants that we went to in Manaus - I especially loved eating fish (tambaqui or pirarucu) everyday, as well as the various side dishes made with manioc/mandioca (cassava/yucca), beans, fruits, and the desserts, etc. - Brazilian food is delicious! The caipirinhas served at the bar on the boat were great. Finally, the accommodations on the boat and in the hotels were very good. Thank you for a great experience!

The trip to the Amazon was very interesting - the ship (Amazon Premium) , accommodations, crew and Road Scholar guides and hosts were excellent - meaning they were very knowledgeable, courteous, and helpful - without exception. The program is billed as an "adventure,", not a "vacation" and they live up to that promise by keeping a very busy schedule. One does not have to participate in everything to have a rewarding experience - which is good because the program has opportunities to keep you busy from early morning (5:30am to fairly late in the evening (11pm or so). The guests were a pleasure to be with - as has been our experience on three past Road Scholar trips. The activities were generally well planned out and executed. We had the opportunity to learn a lot about the history and development of the area around Manaus and the Amazon and Negro Rivers - or at least as much as practical in a seven day cruise. My one major complaint was the scheduling of airline connections too and from the States to Manaus - we spent way too much time waiting for at the Miami and Panama airports. The crew did an amazing job of getting us everywhere on time - however that included almost 43 hours constant f travel time from wake up on Friday morning to arrival in our home in Indiana On the way back - including a three + hour connection time Manaus, and then Panama and an aa d 7 hour connection in Miami - there should have been better options suggested by the travel organizers to avoid this - even if they were at a higher price than what was available with the complementary international flights offered as part of the program . I also thought k the "swimming with the pink porpoises-was pretty hokey and amounted to being in a kiddie pool with a trainer and, yes, a pink porpoise. Most of the other activities were educational ,interesting, and fun. We were definitely more than exhausted when we reached our home and thankful to get there.

Even though it was rainy season, we only had one day where it impacted our trip. The hard part was getting there and home but once there, it was truly a wonderful and eye opening experience.

This trip to the Amazon was amazing and so educational!! We had 20 participants so it was the perfect group size. I have traveled all over the world with Road Scholar and this trip is in my top three. The variety of animals we saw was incredible - and a 'must do' for bird watchers. See a small flock of blue macaws flying and squawking together was a once in a lifetime experience for me.

Take this trip! The itinerary and activities are awesome. Expect a bit of rain and some bugs, but so worth these minor inconveniences- it’s the jungle. So many birds, animals, plants, and bugs to see! What a fantastic place to take canoe rides and do a bit of light hiking.

This was my very first trip with Road Scholar. I always wanted to visit the Amazon before it was ruined any further. And, it was better than I could've imagined. I came away with the feeling that folks ARE taking care to preserve the forest and the river. Our guide, Wolfie, was amazing. I really enjoyed learning about the history of the city, people, food and traditions of Manaus. And then as our trip progress to the riverboat, the river, jungle, and the villages of the indigenous people. Wolfie's knowledge of Brazil was impressive. He shared so much detail throughout our whole trip. The transfer to our boat was seamless. I was impressed how anyone could keep 24 people on a set schedule. (Of course this company is celebrating 50 years, so you must know what you are doing.). Anyway, the whole riverboat experience is nothing I have ever done. I doubted my endurance to 'keep up', but everyone in the group supported each other if anyone needed help. That was another impressive observation. We were very like minded. We added another very knowledgeable guide on our boat, Hugo. Hugo, who had been raised on the Amazon, complemented Wolfie perfectly. I also want to give a shoutout to our small boat guides who were brave and knew the river like the back their hand. They always made us feel so comfortable. There were others that helped us get in and out of the small boats. These were the help that cleaned off our shoes and helped to keep things moving smoothly. Finally, to our on board staff; our chefs, cleaning crew, and most importantly our bartender; Eddie. I will never forget all of you and I hope someday to redo this trip. This was an amazing lifelong dream of mine. I was so impressed with Road Scholar that I vow to try and take at least one trip per year with you. Thank you so very much.

I apologize for the tardiness in submitting my review. I caught a terrible cold at the end of the trip and have only just recovered. I saw the note giving us a credit for the trip. I'm not sure what our fellow Road Scholars wrote but there were lots of positives about the trip which I want to mention. Our guide Al made a supreme effort to give us a great experience. He was hindered by the changes to the itinerary necessitated by the drought. And Road Scholar might have warned us more explicitly that due to the depth of the river there were places that the boat could no longer go. Additionally, unfortunately, 5 of our group lost their luggage and although it eventually arrived, that put a crimp in the beginning of the trip because individuals were missing needed medication, clothes etc. Again, not Al's fault and he did his best to help get the bags back. [We were all under the impression that a Road Scholar representative would be at our departing flight in Miami (where the missing bags might have been retrieved before departure) but no one was there.] The trip to Manaus is long and a little grueling. In my opinion, the entire boat crew (starting with Al and Wayne) worked hard to teach us about the Amazon region, the flora, fauna, animals, and the residents. It clearly is undergoing climate change plus some growing pains from tourism. Even though the boat was not a fancy cruise ship, it was perfect for the trip. The spaces were lovely; everyone was friendly, and the food was excellent. I liked that we were learning from indigenous Brazilians, not necessarily professional experts. Their pride and love for their country was apparent while at the same time they voiced concern about the clash between tradition & change, exemplified by the lack of government controls over the vast Amazon national park system. We were kept busy with informative jungle walks, boat rides, activities, swimming, discussions, and visits to villages etc. I, for one, will always remember it.

PHENOMENAL trip. Physically it is not at all demanding (sit on boat, sit on canoe, sit at lectures, brief and slow walks in jungle, ruins, etc) except for sleep deprivation. Boat trips daily at 6am and 8:30pm both are magical but I had to skip a couple evening trips as I am unable to sleep during the afternoon siesta times and need more sleep especially after the long flight. My trip mid June was a little different as the boat had to go to the cultural festival in Parintins so we had only 1 partial hotel night before boarding the boat and i think it would be much better to go when can get 2 nights at hotel right away upon arrival to catch up on sleep. Much of time in Manaus is interesting but a time filler; the purpose of the trip is the Amazon/Rio Negro. WHICH ARE AMAZING!!!Insects were not a problem (except for the arachnophobic but even we survived); I think the vaccines and malaria meds I took were not necessary; no one on our trip had issues with insect bites. WAY more skeeters and other bugs at home in MN. The heat and humidity can be sapping but you are not out in the heat of the day. Plan that your clothes will be soaked through with sweat once or twice daily - hangars are provided to hang to dry in front of the a/c in your cabin and save cleaner/dryer clothes for evenings. Just rewear the dried/soaked clothes. I would recommend high water time (when I went) to go as the jungle underwater is just so amazing - the heavy wood canoes drive right over the treetops and it is just so different. Would like to return in low water to see more animals and white sand beaches lining the river but if I do not get there again I am glad I went during high water. The boat is comfortable and for a single traveler the cabin was adequate in size but would have been a squeeze for a couple but no one complained. Wish I had requested one of the balcony cabins. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TRIP

5 Stars The Amazon Clipper Premium was the perfect way to see this gorgeous and remote area and I appreciate that Road Scholar chartered them to take us "off the map" and into Jaú National Park. The ship staff was friendly, food delicious and plentiful, and the early morning and evening small boat excursions were absolutely spectacular. The ship is not luxurious, but it was comfortable, clean and the AC worked well, which proved to be critical to my satisfaction. It was extremely hot and humid and I came back from every excursion off ship drenched in sweat. Be prepared to change clothes often! Heed the activity level rating. Days are long and full of activities. Even though the walks were not long, the heat and humidity will drain you and you have to pay close attention to your footing. Getting into and out of the excursion boats takes some agility as well. All in all, a very civilized way to explore the jungle!

Overall the trip was very good and very interesting. Wolf and Hugo and the entire staff were super and did everything they could to make every day fun and informative. We're very glad we went! And Road Scholar did a wonderful job helping to track down and deliver my wife's luggage that somehow did not make it to Manaus on our flight. We had it after only 2 days and saved my wife from a long trip with no change of clothes. A couple of suggestions - the Road Scholar name tags are too big and I feel most people don't like wearing something like that around their necks (many on our trip did not wear them and the same has been true on other trips). I also forget to out them on most of the time as well. I would come up with another method - just a simple stick-on name tag or maybe even just a name plate at meals for the first couple of days till everyone knows each other. I will not wear those name tags in public either (airports, restaurants, etc). The food on this trip was good but way too much food!!! Three large hot meals a day is too much! I would make breakfast very simple or go to a brunch/dinner format. We actually got tired of eating after a couple days. We noticed Manaus had a zoo with only Amazon animals. Might have been nice to go to the zoo before heading out on the boat to get a little glimpse of what we might see, but I'm sure if the zoo could fill that desire or not.

PROS: boat cruises were amazing, even magical! CONS: Ship needs updating/better maintenance. Itinerary needs updating-Novo Airao Is actually a 2 1/2 mile walk over broken concrete sidewalks in the hot sun-not 1 mile over dirt terrain as stated in the itinerary. Such details were not given to us ahead of time. Swimming with the dolphins was a highlight for me. However, we were only given five minutes in the water with the Dolphins. Very disappointing! Manaus is a dirty broken down town. The marketplace is gross! Visitation there should be completely eliminated. Our last two days there took away the beauty of the Amazon trip. Having to walk to restaurants in the dark over broken sidewalks was dangerous and unpleasant. You must be first in line at the buffet for meals. Once an item runs out, it is not replaced. I have traveled with road scholar several times; however, if this was my first trip with them, it would probably have been my last.

One aspect of my Road Scholar experiences has been that the activity level and itinerary description is very accurate. Believe the challenge level, and don’t fool yourself that you are more capable than you are if the description seems a little too challenging. They know what they are talking about, believe them and don’t wish it were different. What they say is what you get. Our trip on the Amazon WAS wet, it rains very hard, the excursion boats go out anyhow and you still see a lot of wildlife, both before sun rise and after sunset.I go with the adage, “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.” Bring clothing that will dry easily on the hangers in front of the AC unit, it’s pretty effective, but less so with solid cotton clothing. This is not specifically a birding trip, but the birds are fantastic; the guides will help you spot and identify an amazing array of wildlife.

The trip to the Amazon by private riverboat was exciting and a new adventure. But be forewarned that it is hot and very humid, and if you tend to sweat a lot, you will be drenched several times a day. Be prepared! The Amazon River trip properly spends more time on the Rio Negro. Amazing guides, and remarkable scenery. The included flights from Miami are overnight, with a stop in Panama City, Panama midway. These start and end the wonderful trip, but it's been years since I had to pull two all-nighters within 13 days. The river trip is worth revisiting those all-nighters.

A great trip all in all, esp Wolf, he is a very good guide, knowledgeable and funny. He cares about the participants. The boat was perfect and the crew were courteous and efficient. One complaint, the jungle hikes are more intensive and difficult than portrait. We were informed to bring hiking poles (the branches were NOT a substitute) and yet when the hike preparation came, we were not told to bring them. Also, we were informed there is no need for hiking shoes when in fact, they are a necessity. I even wrote to you separately but was assured there is no need for hiking shoes. The ground was dam from the seasonal flooding and steep, very slippery. A couple of the participants slipped, One hurt his ankle and had to sit out for the rest of his trip. Another lady slipped twice and luckily there was no injury. A third lady had a case of dehydration and that resembled a seizure. She had to be taken to the hospital in Manaus by speed boat (2 hour ride). She missed the rest of the trip. We were told there were few mosquitos but there were chiggers all over. Unbeknownst to us all, we saw rash and bites all over our body at the very end of the trip for some. You really should NOT play down on these issues and be honest with the potential customers!

This was my first Road Scholar trip. I was very impressed with the overall quality of the program. The immensity and uniqueness of the Amazon basin is profound and really can't be adequately expressed in words. It has to be seen to be believed is I guess what I'd say. If you enjoy nature in all its glory, I expect this is a trip you'd enjoy. A few points to note if you are considering this trip. The leaders, Wolf and Al, are superb. Both extremely knowledgeable about the history, flora and fauna. Wolf, the main leader, also is tremendously entertaining, truly an excellent, humorous public speaker. Because you're confined to a boat for most of the trip the experience is intensely social and communal. That's not a good or bad thing, just something to be aware of. There's a fairly heavy emphasis on bird watching. Many in the group of 22 were keen on birds. But many were not. Sleep is disjointed throughout because you're often up at 5:30am and and out at night on the two boats used for exploring. The quality of accommodations on the boat are good, not excellent. The staff on the boat are quite pleasant and helpful, though there is a language barrier. My only real criticism would be that the trip is too sedentary. There were two opportunities for "jungle" walks. I'd have liked to see at least double that. Increased swimming would also have been appreciated, as hot and humid as it is there. The one swim we had was wonderful. But overall this is a fabulous expedition that I highly recommend.

The program was excellent and exceeded my expectations. My previous experience with the Amazon involved staying at a jungle lodge without any escape from the heat and humidity. Sleeping in an air-conditioned cabin and dining in an air-conditioned dining room made all the difference in my comfort. I added many species to my bird life list through the dawn and night small boat excursions, and I learned so much about the Amazon, its ecology and its people that reshaped the ideas I had from popular media. We encountered only a few biting insects during jungle walks and shore excursions; chiggers were worse than mosquitoes for a couple of people in our group. Cloud build up during the day provided some protection from intense sun but we still used hats and sunscreen. Our guides recommended long-sleeved shirts and long pants tucked into socks in closed-toe shoes for the jungle walks and farm visit; otherwise, shorts, t-shirts and sandals were good for shipboard comfort. Everyone in our group had good quality binoculars so we were able to see all the birds, wildlife and native flowers and plants and get identification help from our guides. The food was outstanding and plentiful and there always were vegetarian options for the two non-meat eaters in our group. We had many fish offerings as well as chicken, pork or beef entrees; also, who can complain about cake for breakfast and "ice cream" and fruit for lunch and dinner dessert every day? Memorable experiences included two swims in the Rio Negro, touching the pink dolpins, and being the first person to spot the Harpy Eagle, even before the guide.

His lectures about everything Amazon was perfect; the legends were fun, enjoyed the information about Brazil, the Rainforest, birds, animals, plants, natives, and more - not too much, not glossed over. We didn't need as much bug repellent as we brought (a good thing). Used sunscreen every day. I wish I would have known ahead of time to bring long pants, long sleeve shirts, and a raincoat that were dark or muted colors. White was not the best. With a rough start travel-wise, we were all tired, hot and sticky. The riverboat tour was mostly great, though we saw fewer birds and animals than I expected. I enjoyed learning about the Amazon, its ecology, and the effect of water levels that change with the seasons. Good lectures, okay walks in the jungle. We needed more exercise though--too much sitting on the boat or in canoes. Many of us got sick with one thing or another. Mosquitos were not a problem on the river, but do bring bug repellent for jungle walks. Bring your own hair dryer unless you want to ask for one each time you need it. Overall, it was worth going, but I would not want to go back.

My 30th program with Road Scholar, and a rating of 4 Stars. The Amazon is a mysterious place, and we learned a lot about the region, its people, and ecology from our excellent leader, Wolf Wink. Wolf is knowledgeable and very entertaining. Our group was also compatible and well-traveled, which made for interesting conversations. Some practical matters if you consider this trip: Manaus is difficult to get to, with complicated flight logistics and arrival/departure. The schedule involves early and late excursions, to avoid the stifling heat/humidity, with downtime during the day. Bring many changes of clothes. If there were mosquitos, we didn’t see them, and the one snake we observed was because we were looking for it. Getting in/out of the excursion boats, walking up hills and on uneven surfaces, etc., require reasonable fitness and balance. The Manaus hotel is merely okay, and the boat is old and tired. While the staff and food were very good, and things were clean, there are no amenities, such as WiFi, laundry, or cabin spaciousness. There was a bar, soft drinks were complimentary, and you replenished water from a cooler. The cabins are air conditioned, as are the dining and meeting rooms. There do not appear to be more upscale options for Manaus-based Amazon cruises, unlike the case in the Peruvian section of the river. Similarly, while there was a wide variety of wildlife, it was not on par with Costa Rica, just to use an example. If you want to visit the Brazilian Amazon, this is a good program, and I hope that my practical comments are helpful.

This trip was our fifth Road Scholar adventure and in almost all ways, it met our usual high expectations. It was an extraordinary trip. The riverboat experience was outstanding—the boat itself was in great shape, very clean, roomy cabin with a great window, and the crew was without exception friendly and helpful. Getting on the smaller boats at least twice a day was wonderful—the early morning and evening boat rides were an amazing opportunity to see the flora and fauna up-close. Our local guides were outstanding. We felt very fortunate to have Aldinei as one of our guide/naturalists. He was a great asset in terms of his outstanding fund of knowledge, his enthusiasm for teaching, and his consistently warm but professional interactions with us all. Each day had its own remarkable features, but a few of the things that were outstanding: 1. Jau National Park is beautiful, mystical in its trees and water and beautiful birdlife, especially when explored at night. 2. Piranha fishing was great fun, and it cemented our view of the piranha being smaller than expected, but having amazing teeth! 3. Exploring the abandoned ruins of colonial mansions left to the jungle 4. Hiking in the jungle with identification of many plants and fruits and insects.

This trip changed my goals for travel to include guidance through the natural world. Such a wonderful combination of motorized canoe travel in the light and in the dark. I can't say enough good about it. The wonder of nature in the wild. With guides who have lived it. So good to experience the city of Manaus, as well as the River life and the Indigenous people. This felt very safe due to the guidance of the RoadScholar team. To eat the local food was a comforting experience as it was healthy and tasty. Thank you so much!

The trip is fantastic, but don't let RS arrange your airfare. We were supposed to receive flight information 2 weeks before the trip. That had not arrived by that time, and the person at RS I spoke to explained that there was a different company that was handling the booking and that he had no information about what was happening and could do nothing about it. I was able to contact someone at CopaAir, since we knew that airline involved, who explained that they had not been paid for the tickets despite several requests to the unnamed intermediary. This was a week before we were supposed to leave, and it was not clear that the tickets would indeed be issued. The flights were finally confirmed 2 days before departure. It's not worth the uncertainty and aggravation. Also, you will be booked on a flight that arrives at 2 AM on the day the trip starts despite the itinerary saying you arrive the evening before.

There is nothing better than an early morning boat ride to experience the beauty of the Amazon. Well maybe the late-night boat rides to search for the nocturnal wildlife. Experience the Amazon from a boat with amazing views on every side, jungle hikes, great lectures and the most wonderful boat crew around. Explore all the Heart of the Amazon has to offer. You won't regret it.

What an amazing adventure! We saw over 60 different species of birds, two different snakes, iguanas, sloths and monkeys. Wolf was a fantastic group leader, so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the Amazon ecosystem and its inhabitants.

Wolf and Aldinei were excellent guides on our trip. We learned so much along the route and enjoyed our piranha fishing and petting pink dolphins. The early morning canoe rides were exciting enough to endure the 5:30 a.m. wake-up knocks. We became experts at identifying birds, animals, plants, and making cocktails. We traveled in May and experienced the river at a high level. Mosquitos were not an issue. We were fortunate that we experienced only one downpour while we were out in the canoes and about and what a downpour it was! It was hot and humid but we came prepared. Since our activities were scheduled in the morning and evening, we were able to take a siesta during the hottest part of the day. The staff on the Premium treated us like royalty, always with a smile on their faces. Our cabins were spotless, and our meals were delicious. This is a 5-star review but RS’ system doesn’t allow me to add the 5-star rating.

This was an outstanding trip in every way! The group leader, Wolff Wink, was extraordinary. He is extremely knowledgeable, well organized and has a fabulous sense of humor. He is a great story teller. He is also patient and kind. He is sensitive to the needs of participants as well as culturally attuned to the people we visited. The little ship we were on was great. There was an assortment of local food served at the meals and the bartender, Eddie, was a gracious host. The staterooms were kept very clean! All of the excursions in the "canoes" were excellent. We saw loads of birds and other wildlife, we caught and ate piranha and had some nice swimming (without piranha). Most of all it was FUN! FUN! FUN!

Navigating the Amazon by riverboat and canoe was amazing. The vegetation and wildlife seen was wonderful. Yes, it rained, but didn't deter any of the activities. Saw two mosquitoes! Our tour guide, Wolf, was so knowledgeable. The river boat and crew were excellent. The experience was almost like being in a movie.

Our Amazon trip was fantastic! You will have experiences that you never dreamed of like swimming in the Amazon River, fishing for piranha, counting sloths in the tree tops, eating the worlds sweetest pineapple and learning about exotic birds and trees. The group leader, Wold Wink, is smart, funny and prepared. The river boat was comfortable. The food was great. Everyone was happy!

I am so very glad I went on this adventure to Amazonas, and so very grateful I did it with Road Scholar! The guides, Wolf and Aldinei, were excellent and kept us safe and informed. The ship's crew was superb. To fish for piranha, to swim in the Rio Negro, to take motorcycle taxis in Novo Aireo, to pet a pink dolphin, to ride in canoes through the jungle in the dark of night with only spotlights to guide our way, to get up with the sun when the forest awakes and hike. Breathtaking! The food was great, especially the local fish and fresh fruits, but a challenge for vegetarians or those on special diets. Our 80 year old participants did wonderfully well, but I was glad to go at 60. Be mentally and physically prepared for hot and humid weather and for sudden rain showers. I never saw a mosquito.

After extensive travel using many vendors my wife and I have found ourselves utilizing Road Scholar for more and more of our travel adventures. We have found their educational values to be superior, their prices quite reasonable and the kind of people they attract educated and amenable. The kind of folks you'd like to be friends or just sit and chat with. Good travel companions.

Amazon by Riverboat is truly a wonderful way to explore the rivers that make up the Amazon basin. Be prepared for 5:30 a.m. boat rides on the Amazon river to see and hear the wildlife as well as jungle walks to experience the forest first hand.

This Road Scholar trip is truly inspiring! You will learn that many of your preconceived ideas about the Amazon were not correct, and you will be amazed at the diversity, size and scope of this area. Learn the origin of Disney's Tree of Life.... I have recommended this to everyone I spoke to and you get great Instagram photos!

This is a fabulous trip. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun. You do not have to be a serious birder but you must enjoy at least casually watching birds to make the most of this trip. I do and I had a wonderful time.

What an amazing adventure on the Amazon, thanks to the leadership of Wolf. His knowledge as a naturalist, his command of many languages, and his patience (with this bird watcher:), made it my best Road Scholar trip ever. The lectures were great, and the early morning and late night canoe excursions were amazing. I enjoyed cruising on the Premium, and appreciated the great staff that went above and beyond to make us comfortable and our trip so enjoyable. All meals were great, especially on the river boat, with wonderful fresh fruit and fish. If you want to experience beauty, great food, and great leadership, this trip is for you! Thanks again, Road Scholar, for offering this trip and providing great leadership!!!!! Marilyn McGee

I thought the trip was quite amazing. I am really glad I decided to go on this trip as it gave me quite a different perspective of the Amazon region Hard to list all of the highlights but certainly seeing and feeding the squirrel monkeys is right up there as well as meeting the native peoples of the area both in a professional sense as guides as well as visitors to their villages. The guides were excellent and the ship , crew and food wonderful. Would highly recommend this trip

This program provides a comprehensive look at life in the Amazon. A broad food palate is provided, the animals and the medicinal value of the rainforest are presented, various lifestyles from city to indigenous tribes are revealed, and conversation about the current environmental efforts of the government and the people is presented. This is one of the best RS trips I have taken.

Our trip on the Amazon in Brazil was informative and relaxing. We went on several excursions every day. Most days we explored areas in a motorized canoe with either the Group Leader or Naturalist. We went piranha fishing and I even caught a small one (which was thrown back) and a large one! We visited several villages, walked through several areas in the rain forest, and had a cookout on the beach. We saw small gray dolphins, botos (pink dolphins), and a variety of birds and animals. The Group Leader, Naturalist, and the boat crew were all so helpful and kind.

Great trip in an area that was new to me. Room on the Premium was excellent and everyone of the crew worked to make it a great experience. Wolf and Hugo managed the activities and helped us identify the 70 or so birds we saw, monkeys, snakes, iganaus (sp.?) we saw. Food was great as was the time spent in Manaus and two excellent restaurants we visited there. An experience to remember--I'll never forget how high the Rio Negro was and we are just starting the rainy season. Physical effort not as high as expected and there are opportunities to opt out if desired. Highly recommended.

Great program, nice ship, knowledgeable leaders. Food was good, accommodations were very nice. It does rain a lot and I wish I had brought my rain-suit instead of just a rain coat. Bring water shoes. Less mosquitoes [and bugs] than I had expected. You will learn a lot. Highly recommend this program.

The Heart of the Amazon trip was great. The Amazon Clipper Premium boat and staff exceeded my expectations. The RS group leader and the guide were both helpful and friendly. Food was excellent. Water used was bottled, so no problems. The Amazon River nature was awesome.

This was a great program if you want a comfortable, fun, and up-close Amazon experience. The ship is not luxurious, but very comfortable, convenient since it is always your base of operations, and the staff and the meals were great. The smaller size provides for access to some areas that would not be an option for larger ships. Our guide, Wolf, was great. It was a great experience.
