At a Glance

Get in touch with your inner artist as you spend a relaxing and rejuvenating week in the heart of Missouri’s Ozarks. Under the tutelage of professional art instructors, learn the basic techniques of watercoloring, including brush strokes, texturing and blending. Then, try your hand at painting a portrait, a landscape and a still life painting. Take in the surrounding natural beauty of the nearby lake and woods as you begin to create a sketch book journal and learn the beauty of writing memoirs. At the end of the week, showcase your work for your fellow artists to enjoy.

Activity note: Check-in from 3:30 p.m. Fruit basket at front desk.

Afternoon: Program Registration: 3:30 p.m. After you have your room assignment, join us at the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing the up-to-date schedule that reflects any changes, other important information, and to confirm the time and location of the Orientation session. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation: 4:30 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. This is a Road Scholar Retreats program. Our programming at Retreat locations includes opportunities for light morning exercise, interaction with members of the local community, a farm-to-table or locally sourced meal, and evening entertainment. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: In the dining room, we’ll enjoy a hot buffet dinner including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices. There is a full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup, as well as many dessert options.

Evening: We’ll spend the evening getting to know each other and taking a look around the Arts and Crafts facility.

Basics of Watercoloring, Wine Tasting

Breakfast: In the dining room, the hot buffet-style breakfast includes fresh fruit, breads, hot and cold cereals, and pastries; beverage choices of coffees, teas, and juices.

Morning: We’ll meet for a hands-on class to learn the basic techniques of watercoloring.

Lunch: In the dining room, the hot lunch buffet includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices. Also featured is a full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup, as well as many dessert options.

Afternoon: We’ll get creative as we learn more painting techniques and work on our watercoloring. After class, there will be some time to explore our facility and try our hand at activities such as mini golf or archery. You may also use this time to continue working on your art projects.

Dinner: In the dining room.

Evening: A fun evening of wine tasting and learning about the local wineries in our area.

Activity note: There is light hiking available, and also seating. Getting on/off a bus; driving about 36 miles, approximately 50 minutes to Elephant Rocks State Park.

Morning: We will spend the morning continuing to learn watercolor techniques and working on projects.

Lunch: In the dining room.

Afternoon: Bring a jacket and spend the afternoon exploring Elephant Rocks State Park and Old Historic Caledonia.

Dinner: In the dining room.

Evening: We’ll spend the evening in the art studio painting a ceramic piece.

Morning: We’ll spend the morning painting our beautiful serene shoreline as we try our hand at landscape paintings. Enjoy a nature hike while you learn more about the surrounding Ozark landscape.

Afternoon: Free time. This period of time has been set aside for your personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Dinner: In the dining room.

Evening: Enjoy the evening relaxing with friends and indulging in an ice cream social. Prepare for check-out and departure tomorrow.
