Our leader, Mafy, was excellent. She is friendly, warm, knowledgeable, and most importantly, so well organized. Everything worked like clockwork: every bus, boat, activity, meal, was on time and well coordinated. She made everyone feel special and welcomed. Our local guide, Marcos, was knowledgeable and similarly friendly. The Galapagos is a unique place, full of unique wildlife. The “active” parts of the trip: kayaking , snorkeling and biking were scheduled twice over the course of the trip. The biking was somewhat challenging, especially the 2nd ride; not especially helped by less than superior bikes. But all fun and part of the experience. Just know that the distances between islands and between the islands and the mainland are great. But just go with the flow. A worthwhile trip.

Great trip, very active, informative. Lots of nature to experience in a part of the world most people don’t get to see.

Our mantra of Road Scholar Galapagos is "yes, we would return in an instant, but we want others to experience the beauty, wildlife, geology, food, landscape, language, artisans, and residents, so we will encourage others to go and truly learn how Ecuadorians have cherished their country and are protecting it so the Galapagos Islands remain the biological, ecological, and geological utopia that it is."

Fun, fun, fun. Very well organized and fantastic guides. Food was so fresh and some accommodations were unique. I snorkeled with sea lions, sea turtles and rays. I'm so glad I went on this trip.

If you’ve ever wanted to go to the Galapagos, Road Scholar’s Survival of the Fittest is the way to do it. The itinerary, coordination of events, and expert guides could not have been better. Sleeping in a tent surrounded by giant tortoises will change your life. This was dreamy adventure travel without the headaches. Highly recommend.

This what a trip of a lifetime. Mafy, Joel and Andrea made it an unforgettable experience. While the destination is spectacular it is the guides that provide the experience. I cannot recommend this trip enough.

During our hike to Sierra Negra Volcano and Volcan Chico we spent a few minutes quietly reflecting. To experience this unique place made me so grateful that others made sure to protect it and continue to do so. Galapagos tortoises, endemic birds, sea lions and sea turtles created a lot of "wow" moments for me. My fellow travelers (and amazing guides) were curious, kind, and supportive of each other in getting out of our individual comfort zones. My smile muscles got a major workout during this trip and I'm still smiling about it 3 days after my return.

I'm still glowing, thinking about our ten days in Ecuador and the Galapagos. The combination of physical activity, wonders of nature, learning about the creatures and geology of the area, and meeting curious and interesting people...it was the right blend for me! Every time I visit a new part of the world, my ability to imagine other lives, and other concerns, stretches and grows.

Totally enjoyed this group trip with very personable guides, Fernando(s) and Antonio. We promptly got a WhatsApp group to make communications and pictures sharing easier or we all take the same pictures and are less in the present. BTW thank you Antonio for the AMAZING bird pictures ! We got lots of physical activities and everyone could do as little or as much as one wanted. Riding once in the rain was actually fun and riding another day in scorching January day was a workout. Kayaking in remote areas was a treat. Snorkeling was little chaotic as a group among other tourists groups, so this can be improved (a lot) but we had so much fun. It is part of the adventure, same for hiking to the caldera on a cloudy day and limited visibility. We had an educative presentation but more would be better. It looks as I should return to the archipelago ...

Wonderful program. Just the right mix of physical and educational activities where you experience the Galapagos instead of just viewing it.

I have just returned from this trip , and I’m still dreaming about it! It was amazingly well organized, from water taxi to speedboat or yacht to disembarking on islands, and everything in between. The hiking, biking with very nice mountain bikes, snorkeling , and kayaking were led by the nicest and most knowledgeable guides, Andres and Juan Carlos. They were so warm and friendly, I miss them already. We always had the option to do or not do any activities. A truck followed the bikers, which gave anyone the opportunity to quit if it became too strenuous. We saw penguins, boobies, and lots of other wildlife.i was happy that I chose this trip from Guayaquil because I wanted to focus on the exploration of these beautiful islands.

The trip to the Galapagos Islands was fantastic, invigorating, physically challenging in a good way, successfully took me out of my comfort zone, and was absolutely wonderful. Great guides, small group of like-minded people, and lots of fun. I felt pampered from the time I landed at the airport until the time I said good-bye to our guide at the airport. Food was exotic and artfully presented, accommodations were impressive, description of this trip is accurate. I recommend this trip highly. Do it while you still can - it's very physical!

Survival of the Fittest is an outstanding program! You do need to be in shape, both to deal with the heat/humidity, and to complete the fun and varied activities. Be prepared to learn and grow, both mentally and physically! The guides both in Guayaquil (Fernando "Primo") and in the Galapagos Islands (Fernado "dos") were incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and encouraging. The trip guide, Andres, was outstanding in every respect. We learned about the human and natural history of Ecuador and the Galapagos, and we saw incredible land and marine life! We were very glad we stayed in local hotels rather than on a cruise boat so that we could more fully experience the culture. We especially enjoyed our stay at Galapagos Magic, where tortoises roam the grounds. The food was delicious and varied also, and the people were friendly and kind. If you love learning about nature, history, and culture, are willing to get outside your comfort zone, and are fit and active, this is the program for you!

This program exceeded my expectations even though I knew that the experience would be outstanding. The Galápagos cannot be adequately explained to others, you simply have to visit to understand and experience it all. The depth of knowledge and outgoing personalities of our guides Antonio, Joel, and Fernando made the total experience even more awesome. Our traveling companions were great people and we all quickly became friends.

This was a well-organized and professionally-led program! It completely lived up to my expectations and the Road Scholar level of excellence. Mafy was a friendly and helpful Group Leader. Fernando provided us with an excellent sightseeing experience in Guyaquil. Luis was a knowledgeable naturalist who hiked, biked, snorkeled, and kayaked with us throughout the Galapagos. Seeing the unique wildlife in this truly special place was definitely a highlight. I also enjoyed interacting with the local residents and learning about their history and current business endeavors. The visits to the brewery, artist studio, farm, and family home were very special! Getting around the Galapagos involves a lot of transfers to different modes of transportation. Our Group Leader, and all the Galapaguenos who drove the boats, trucks, and busses, made it all painless and efficient. The tour ran like clockwork!

Survival of the Fittest: Hiking, Biking and Water Sports on the Galápagos Islands is a wonderful small group trip that is land based, keeping us active the entire trip if desired. Road Scholar is very detailed in its pre-trip materials describing the level of fitness required each day to have a successful trip. Our guides Henry and Fernando were very knowledgeable on the history of the Islands, the Flora and Fauna, each had great attention to detail to keep the trip running smoothly and had very good senses of humor!! This was my second Road Scholar trip and it won't be my last!

This program was exceptional. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the magical place the Galapagos is. I keep telling friends that I could take a million photos but they would not begin to capture the experience of standing next to a tortoise or ceding a park bench to a sea lion pup or contemplating that someone was smart enough to realize the importance of preserving this wonder. It is simply a place one must visit to begin to understand its beauty.

You can't beat the quality of the tour guides, wildlife experience, and fellow travelers I met on this trip! They give you options if you aren't up for all of the hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, etc. It's easy to rent the wet suits, and your tour guides totally have your back.

oh my goodness where to start? Our group was a total blast. Some people get concerned when a female is traveling alone- please don't worry about us! This was a VERY active trip, many times we had 3 activities all in one day. The food was excellent, our two guides "Fernando 1" and " Fernando 2" were so kind and patient, even when one of us was blatantly rude and clueless about it. The scenery and wildlife --breathtaking! The food, excellent. The group size -10 was perfect. If you consider this trip, it includes ocean kayaking, snorkeling with large wildlife in the water, long treks, long bike rides. You need to be in good shape or you will be miserable. LOVED it so much!! (there is nowhere to rate in terms of stars but I would give it a 5+.

Outstanding program in an "enchanted" space. Leader and guides were exceptional -- knowledgeable, interesting, helpful, and filled with a love of their land. Activities pushed me but I felt well-supported by the guides and other participants; it was rewarding to extend myself. I also appreciated the cultural experiences of having meals in homes, visiting the local fish market in Puerto Ayora, and using the local laundry service on Isabela! The trip was thoughtfully organized and enacted. What a gift to spend time in and learn about this unique, diverse environment. Highly recommend!

This is an active trip and was just what I was looking for! The guides were fantastic as were other participants. We saw so much by traveling by land and smaller boat. Be ready for lots of transitions-some of us wished we had kept track of the number of small boats, medium boats, buses and other transportation methods we used! And the Galapagos was fantastic in December. So much wildlife in front of us that we had only seen in photos.

This was a fabulous program with an excellent mix of activities and a great group of participants from a range of backgrounds. It had fewer lectures than other Road Scholar programs I've heard about, and more focus on learning through doing. The activity level was challenging but not overwhelmingly so. The program leaders were knowledgable and personable, and very flexible in accommodating participants' preferences and abilities. Finally, Guayaquil is a very interesting city, and the Galapagos islands are stunning in an almost other-worldly way. I highly recommend this program!

When the program title said "Survival of the fittest", I was skeptical. As an endurance athlete, imagine my surprise to hike a volcano, snorkel with sharks and sea lion, and kayaking enough to make me sleep like a baby. My goal was to run at least one mile at each stop. We had enough free time for me to do that with a huge smile on my face. Imagine running a trail and having to stop for line of Iguanas crossing your path. If you're able to request the team of Naturalist Richard, and leaders Fernando and Roberto, do so. You're gonna learn stuff and enjoy life.

"Survival of the Fittest" is a great choice if you like to be active and see the sights of three islands. You can explore on your own taking walks, swimming, watching the night skies, and dining in small towns. We chose the rainy season and were glad to find relatively calm water as we transferred from island to island. It was quite warm so the occasional shower didn't stop us. Amazing animals unafraid of humans was the highlight, of course!
