Activity note: Walking .2 miles to/from restaurant for dinner, approximately 4 minutes each way
Afternoon: Registration at the hotel is from 3:00 - 5:00 pmin the hotel lobby.
Dinner: We will have dinner in a local family-friendly restaurant near the hotel. Relax and enjoy a delicious plated meal with your choice of meat, chicken or fish and complimentary coffee, tea or iced tea, as you and your grandchildren begin to get acquainted with the other participants.
Evening: Continue to get acquainted with your fellow participants and get an overview of the upcoming week at orientation immediately following dinner at the restaurant. Upon return to the hotel you might want to enjoy some time in the indoor pool.
Activity note: Travel 8.6 miles and approximately 20 minutes aboard a school bus to Hyde Park, home of the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry. Substantial walking and standing at the Museum throughout the course of the day.
Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast at the hotel includes a delicious assortment of breads, cereal, yogurt, waffles, a changing assortment of hot dishes, coffee, tea, milk, juice and fruit.
Morning: This morning we will travel to Hyde Park, home of President Obama, the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry. We will have an opportunity to explore the many exhibitions at the museum on our own. Experience Networld, learn about the complexities of genetics and experience the hatching of baby chicks, visit the Henry Crown Space Center, or visit the Fairy Castle or one of the other interesting exhibitions at this world class museum.
Lunch: We will have lunch at the museum. You will receive vouchers for the museum food court where they offer a broad array of choices to appease any appetite. Y
Afternoon: Continue your exploration of the museum with an expert-led behind the scenes experience.
Dinner: Dinner tonight is on your own. Chicago is a city renown for its restaurants and Chicago families eat out often. Just within the vicinity of the hotel there is a wide array of family-friendly choices and your group leaders will be happy to help you find one just right for you and your grandchildren.
Evening: This evening you are own your own and after a full day at the museum, the hotel pool may be just the thing to finish up your day. For those with boundless energy, our group leaders will be happy to make suggestions for family-friendly experiences in the city, such as the Centennial Wheel at Navy Pier. At nearly 200 feet tall, this iconic ferris wheel provide 360 degree views of the city and lake.
Activity note: Travel 1.7 miles and 8 minutes aboard our school bus to the Chicago History Museum/ Walking and standing in the museum for 1 - 1/2 hours, followed by 2 hours exploring Chicago aboard a private trolley.
Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: We will spend the morning at the Chicago History Museum. The Museum provides hands on, experiential opportunities to learn about the City and it's people throughout history. Our exploration will include an expert-led exploration of the galleries as well as time to explore on our own.
Lunch: We will have lunch today at the Museum Cafe where a Chicago hot dog will be one of your choices. Did you know that at some hot dog stands in the city it is forbidden to put ketchup on your hot dog?
Afternoon: This afternoon we will board our own private iconic Chicago trolley for a city highlights tour with fun stops along the way. One of our stops today will be the iconic Wrigley Field, for an expert-led behind the scenese experience of this home to the Chicago Cubs, 2016 World Series Champions.
Dinner: We will have dinner tonight at a popular family friendly restaurant downtown. We will enjoy a plated meal with complimentary iced tea, coffee and hot tea.
Activity note: Travel less than 1.5 miles to each of our destinations today aboard a school bus, walking approximately 2 miles and 1-1/2 hour cruise
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: This morning we will focus on the architecture of Chicago. Did you know that Chicago was the home of the original skyscraper? We will begin the morning with a hands-on activity in the Lego Design Studio of the Chicago Architectural Foundation. After building our own models of iconic Chicago buildings, we will head out on foot for an expert led exploration of the city and it's architecture. You may wonder how do architects use art to make buildings distinctive? Explore how art and architecture intersect through guided sketching activities. We will have the opportunity to investigate the artistic elements of the Art Institute of Chicago, Harold Washington Library, and the Federal Center.
Lunch: We will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant this afternoon.
Afternoon: This morning we had the opportunity to learn about the city and it's architecture with hands-on experiences and on foot. This afternoon we will board a local cruise ship to get a better understanding of the city from the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. We will pass under and learn about Chicago's bridges and the unique relationship of the river to the lake, experience the passage through the locks, and listen to many stories relating to the history of Chicago and how it has come to be the city it is today.
Dinner: Dinner tonight is on your own. Our group leaders will be happy to make suggestions of places to eat in close proximity to the hotel. You might choose to pick up a picnic supper tonight and head over to Millennium Park for the free Wednesday night Grant Park Music Festival in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at 6:30 pm. Every Wednesday night you can find thousands of Chicagoans sitting on the lawn, or in the complimentary seats at the back of the pavilion and enjoying a glorious evening of music under the stars.
Activity note: Traveling less than 3 miles to each of our destinations today by school bus, walking and standing at the museum and Willis tower.
Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast at the Hotel.
Morning: This morning we will board the bus for The Field Museum of Natural History. We will have the opportunity to explore with an expert as well as on our own. Ancient Egypt, Dinosaurs, Africa, Gems and Native Americans are among the many wonderful exhibits at this world class institution.
Lunch: Lunch on your own at the Field Museum cafe.
Afternoon: This afternoon we will visit the Sky Deck at Willis Tower, where we will have the opportunity to step out on the glass ledge and view the city from atop the tallest building in the western hemisphere
Dinner: This evening we will have our final dinner together at the hotel. No trip to Chicago is complete without experiencing deep-dish Chicago-style pizza. This evening we will have a pizza/splash party at the hotel's pool. We will have an opportunity to reminisce about what we have experienced this week, swim, play games and make our own dessert "pizzas."
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: The program ends after breakfast. Check out at the hotel is at noon, so you have time to savor your last morning in the windy city. We hope you have enjoyed your experience in Chicago!
