This Roads Scholar trip is amazing. It offers great experiences for grandparents with their grandchildren while learning about Puerto Rico. Snorkeling in coral reefs, swimming in the Caribbean Sea, hiking, walking tours, learning about ecofarming, and experiencing bioluminescent first hand are only the highlights of this wonderful trip that creates lifelong memories for grandparents and grandchildren.

This program provided a wonderful travel experience to share with my granddaughter. We enjoyed all the activities from ziplining to snorkeling. We especially liked the rainforest walks during the day and at night, the visit to a plantain/pinapple farm, and touring Old San Juan. We also learned about indigenous and Spanish contributions to the culture and saw that Spanish is the more commonly used language.

During out trip, the island was visited by Hurricane Ernesto resulting in a loss of 48 hrs. of our activities. We were not able to swim with the flurescent dinoflagellates and had to sit in the resort without being able to swim or participate in the planned activities. Our guides planned an activity for one afternoon for the kids. I would like to know if our travel insurance will reimburse for this travel loss. In addition, our tour of Old San Juan continued despite a published heat precaution. I participated in a tour of the Fort without knowing this which did endanger my healt h. I was able to continue back to Old San Juan where fortunately, we were able to get on the air conditioned bus and cool off. Hurricanes are not an unheard of event in this area in the summer. My granddaughter and I chose this trip after our first choice was cancelled in Galveston/Houston. Without Ernesto, the only other disappointment was the lack of wildlife on land. When walking through the rainforest, we enjoyed the fauna, but there was no wildlife except hearing the "frog". Lack of education and/or viewing the native wildlife which seemed to be viewed only at night?? Our guides were making every effort to "kick and punt", but we did miss a large part of the trip.

Dear Joan, It is unfortunate when weather events can impact our planned activities and understand how disappointing that can be. We are grateful for the notable efforts made by our local staff to provide alternative programming options in lieu of activities disrupted by the storm. We pride ourselves on offering educational adventures of the highest quality, and when we can’t deliver that it’s important we make it up to our participants. That is why we extended compensation to everyone in the group. We hope this will incentivize your return to Road Scholar for what, we hope, will be a more standard experience. Sincerely, Road Scholar

Our leaders were very friendly, informative and adapted well to changes in the weather conditions.

Our 12 year old grandson picked this trip for the snorkeling and ziplines. He loved these and every day provided favorite experiences. He loved the great food. We gained closeness with our grandson who lives in another state. He kept saying thank you!

Road Scholar has made it easy for me to spend time with (so far) four of my five grandchildren in adventuresome and educational ways. So far, I've traveled to Upstate NY, Yellowstone and Puerto with one or two each time. The next (very soon) will be Alaska. I've learned a lot about the destinations but that is secondary to the joy of having a whole week with these delightful young people.

The emphasis on inter-generational bonding is critical. Kids would tend to drift together if that expectation of spending time with their grandparents wasn’t stressed. Leaders did an excellent job of emphasizing the purpose of the trip which is to bond with your family members.

Wonderful trip with my grandson. The guides were flexible and able to accommodate necessary activity cancellations due to Hurricane Beryl. Grandparents beware, summer in Puerto Rico is no joke! The heat and humidity impacted us all and activities that probably would not have been as difficult for us old folks became much more so due to the conditions. Also, some of the activities were more strenuous than I expected (walking uphill in high heat in Old San Juan, climbing towers to zip line, walking uphill in the dark in El Yunque after a busy day) but overall everyone (especially the kids) enjoyed themselves. We had fun and learned a lot too!

I found the pace and activities were under rated. Many participants struggled somewhat or did not participate. Be prepared for the heat and humidity. Take at least 3 swimsuits and a beach towel and a water bottle and sunscreen a a rain jacket or light poncho. Really no free time opportunities to explore on your own. All that being said, the kids really enjoyed the swimming and snorkeling parts as well as the kayaking and ziplining.

Dear Patrick, In reviewing our post program evaluations the majority of our participants felt the activity level was accurately described. However, we understand that the weather and humidity at the time of the program can be a factor as well. We do also provide a full schedule while in Puerto Rico, since there is so much to see, and provide one afternoon of free time. We thank you for your feedback and will certainly take your comments into consideration for future departures. Sincerely, Road Scholar

Snorkeling & Wildlife: Puerto Rico With Your Grandchild was our first Road Scholar trip and our first trip with a grandchild. It exceeded our expectations and that of our grandchild. What a wonderful way to create a lifelong memory with your grandchild. We have two more grandchildren and look forward to taking a Road Scholar trip with each of them. We highly recommend Road Scholar and traveling with your grandchild.
