If you are looking for a program focused on outdoor adventures and natural beauty, this trip is for you. Highlights for me were the nature walks including early morning and night, the rafting trip, the Rafiki tents, and interactions with the locals. Carlos was an excellent guide.

What a fabulous trip we were privileged to take! Our guide, Katherine, was such a great addition. She was informative, organized, and had a great sense of humor. Costa Rica is beautiful and has so much wildlife that was easy to view. Friendly people were everywhere we traveled. A great experience and adventure!

The 3 Jewels of Costa Rica was a fabulous trip. Our group leader, Katherine Rojas, was the absolute best-- very knowledgeable, resourceful, fun, and organized. My trip highlights include: the coffee plantation, the Rafiki Lodge and rafting trip, and the visit to Manuel Antonio where the monkeys were abundant. The participants were a fun-loving group. Our driver Henry sets the standard on safety. I'd highly recommend this trip.

"Three Jewels" is such an apt description of this program! The variations in topography, vistas, climate, flora and fauna, birds, and animal life were a joy to experience. Rafiki Safari Lodge is a truly special place. Sleeping in a safari tent and whitewater rafting on the Savegre River were highlights of a fantastic trip!

This was our first RS trip and it was wonderful. Especially enjoyed the small group that allowed us to get to know our travel colleagues. Danny was an amazing guide, thoughtful, knowledgeable, and attentive. The bus was comfortable and accommodations what we expected (Savegre was a gem and Rfiki truly a special place. The only place that felt crowded was Manuel Antonio Park.

Wonderful experience. Not a single glitch, everything as smooth as could be. The guide was first rate. Personable and quite knowledgeable and patient. With us every waking hour. Details not evident to any but the most experienced were pointed out and explained. The accommodations were also perfect, The trip was highly informative, cloud forest, rainforest and coastal area, day and night adventures.
This trip is encouraged for anyone with any nature or environmental interest. It is not exceptionally strenuous, the walking portions are moderate and relaxed.

This was an amazing trip. My 3rd road scholar trip and our guide was absolutely TOP SHELF (Al) and our amazing driver (Eric), who navigated narrow gravel roads in our bus at times. My husband and I saw such amazing landscapes, birds, wildlife, experienced rafting and waterfalls, a "night walk" to see creatures; a coffee and vanilla plantation, and the highlight staying at the Rafiki Safari Lodge in a 'Glamping tent" for 2 nights in the tropical rain forest. We were there at the start of the rainy season, but the rains usually held off until afternoons; at which time, most of our scheduled activities occurred in the AM.
Definitely recommend this trip.

This trip to Costa Rica was more than I expected - educational, fun, great balance between planed activities and free time. Cloud Forest Hike and Rafiki Lodge experiences are not to be missed. Our tour leader Alvaro was excellent in all aspects and tour participants were fun, supportive and divers which made it even more interesting. A big shoutout also to our bus-driver Erick who was amazing in navigating traffic and challenging road conditions. I can highly recommend this well designed tour.

This was an amazing trip - very well organized and nothing missing, you just have to get to the airport. Road Scholar and the guide (Alvaro) take care of it all. And, Costa Rica is an incredible country and very much worth experiencing.

What an amazing adventure. I feel like I have just returned from another planet!
This is a perfect trip if you want to surround yourself with nature and engage in a
moderate amount of exercise and excitement. (Moderate hiking, white water rafting.)
Reimer Palma, our outstanding group leader and friend, seamlessly lead us through his beloved Costa Rica and facilitated our great group friendship.
This is a nature lover, photographer, and environmentalist's dream trip.
I particularly loved the 2 mountain destinations. The remote Rafiki Safari Lodge was a once in a lifetime stay for me.
Do not hesitate! Put Costa Rica: Three Jewels in Paradise on your travel calendar!!!!

This was an outstanding trip that had a 1) diverse intinerary, 2) great group of colleagues, and 3) phenomenal guide, Guillermo. First of all, the inital staging venue in San Jose is located central to top attractions (i.e., National Theater, top-notch museums, restautants, etc.) mostly which are within 2-5 blocks walking distance from the hotel (arriving a day early was a great decision to have time to oursleves to check out San Jose' before the program started). The three "Jewels" of Costa Rica are truely exceptional places: cloud forest (Savegre Valley), Rain Forest (Rafiki Safari Lodge-Savegre River), and ocean (Manuel Antonio National Park). All stops in between, including unique mountain lookouts, coffee plantation, places of cultural importance, and interactions with local residents, all enhanced our understanding of Costa Rica of yesterday, today and tomorrow. My wife and I felt the little details were handled well, especially, the timing and activities of stops during longer periods of traveling - all intentional. As in most orgnized activities, it's the leadership that makes the difference between ordinary and good versus extraordinary, and this program was no exception. Our guide, Guillermo, was exceptional - so professional. An educator, naturalist, historian, Costa Rican culture promoter, and part-time comic, Guillermo made great decisions when things were not falling perfectly into place, took us on short side trips when time permitted and was extremely client-focused.
And, now my wife and I have 14 new friends to share our travel expereinces with.
We highly recommend this tour.
— Review left March 23, 2025
The trip was similar to a trip through multiple United Sates National Parks, very much a nature centric experience. Similar to the US, the roads might not be the best and the Lodging may be a little rustic, but in order to explore the countryside you need to get off the main roads. Our guide was very good and helped make trip very enjoyable.

The Three Jewels of Costa Rica program was amazing! Being able to visit the cloud forest, the lowland jungle, and the Pacific rainforest areas was awesome. We got to experience different climates, flora, fauna, animals, and activities at each. Birding, hiking, whitewater rafting, walking in the jungle at night, and then ending at the beach made for a fabulous adventure in Costa Rica. Our guide, Alvaro, was AMAZING! Highly recommend the Three Jewels program!

Perfect trip to Costa Rica! Our guide, Katherine Rojas was amazing. I can't begin to describe her level of energy and positivity. She truly made this trip easy. Everything was expertly organized and went smoothly. Each hotel was perfectly situated and reflected the environment. The Rafiki Lodge is not to be missed! The rafting trip here was the perfect mix of challenging rapids and quiet floats for wildlife viewing. Our rafting guide, Kenneth, was like a river guru. Katherine would make impromptu stops along the way to view unexpected wildlife. We were very lucky to find the Resplendent Quetzal posing for perfect photos! The visit to a local's home and garden to see how he and his father were growing vanilla was very special. Thank you so much for a great experience!

We did the 3 Jewels in Paradise Trip to Costa Rica and had a rich experience, exploring different natural areas, seeing lots of wild life and floating down two rivers. We even had a typical meal prepared by a family at their own "ranchero", meaningful contact with the real culture.

This was my 20th Road Scholar trip. It did not disappoint. Everything we hoped for. Roger Melendez was a fabulous instructor and guide.
— Review left December 27, 2024
Roger was a wonderful guide! He really helped us understand the nature in and culture of Costa Rica. His presentations and those he arranged for us with others, were interesting, thought-provoking, and thorough. He happily made himself available beyond the basic program and always answered questions. As one of my cohorts said in our WhatsApp thread, Roger is truly a Costa Rican "national treasure"!
That said, the last hotel, the Wyndham near the airport, though on the surface was lovely, left much to be desired. The room we were in lacked a rod for the toilet paper to be on, such that the TP had to be on toilet tank OR on the counter and risk getting wet. In general the plumbing was funky: for example, it seemed as though there might be a leak emanating from the bottom of the tub. Also, the table service, particularly at our arrival dinner, was extremely poor. There weren't water pitchers on the table and nobody came around to refill the glasses that had been put out. Additionally, unless you got wine, nobody came around to offer a different beverage. After such amazing service at the other hotels, this was rather disappointing. One last funky thing: while not terribly important, when we used the game room, the pool table was in terrible shape! The pockets were broken so balls fell onto the floor, the (single) stick didn't have a tip, and the table was very uneven!
The only other lodging complaint: at the Trogon Lodge, which was at a high elevation, was quite chilly. That was OK, but it lacked hot water, so there was no way to warm up from the inside out.
Other than those things, the accommodations were generally very good and beyond what I expected.
Overall, it was an excellent trip and we will recommend Road Scholar to our friends, and may very well take additional trips with you.
Thank you for the excellent service!!

Five stars. This was an excellent program and guide and driver. The group size of 16 was perfect. Rafiki was the highlight. Some participants were challenged by the high heat and humidity in Rafiki and Manuel Antonio. The guided walks on this trip mostly emphasize birding and are very leisurely.

This is an absolutely wonderful program highlighting 3 very different zones of biodiversity. It utilizes a smaller bus in order to navigate the curves in the road. Our driver was such an expert and delightful. For one or two optional hikes we were glad to have the use of a walking pole. If you choose this program, you will learn so much about insects, mammals, birds, and plants. The places we stayed in were beautiful. Celo had great knowledge about all of it. It was equally important for us to hear from people who live here in Costa Rica, and we were able to throughout. We combined this program with a second one: The Best of Costa Rica. We feel absolutely enriched by both. And we have now a deep respect and admiration for the people here, and their care for their land and each other.

This program confirmed all the good things I have heard from others who have gone to Costa Rica. Road Scholar packed a wide range of experiences into a week of travel.. I was surprised by the amount of rain, but it did not hamper our enjoyment of the diversity of vegetation, animals and birds. Our expert guides worked hard to connect us to the key things we should see and educated us on what we were looking at. We had a wonderful small group and it was a joy to get to know all of them and share this experience with them. The Savegre Lodge and Rafiki Lodge were unique experiences adding greatly to the overall pleasure of this trip. We enjoyed the Costa Rican food, culture and people. Rafting the lower Savegre river was an exhilarating time with great guides.

Enjoyable balance of travel stops (5 lodging locations) over 9 days via travel van, seeing the beautiful fauna, flora and natural sights of western Costa Rica - which speak for themselves. There is something for everyone! Ultimate Glamping at Rafiki Safari Lodge, river rafting, birding (everywhere),Pacific Ocean sunset catamaran cruise. You will not go hungry with well planned 3 meals a day.

Just completed the small group tour Three Jewels of Costa Rica. Excellent experience. Organization was great from beginning to end. A great way to see the variety of environments that Costa Rica has to offer. Mountains to Mangroves, Birds to Beaches, with monkeys and sloths thrown in!

We absolutely loved this trip! We got to experience 3 very different ecosystems in a relatively small part of Costa Rica - amazing! Our guides (Pedro and Tomas) were warm, friendly, and knowledgeable and our driver (Rodrigo) was awesome and took such good care of us. Along with all the flora and fauna, we learned Costa Rican history and about conservation efforts. The food was so healthy and delicious. We are inspired to keep up this good eating at home. Overall, a wonderful experience!

What an incredible experience. We visited places off the beaten path. Met local families that are bringing Eco Tourism to life. Lots of action but also plenty of relaxation time. Saw unique and interesting wildlife. An amazing adventure.

Three Jewels in Paradise far exceeded my expectations. Our wonderful group leader, Jorge Mario Carballo, was enthusiastic, very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of his native Costa Rica, and attentive throughout the trip. This was my first ever Road Scholar trip and will not be the last. I loved experiencing ver different areas in the country, from urban San Jose to the mountains and jungle to the Pacific coast. We had the opportunity for excellent briding and hiking and enjoyed many great meals.

Wonderful overview of Coast Rica, a great program with lots of variety, loved staying in the Safari Tents, this is my seventh Road Scholar trip and I highly recommend it. The speakers were all excellent, our leader made the whole experience great. The small group with one great bus driver the whole time was a plus.

Website was ok but we needed to phone RS to get account set up properly for both of us..
That should have been an easier process considering most of your travelers are couples...

Flora and fauna galore! A great variety of topography and biomes. Bring your binoculars for excellent bird/animal watching, and dramamine for the twisty roads. Get ready to learn a LOT from Pedro, our Fearless Leader with encyclopedic knowledge of the natural world of Costa Rica.

Enjoyed Rafiki Lodge and Manuel Antonio. Lots of wildlife to see and few surprises along the way. Jorge our guide very knowledgeable and organized. Our driver Carlos the best we ever had! Would have liked a little more active days

Perfect intro to Costa Rica! Our guide Cristian was smart, funny, knowledgeable and candid on a wide variety of subjects and his ability to spot and get his scope on wildlife was uncanny. The 3 main locations we visited (Upper and Lower Savegre, Manuel Antonio) were all exceptional. The environmental, historical, social, and political information provided by Cristian and the other instructors was invaluable. This was our first RS trip, and we were pleasantly surprised by the camaraderie and compatibility of our group of 16.
