This Keeping the Pace program was fantastic. There were a variety of interesting things to do such as visiting the Philadelphia Flower Show, a classical orchestra concert at Kimmel, visits to 2 amazing local gardens (Winterthur and Longwood), a visit to the Art Museum, and the Barnes Foundation. There was a lot of walking, which is why it is classified as Keeping the Pace, although one lady with a walker was accommodated so she could participate, too.

Overall I really enjoyed this trip. The Philadelphia Flower Show did not live up to my expectations. The lighting on the major displays was woefully inadequate and there needed to be better traffic flow around the major displays. I think the Flower Show could use an infusion of new energy. The tour of Hagley was interesting but I did miss going to the Brandywine River Museum. Longwood Gardens was outstanding and our guide Amy was delightful. The box lunch was quite tasty. We were limited to one hour at the Barnes Foundation and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. I believe they were closed but opened especially for us and our guides for both were excellent, but it would have been nice to have had longer access. The Victor Cafe was a high point of the trip…so much fun…great entertainment and food! Our Tour Leader Warren did an excellent job of keeping us on schedule and that we got the best experience possible from every excursion.

I really enjoyed this trip. I went because I wanted to see the flower show and it definitely did not disappoint. But I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the other activities and the city of Philadelphia itself. I found the city to be very walkable and safe and loved the beautiful architecture. Visiting Longwood Gardens was a highlight for me.

So much packed into 2 1/5 days. Longwood Gardens, Flower Show, Concert, Four museums, and great food. Even though this group was large, it was handled well and things went smoothly. Want to return to Philly for another trip!

Christine – Class of 2008 | Rockville, MD
Excellent weekend! I went a day early to make sure I had enough time at the Flower Show and stayed an extra hour at Barnes to see the 2nd floor. Well conducted programs with excellent speakers (esp. docent at Philadelphia Museum of Art and John Bertram). Food was OK for a tour group. A bit confusing with two overlapping programs and two guides. One of guides was partial to her group. Highly recommend!

It was hard to find this program on the website. Once I found it it was hard to know just how to register. Filling out the pre-program electronic information sheet was tedious and difficult. Too many Road Scholar mailings come to us
