At a Glance

Set amidst thousands of acres of forest-covered hills, a pristine lake and near one of America’s most remarkable underground playgrounds, Trout Lodge is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise in the Ozarks. Join the outdoor staff to experience the natural history of the area on a hike, canoe Sunnen Lake and learn about aquatic ecology, try your hand at archery or riflery and take a pontoon ride on an underground lake. You can even learn about horses at the Triangle Y ranch and go for a ride. You’ll be amazed at all the activities so close!

General Notes

The Retreat Difference: This is a Road Scholar Retreats program. Our Retreat programs offer a tranquil respite from daily life in locales that lend themselves to outdoor exploration, reflection, or study. The accommodations may be basic in nature, but the facilities offer communal spaces to gather and to relax. During the week, opportunities usually exist for some combination of light exercise, a locally sourced meal, or evening entertainment. Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Passionate about riding horses since she was young, Melissa became an instructor with The Certified Horsemanship Association in both English and Western riding. Following the horse and ranch career path, she started out as a part-time wrangler at the Triangle Y Ranch and worked her way up to ranch director. She loves sharing her passion of horses and horsemanship skills with others. Melissa also holds a BS in animal science.

Check-in, Registration, Orientation, Welcome Dinner

Activity note: Arrive and check in beginning at 3:30pm. Snacks will be provided at Orientation. A welcome dinner will follow Orientation.

Afternoon: After you check in and have your room assignment, join us at the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff, get any updated information, and confirm the time and location of the Orientation session. If you arrive late, please locate your Group Leader and let them know you have arrived. Orientation: 4:30 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. We will review COVID-19 protocols and will adhere to local COVID-19 guidelines and requirements throughout the program. Meals will be in the Trout Lodge dining hall unless indicated otherwise. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The YMCA of the Ozarks-Trout Lodge includes a wide selection of activities and amenities, ranging from rec centers to workout facilities and hikes that vary based on the seasons. The Group Leader will be happy to review these opportunities and offer free time suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/current conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: Enjoy a buffet meal in the dining hall with savory choices, vegetarian, gluten free, soft drinks, tea, coffee, sweet treats and much more!

Evening: We will set out with our Group Leader to explore the campus of Trout Lodge and Camp Lakewood. We’ll learn a little about the history of the YMCA and how we go the name Trout Lodge.

Nature Hike, Onondaga Cave State Park

Activity note: Group will meet in the main lobby before heading to activity areas. Guests may be split into smaller groups to maximize the time and quality at each activity.

Breakfast: Hot buffet style breakfast also includes fresh fruit, breads, hot and cold cereals and pastries as well as coffees, teas and juices.

Morning: Take a guided 2 mile nature hike through the woods here on our 5200 acres.

Lunch: Hot buffet lunch including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices. Full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup. Many dessert options.

Afternoon: Travel to Onondaga Cave State Park for a cave excursion that includes beautiful formations and underground hiking.

Dinner: Hot buffet dinner including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices. Full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup. Many dessert options.

Evening: Karaoke - an opportunity to socialize and get to know each other better. Hot tea, coffee, and cookies will be available as well as some of your favorite songs to sing along with.

Activity note: We will meet in the lobby to go to activity areas - participants may be split into groups to maximize time at activities

Morning: Learn about natural cave systems we have on property while exploring our very own mud cave. Bring clothes you can dirty in!

Lunch: Hot buffet lunch including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices. Full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup. Many dessert options.

Afternoon: Archery and riflery lessons followed by over 2 hours of canoeing on Sunnen Lake learning about the history and exploring the Aquatic Ecosystems

Dinner: Hot buffet dinner including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices. Full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup. Many dessert options.

Evening: Barn Dance - Line dancing instruction with our professional ranch staff

Cold Springs Hike, Bonne Terre Mine, Free Evening

Activity note: Bus will depart at 12:15pm and return at dinner time. Must be able to walk down 60 stairs to enter the mine. Bring your camera as this is a sight to see!!

Breakfast: Hot buffet style breakfast also includes fresh fruit, breads, hot and cold cereals and pastries as well as coffees, teas and juices.

Morning: Hike through our beautiful forest ending by our natural cold springs before enjoying free time at our facility with more canoeing, archery or riflery.

Lunch: Hot buffet lunch including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices. Full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup. Many dessert options.

Afternoon: Enjoy a field trip to the well known Bonne Terre Mine. This is truly a natural wonder. We will hike through the mines as well as take a pontoon ride on the underground lake. This destination was voted as one of America's top 100 adventures.

Dinner: Hot buffet dinner including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices. Full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup. Many dessert options.

Evening: We will finish on the evening with an ice cream social! Hang out and enjoy the company of your fellow guests around some delicious ice cream with all the toppings.

Activity note: Today will require closed toed shoes. You will get muddy and wet while exploring the mud cave located here on property.

Breakfast: Hot buffet style breakfast also includes fresh fruit, breads, hot and cold cereals and pastries as well as coffees, teas and juices.

Morning: Enjoy a ride on our 50 foot zip line. This is quite a thrill. You will also learn a bit about horses down at the Triangle Y Ranch as we visit the stables and enjoy a peaceful ride.

Lunch: Hot buffet lunch including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices. Full salad bar with fresh fruit and soup. Many dessert options.

Afternoon: Enjoy a local winery including a guided talk from the owners, beautiful scenery and a wine tasting!

Dinner: In the Meeting Rooms, enjoy a catered dinner with a salad, choice of two entrées, assorted side dishes, and dessert. Water, iced tea, coffee and hot tea are included.

Evening: Campfire with s'mores under the stars followed by an Astronomy lesson.

Morning: Enjoy a relaxing morning, play a round of mini golf or try more activities such as archery, riflery or more canoeing. Say goodbyes to your new friends with one last classroom period viewing a slideshow of pictures from the week.

Lunch: Hot buffet lunch with salad bar. Menu varies. and has vegetarian, gluten free choices, assorted beverages, sweet treats, etc.

Afternoon: Program concludes. Free time available to use YMCA Trout Lodge after check-out for all participants. Do some of the activities that you wanted to do but didn't get the chance.
