I thoroughly enjoyed this program! I have nothing to compare it to but I think our guide, Edwin Ongori, was the main reason I loved it so much. He was full of knowledge about everything and did not hesitate to answer any questions we had. I tell everyone we talk to about this program that they need to do it! It was very fun, educational and humbling.

An amazing experience that far exceeded our expectations! Edwin, our study leader, readily shared his vast knowledge of African wildlife. Edwin and our drivers were eager for us to see as many animals as possible and patiently waited as we took our many pictures. We were fortunate in that we saw animals that are rarely seen like a striped hyena, a civet cat and a serval cat. We visited local villages learning about their customs, traditions and history. I've traveled to many parts of the world and this was by far the best tour yet.

We just returned from the Kenya & Tanzania Experience and it was undoubtedly the experience of a lifetime. We had a fantastic group of 10, visited many incredible places, got close to so many animals and had great accommodations. We also highly recommend you get with our guide, Mulonzi Kinyanzui. This tour was one of the best travel experiences I've ever had. I thought we'd see some animals, but little did I know we would see thousands and many of them very close to our jeeps! The leader of our trip was excellent and the lodgings were all unique and fabulous! Our last nights we slept to the sound of hippos in the river nearby! Fabulous all the way around.

This safari tour of Kenya and Tanzania was the trip of a lifetime! We spotted all of the “big five” including five rhinos grazing together. Our visit to the school was an eye opener. One teacher handling 81 students ranging in age from six to thirteen years old. The happy children needed new uniforms and the teachers could use more instructional material. We visited several tribal villages and learned so much about the culture they have managed to preserve. Well done Road Scholar on your 50th anniversary; you opened our eyes to some of the East African culture!

Top-notch outing. All aspects were very organized. The micro group is a definite plus - we had a great group of 12 who got along very well. After the tour, we set up a WhatsApp messaging group to keep in contact and share pictures and thoughts.

This is an outstanding trip, made of one exhilarating experience after another. From game sightings to village visits, we found the whole thing to be quite magical. The memories of the bumpy roads are fading already, and the memories of the animals will last forever. One thing I worried about was whether I needed a nice camera, and I got thoroughly wonderful photos just using my phone. So don’t sweat the camera, if your phone camera is decent!

Our guide Philip Rono was the best. This was a fantastic experience from beginning to end. I saw so much and experienced so much. It was incredible. There are tons of wild animals to see in their natural habitat. And yes, the roads are really bad but our drivers were great.

This trip was amazing!!! Our guide, Seif, was extremely knowledgeable, compassionate, welcoming, helpful and made sure everyone had a great experience.
Everything was well planned and executed throughout the tour. Hotel accommodations were spectacular, food was phenomenal, and customer service throughout was exceptional! My favorite accommodation was the Naona Moru Camp. The staff paid extra attention to detail to make our stay comfortable and fun. The food was delicious!!
I recommend this experience to everyone, and I will definitely travel with Road Scholar again.

This program is life changing, every day was the BEST day. The lodges were all unique in their own way, clean, culturally rich and the food was always amazing. The highlight was having a local guide who grew up there and was extremely knowledgable in both the animals and culture. Our guide Tito, was happy, patient, and an excellent listener and can spot animals from a distance, even in their camoflauge. These two weeks in Africa will go down as my favorite place in the world, and Road Scholar's itinerary was exceptional.

This trip was absolutely amazing. Everything from the guides, activities, culture, food, and beautiful landscape of Eastern Africa surpassed my expectations. Tom, our guide, was so informative. He taught us all so much, kept us busy, problem solved, and he did it all with a smile on his face. We also were so lucky to stay at a beautiful camp/hotel every night. Each location excelled in hospitality and really made you feel welcome. We also had spectacular safari drives that went out of their way in located animals and helping us get a great photograph. They were also able to teach us so much about the wildlife and climate. Overall, this program was life changing. I would highly recommend it.

This is a truly amazing trip. The daily animal drives, the interaction with the Maasai people, a hot air balloon over the Maasai Mara and the canoe ride on Lake Victoria were all very enjoyable and educational.
Our guide Seif Mohammed was remarkable. He shared his vast knowledge daily and was known and respected everywhere we went.
The timing of this trip is very critical, however. Our trip, taken late August-early September was well into the dry season. As a result, the roads were beyond dusty and seriously bumpy. If you have any back issues, this trip is not recommended. In addition, if you are intending on seeing the Wildebeest migration, we were 4-5 weeks late and did not see it. We simply were too late and chose the wrong weeks. We should have gone earlier, early July thru mid August would have been better.

Trip of a lifetime.Seif,our guide has been fantastic,guiding us in and out of all the myriads of places to be, using his local connections and knowledge to get us there when the time and place was best.
For example it was Seif, thru his friendship with the Ranger, was able to get us to see the last of the 3 white rhinos- including a baby-at the Gnoloronon Crater, an unforgettable moment,unique and not available to the public.
It was thru his effort that we stayed in rooms which faced the crater rather than the road, at the Serena Lodge.
He also got us early onto the crater floor( through his knowledge) and when others where just arriving or still having breakfast, we already had seen 3 baby lion cubs, lionesses,hippos,and a wildebeest migration.
By his effort alone,(not open to the general public)he got us to the actual site where Mary Leakey discovered the bones of early man.
Thru his efforts we stayed in lakeside rooms at the Speke Bay on Lake Victoria, rather than other not so great rooms.
He made sure that border crossings occurred when the crowds were not there,fascilliating luggage thru customs and with our passport agents. Hard became effortless and easy allowing us to focus on the beauty of the land people and animals.
It was he alone who, sensing and with past knowledge of the cheetah allowed us to witness a mother cheetah with her cubs in tow,in a burst of amazing speed, kill a gazelle. Other guides with their groups where a mile away where she had crossed the road with her cubs, and when those guides realized a kill was happening, it was all over.
The list goes on of memories indelibly printed in my mind, but the bottom line is this: because of Seif I will be wedded to future travels with Road Scholars,and when I return on safari to Africa,my number one priority will not be the time of year, but when will Seif be guiding the trip.
He is a treasure to be carefully protected and respected, with so much knowledge of all aspects of Africa.

This program was excellent. The game drives were successful - we saw the Big 5 and many other species too. The accommodations and food were more than adequate since we were staying in the bush. The cultural experiences - village visits - were great too. We had a good group of fellow travelers and a very knowledgeable leader in Edwin Ongori.

This trip was the most incredible and life-changing experience. It was a perfect blend of safari game drives - where we managed to see up close all the animals - and so many fascinating cultural experiences. We had a small group of nine, who quickly became a family. Our guide, educators and drivers were exceptionally knowledgable, and the accommodations far exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend it to everyone!

This adventure exceeded my very high expectations! We were able to see the Big Five plus many other animals and birds. Amazing to visit so many of the national parks! The lodgings were all exceptional. I especially enjoyed the three safari camps which were so luxurious and such a fun experience! We were very fortunate to have Edwin Ongorio as our guide. He is a walking encyclopedia of all things related to animals, plants, culture, history and geography! Edwin was very attentive to every detail that would make our trip more meaningful, comfortable and fun. It was abundantly clear that he loves both Kenya (his home) and Tanzania and wanted to share that with each of us.

Overall, it was an excellent trip filled with many new sites and experiences. I didn’t like the shopping excursions on the trip. The leader was very knowledgeable and handled a number of difficult situations that came up with our group.
If anyone asks about the once in a lifetime trip, I will respond positively except for one detail that will most likely stop me from participating in any future Road Scholar’s trips. Although the other participants were for the most part very positive, I found it very difficult to be the only male participant out of 12 total. The subjects of the daily conversations for hours in the jeeps, at lunches and dinners, and during down times very tiring to listen to.
I expected more of a balance between male and female participants…more couples. Without a balanced group (male and female), count me out.

This was such an amazing experience! Road Scholar packed so many experiences into a two week tour. Our group leader, Alfred, provided us with a wonderful booklet, My Safari Journal, that was packed with information about our itinerary, history, interesting facts about the countries we were visiting, Swahili words and phrases, and more. This journal gave us a place to record the animals and birds and our experiences throughout the trip. Our driver guides, including Sidiq, Armani, Sammy, and others were not only professional drivers, but knowledgeable about animals, trees, history and made our travels truly memorable. Our lodgings were all top notch with great food. Seeing all of the wild animals on our safari drives was amazing, but what I will remember the most is the people of Kenya and Tanzania who were so welcoming and friendly.
Although some of the roads were very rough and bumpy, it wasn't as bad as I expected. I am a 78 year old solo traveler and I did not find the trip to be too strenuous. The most difficult part was getting into and out of the safari vehicle, but our drivers provided step stools and assisted so that I felt safe. Restroom stops were not as bad as I expected and we only had to use the "bush" one time because the restrooms were locked. You should definitely take tissues with you.
If you are thinking about visiting Africa, this is a great first trip. I hope it's not my last.

Road Scholar planned a spectacular trip with a great choice of countries, diversity of environments, exposure to cultures and history and great accommodations, all offering delicious meals, and gracious hospitality.
The safari drivers educated us about the differing environments we were in, the plant and animal life we observed and enriched our experience by the stories and information they shared about the differing animals and their uniquenesses and their behaviors. This allowed us to be present to the wildlife rather than just observe and photograph it. They were keen observers, spotting an inordinate amount of wildlife we were able to discover, much more than we anticipated.
The small group size was an added benefit.
We KNOW how fortunate we are to have had Martha as our gifted guide on this spectacular trip. She was a very grounded and peace-filled woman which set the tone for our whole group.
Martha was alert to our individual needs and concerns and was resourceful and gracious in addressing them, assuring all were comfortable and included in everything throughout the trip.
Her compassion and love for people define her as well as her sense of humor. She made the trip fun!
Martha is a brilliant guide, sharing from her education and varied life experiences and her passion for life-long learning. Her photography reflects her sense of wonder and awe in what she captures and that is what she instilled in those of us who traveled with her. She encouraged us to see beyond each animal, bird or reptile to their relationships and the story they tell. She inspired us to see the more.
Martha gave clear information and directions, giving us the information we needed for each day or each event. She did not create confusion but rather was assured we all understood what to expect, the time and place we needed to be and what we could anticipate at each moment.
It was an amazing trip! Thank you Road Scholar and Martha, especially.

Our experience on the Best of Kenya & Tanzania program was excellent. You'll never watch PBS 'Nature' again the same way because you will have BEEN THERE. Once you are in country and rolling across the countryside you will stop thinking about how much you spent to get there or the cost of the program. For what you're getting it's a very fair price. The only HUGE problem was using the Road Scholar 'travel agency.' They did absolutely nothing to help us with our problems with the reservations they made for us with Turkish Airlines and Turkish Airlines created. So, my feedback is, go on as many Road Scholar programs as you can, but make your own travel arrangements.

This experience was as advertised--the trip of a lifetime! Loved the small group experience, and our leader (Edwin Ongori) was wonderful. The people in our group were open to learning and adaptable, and pleasant. Each accommodation was unique and very comfortable. The food was plentiful, varied and delicious. There was always plenty of safe water available for drinking, brushing teeth, etc. The trip is rated as "Keep the Pace" because of the long days, early mornings, and very rough and dusty surfaces--all accurate descriptions. So, while you don't really have many chances to walk around, there is a lot of getting in and out of the safari vehicles, and a lot of bouncing. Some reviews that suggested bringing blow-up cushions to sit on, so I bought some, but the seats were fine and we never used them. We brought bandanas and masks, and found them helpful to ward off the dust. We brought the amount of money/denominations that was suggested in the RS materials, and it was plenty. We brought wide-brimmed hats, but had no real use for them--a ball cap would have been better. It was chilly in the mornings, especially at Ngorongoro, so our fleece vests were welcome. "Dress like an onion" was good advice--it can get quite warm by the afternoon, and then it cools off when the sun goes down. We found our safari shirts with roll-up sleeves to be a good option. Didn’t bring shorts, and never needed them. Slip-off shoes for the vehicle are a must if you are short, so you can stand on the seat to see.
Edwin was very good at finding us places to stop and "check tires" (use the restroom) at reasonable intervals. Good to have some tissues with you in case no TP was available at the stops out in the field. Edwin was good at sensing when we might need a break (the days were very full) and made adjustments accordingly. The trip was a perfect mix of viewing animals and birds, and cultural experiences.

This was an AMAZING trip! The landscape in the parks and conservancies is beautiful. Seeing the wildlife close up in Ngorongoro, the Serengeti, and everywhere, was breathtaking. Our group of 10 "clicked" and from my perspective we were all taken aback by the wonderment we saw with each new day. The cultural experiences helped us understand the lives of Kenyans and Tanzanians. The people are joyous, grateful, and inspirational. Our guide, Edwin Ongori, was incredible! We peppered him with questions all day. His decades of experience, and his knowledge about the animals, the terrain, the plant life and the people, is unbelievable. In addition, he coordinated all the moving parts of our many activities and attended to every detail. His demeanor was warm and welcoming, and he set the tone for this awe-inspiring trip.

There were only 10 of us, perfect for game drives using 2 Land Cruisers. The guide was exceptional and the other Scholars were fun to be with and ready to learn. We saw the big 5 and much more. Be prepared for long days and very rough roads and trails.

This bucket list trip far exceeded my high expectations. Our leader, Philip Bono, was an encyclopedia of African knowledge and has the eye of an eagle at finding well camouflaged wildlife. Ecologically, culturally, politically, and historically; this trip was eye-opening and truly amazing.

This was a wonderful trip full of memorable experiences. If you want to see huge herds of elephants with a view of Kilimanjaro in the background, that's what we saw at Amboseli National Park. We checked off several bucket list items on this trip: Kilimanjaro in the morning, Ngorongoro Crater with big animals and small, the great rift valley, Olduvai gorge if you're into human history-see where Mary Leakey discovered Lucy, the vast Serengeti where we discovered the mass migration of wildebeest and zebras. Then on to the Masai Mara where we saw lions on a cape buffalo kill, leopards, cheetahs and our lodge overlooked a river full of hippos. On top of all that, we had many encounters with the local people which satisfied our desire for cultural enrichment. Loved it

The Safari to Kenya and Tanzania exceeded my expectations. Saw the big five and much, much more. The beauty of Kenya and Tanzania was outstanding. From the Savanna’s to being on the rim of a volcano that had imploded (most beautiful natural sight I’ve ever experienced), to the children at school and individuals in their particular living environment. The Road Scholar planning and logistics were outstanding. My first trip with Road Scholar was to Cuba. Both adventures well planned, guides who understood the logistics and made the trips seem effortless. On this trip Philip Rono was our guide. Philip was funny, helpful, knowledgeable, experienced and made the trip seem effortless. However behind the scenes he made it happen flawlessly. Also kudos to our drivers, driving in Nairobi (crazy) and on safari. They handled the vehicles on safari safely and were also very knowledgeable about the animals, fauna and history of our adventure. I initially didn’t have this trip on my bucket list, now I tell everyone this is a must in your life! Cheers to adventure!

The trip was a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. Our guide, Mulanzi (also known as Tom) was absolutely fantastic! He was organized, efficient, helpful, and knowledgable. He kept our group moving and he always had a smile on his face. I can't say enough good things about Mulanzi - He was FABULOUS. I absolutely loved all of the activities on the trip and it was even better than I could have ever imagined. We saw so many different animals, had so many different cultural experiences, and learned so much about the people, tribes, landscape, etc. of Kenya and Tanzania. I feel that I really got to know this part of Africa. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who has a curiosity about this part of the world. It was simply amazing! BRAVO!!

The Road Scholar trip to Kenya and Tanzania from November 2-17, 2024 was an outstanding experience. Our tour guide Phillip, was fun and kept us going with many stories and facts that kept our interest peeked as a group. Most importantly, we all kept the pace!
Our accommodations were perfect, as the different tents and huts matched each unique experience from Kenya to Tanzania. I want to thank Road Scholar of thinking of everything! The comfortable accommodations before our flight back home was exceptionally thoughtful. The food was delicious and complemented the experience.
Combining the Safari (that included the big FIVE) and the cultural experiences with the native population gave me an unexpected love and a great respect for the part of Africa I experienced.
I traveled alone and was matched with another single female traveler. We became friends enjoying the journey of our African Road Scholar trip with many shared memories.

I have just returned from the Kenya/Tanzania safari (Oct 26-Nov 10); it was simply 'perfect'. Our guide 'Tom" (Mulonzi Kinyanzul) made the two weeks easy, comfortable, fun and informative. He provided an historical, social and cultural context for both countries that helped our understanding; as well as being a fountain of information on all the flora and fauna. He was comfortable with all the questions we asked and even arranged for a special speaker on a topic we asked for.
The lodgings and their staff were so friendly and helpful. And always good bathroom breaks! In November, the mosquitos were not a problem although we used spray in the evenings to be cautious. Having been on a safari before, I just brought my summer clothing (vs new outfits from LL Bean) and they worked fine. One of the best things we can do as tourists is to buy; and to bring school supplies or make a donation. That and an interest in and respect for a different culture in an amazing part of this world You will not be disappointed - and ask for Tom!!

Our experience in East Africa reflected the excellent Road Scholar reputation that calls us to return again and again. We treasured the quality of the African safari, cultural and historical experience with exceptional historian and guide Alfred Mutai. The micro group of 12 wonderful traveling participants, quickly became friends. The pace of each day was well planned and flowed into the next with wonder and joy. We saw many animals in 4 different parks, each with different animal habitat and relationships. Our appreciation of the deep East African traditions of the people and their animal world connection grew with each experience through our knowledgable Land Cruiser guides, guests speakers, unique lodging and incredible food. The welcoming and affirming East African culture through human interaction was honorable, respectful and humbling. Everyone made it a life changing experience that we will share with others and never forget. Note: This amazing experience includes frequent dusty, rough road travel eased with a mask or scarf and inflatable cushion.

Stunning array of animals from close up to vast numbers. The unique accommodations added to the experience as did the superb food. Our understanding of the countries expanded through lectures and visits to villages, museums and galleries. Also enjoyed the two plane and one canoe trips. Take US $ in 5s, 10s for very inexpensive purchases or tips. Totally mind-blowing.

This is a fantastic program! The combination of safari drives and cultural experiences gave us a greater understanding of East Africa. Exploring the many, varied accommodations added to the adventure! Even the "tent camps" provided us with everything we needed, including Wifi (sometimes limited) at all sites. An excellent adventure! We saw so many animals and could actually get great up-close pictures using an iPhone. Our guide, Alfred, was extremely knowledgeable and our drivers: Allen, Abu, and Abdi were great drivers and very knowledgeable about the people and animals, too. Yes, safaris were bumpy (not as bad as I expected though) and dusty. Bathroom breaks were not a problem - you can drink your coffee and water. Our accommodations were outstanding! Views from rooms were amazing - nothing like seeing an elephant, giraffe, or hippo outside your tent. Not only did I learn about the animals, but the people of Kenya and Tanzania too. This trip delivered so much more than I expected (and I expected a lot). We visited many places and changed lodging often and I was amazed and delighted at how smoothly and effortlessly we moved from place to place. The service was exceptional, the food was really excellent, and our guide, James (Kiptoo) was incredibly organized, talented, knowledgeable, fun, and efficient. I was also impressed at the knowledge our drivers had about the game parks and reserves we visited. Together with our guide they found animals for us to see that we had no idea were close by.
We were lucky to see all of the big 5 in our travels through Kenya and Tanzania. We made an acronym "BELL-R" to "pass" one of Kiptoo's "tests." (Buffalo, Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino)
Transiting between Kenya and Tanzania was straightforward. I do recommend that if you have a Yellow Fever waiver you make sure to keep it for the whole trip. You will need it twice.
Finally, take the hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara. It offers a spectacular vantage point for wildlife of all kinds.
Bring your camera and binoculars!

My husband and I had a great 2-week safari vacation in September, 2024. The Tour Director, Mr. Philip Rono, was highly informative and did a fabulous job of herding a tour group of 12 of all different ability levels. We had two drivers for most of the trip, Sande for the first 3 days in Kenya, and then Amos in Tanzania - both of whom provided a wealth of information. Sande, in particular, was a most knowledgeable gentleman who provided commentary around nature, birds, government, social customs, education, and much, much more as we drove. And Amos deserves an award for his superb driving on the roads of the Serengeti.
All lodgings were nice, each with its own strengths. Eka Hotel - the first stop on the way - was pleasantly surprising - upscale and modern, with comfortable beds, and impeccable cleaning of both the rooms and common areas. The only lodging I did not find as comfortable was the final stop at Fig Tree Camp. This would have been perfect except that the tents are a mere 12-15' apart. You hear everything in your neighbor's tent, and if someone is whooping it up with their friends, or talking loudly on a cell phone, you hear all of it. Compared to every other location which had some aspect of privacy, this was a big disappointment. The management at Fig Tree, however, did accommodate our request to move to a different tent for the second night due to the partying of the family in tents to either side of us - blasting loud music after 10 p.m. and consistently being loud and inconsiderate. I would suggest that Road Scholar look at camps with more intimate settings in the Masai Mara, or at least with better spacing between tents. Another thing to be aware of is that Fig Tree is undergoing some significant repair work right now, due to the flood that took out a lot of the river banking in places. So there are men working during the day and it can get relatively loud. Note: 33 lbs weight limit does NOT include carry-on.

This program was AMAZING! The Tour Leader, Mulonzi was simply fantastic. He had great time management, professional, compassionate, friendly and always had a smile on his face. Visiting Amboseli, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and Massai Mara National Parks is beyond description as far as the wildlife we saw. The drivers and guides were great, especially Boniventura and Boko which we spent all of our time in Tanzania with. The lodges and camps were very nice and the staff that worked there were very kind and friendly. I was a bit nervous about staying in the tent camps but it turned out to be very fun to hear the animals at night and we always had escorts after dark. The food and hospitality was terrific everywhere throughout the program. Most everyone spoke English, so it very easy to communicate. The Cultural experience of visiting a local primary school, Maasai Village and the Medicine Man were all extremely interesting and enriching. The days were long and bumpy rides and it was worth it 100%! Only having 12 people in the program gave us all an opportunity to get to know each other and share this wonderful experience. We saw the "Big 5" and other animals and birds every single day. I was very excited to go on this program and it even exceeded my expectations.

A picture taking safari had been on my "bucket list" for decades." This trip was everything I had hoped it would be and far exceeded my expectations. I had never slept in a tent in all of my 77 years, so I was nervous about the experience, which was more like "glamping." Hearing the lions, baboons and hyenas at night was life changing. This is a fantastic program! The animals are amazing!! Definitely, a once in a lifetime trip! All of the accommodations are great. There is an incredible amount of learning, both about the animals and the culture of the people. Edwin is an incredible guide, and I highly recommend signing up for one of his dates. The roads are bumpy and dusty. (Think off-road four wheeling at times.) Consider bringing a mask or a light weight neck gaiter to filter out some of the dust. This trip was designed with care and detail (and flexibility) while turning out to be a wonderful combination of natural and cultural experiences for me. I was most surprised and excited about how much I learned: how people live, move, and act, smatterings of tribal languages and swahili, tribal coexistence, challenges of African nations, the complex legacies of colonization, African nations' place, aspirations among the other nations in the world. This trip enlarged my worldview and understanding of my own place in it. I was most impressed at the depth and breadth of knowledge of our guide Edwin Ongori who was able to give detail from multiple disciplines: history, biology, ornitology, geography, geology, anthropology, linguistics, religions. This trip was masterfully, organized and guided by Road Scholar and leader James Kiptoo. Kudos to him for managing the day to day so well.
The parks are incredible and the game drivers and Kiptoo worked to make sure we experienced as many of the animals and opportunities of each setting. Accommodations and food offerings were stellar, as were the lectures. Participants would benefit from lecturers and game drivers having microphones to ease the listening. But we really benefitted from each.
Visas can be a bit complicated, and we may have benefitted from a bit more instruction early. Also, the weight and luggage instructions could be made more clear to understand that the hand baggage is not included in the weight limitations.
The game drives are amazing. Given that game drives happen early and late in the day, participants may benefit from a bit more downtime to process all the things one is sure to experience, and allow for more energy to really take in the lectures and walks.
The stops and learnings are excellent, but do have a heavy shopping orientation, and can be difficult when no prices are provided. Difficult to understand what is market-value in each place. We loved the Maasai village visit, but suggest fewer vendors and more conversation about their crafts.
Overall… Two thumbs up. Warm people, great learnings, beautiful accommodations and excellent leadership. Thank you for this amazing adventure.

This is a wonderful trip, full of dusty, bumpy road trips in a safari vehicle that took us right up to the animals we came to see! Loved it. Our main guide was with us all the way and was patient, informative and very knowledgable about . . . well . . . everything. And we also had guides who drove us through each park -- Amboseli, with its views of Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro, the Serengeti, and Maasai Mara. Each visit seemed to have even more animals, big and small. The accomodations and food were fantastic, even our "tent" in the Serengeti, and everywhere we went the staff were welcoming and friendly. Yes, you have to be flexible (you are on another continent!), and there are many early starts, but there is so much to see -- the only way to see all of it is to get out there, so I really have no complaints. I took the extra balloon ride in Maasai Mara and that was great, too. The different perspective from the air was thrilling.

An amazing, fascinating, interesting trip - all kinds of wild animals in their natural habitats, some up very close, interesting talks and cultural visits, comfortable unique accommodation and a fantastic group leader. The Toyota Landcruisers were comfortable and good for wildlife viewing, although they do bump a lot on long unpaved road journeys between destinations. Toilet stops were as frequent as we needed, better than we had been warned. Visa application through the Tanzanian and Kenyan e-application was cheap and not hard to do ourselves.

Fantastic experience. A really wonderful program. Be ready for early starts and long days but the rewards for those long days are memories for a life time. We saw the big 5 close up and so much more. Every day was an adventure. Our guide, Eddie Ongori, was absolutely fabulous. So many highlights including close encounters with a Black Rhino and baby, a Leopard with kill in a tree, Cheetahs, Elephants and Lions close up and so much more. Accommodation and food were great. Laying in our tent listening to the animals at night was so exciting. It's hard to pick my favorite camp but I think the 2 nights at Naona Moru deep in the heart of the Serengeti wins the prize. We're seasoned travelers but this was our first safari and first time using Road Scholar. We'll be back for sure. Unforgettable.

This is a fabulous program and superseded my expectations. There are a few recommendations I would make to people about to take this adventure. Bring a washcloth if you like to use one as many of the lodges did not provide them. There is no need to buy "safari clothes" or to limit your wardrobe to tan and sage green as you are almost always in a vehicle when you encounter animals. Many of my fellow travelers wore bright colors and this was fine. You really do need to bring a water bottle on this trip. Many programs tell us to bring them and they are not needed; not true here. Believe the warning that there are hours of driving over bumpy, umpaved roads. I did not mind this, but some travelers did somewhat. There were also sufficient potty breaks on all drives, as opposed to the warning that there would not be.

Our only complaints relate to the overly specific RS direction for submitting Visa applications for Kenya and Tanzania: (1) the specifications for personal photos seemed to require 2x2 paper photos, but selfies turn out to be just fine, (2) information on local contacts in Kenya and Tanzania were stated to be required for Visa applications, but they were not (maybe the visa service added them); (3) the Visa service ended up applying for both Visas based on information we provide only for the Kenya visa (all our time completing the Tanzania visa applications was wasted). The visa application process was aggravating and took a fair amount of our time so any simplification would be greatly beneficial to future RS travelers.

My trip to Kenya and Tanzania was life-changing in small and large ways. Yes, I went to see the wildlife and it was indeed spectular. However, I also learned a great deal about prehistory, culture, food, habitat, tourism, geography, kindness, responsibility, etc. Many of these lessons came to me through fellow, more experienced, travelers- veterans of many and varied other Road Scholar programs. Amazing experience. Our guide Washington Washira was professional, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. All of our accommodations were first class as were our travel arrangements. The variety of lodgings were part of the fun - from glamming tents in the bush to a lodge perched on the side of a crater to a room on the shore of Lake Victoria and all within close proximity to the animals and scenery we had come to see.
One of our travel companions took ill and had to remain behind in Ashura. Road Scholars and Washington took excellent care of her while not holding up the rest of the tour. We did see the big 7 and scores of other animals and birds. Many of the roads were undeveloped and this of course led to bumpy travels. Extra padding - a seat cushion - is not a bad idea to bring along.

This was an outstanding program. Alfred is an excellent guide and group leader who made the experience even more meaningful. All the drivers we had were excellent, but Muba was great although it would be good if he added more cushions to his safari vehicle. The “roads” are very dusty and bumpy and the time in the vehicle is long. October is before the start of the rainy season. You need no cold weather cloths nor are the bugs a problem anywhere we were. Don’t load up on bug spray. Parts of the trip are having significant drought and climate change problems are evident. I rate this program five stars. It is well with the long plane rides.

This African photo safari will change your world view! The number and variety of animals that you will see will astound you, but the culture may change your life. See what teachers there can accomplish with so little and how the traditional Maasai are maintaining their culture while also having their children go to school and make different choices. I suggest that you read some of the books in the recommended reading because they will give you context for what you see and do. This program has very little walking, mostly just in the camps, but it isn't suitable for people who can't physically handle hours of very bumpy off-road truck riding almost every day.

This was the best vacation I’ve ever taken. This Road Scholar tour exceeded our expectations in every way. All of our guides were thoroughly knowledgeable and the lodges were all first class. The sheer abundance of wildlife is mind boggling—no place in the lower 48 states compares! The game drives in Toyota Land Cruisers were at times very rugged and not for the faint of heart, but that’s part of the appeal. I was awestruck by the magnificence of East African wildlife in their own natural habitat.

What an amazing program! We saw animals in the thousands, including up close encounters with lions, cheetahs, leopards, and elephants. Staying in tented camps provided a real feeling of being on safari. Edwin, our group leader was excellent, and shared his extensive knowledge of the nature and culture. I had high expectations, which were met and exceeded, and would definitely recommend this program to anyone who wants to experience an East African safari.

I highly recommend this trip for those with a sense of adventure and a good back, and strong arms for holding on during the jolting, bumpy, long Jeep rides. You need the ability to climb in & out of a high Jeep. Trip of a lifetime—with plenty of animals within 25-50 feet of the vehicle! My guide was extremely knowledgeable, full of fun facts, and he took care of details when my travelling partner, my brother, caught Covid early in the trip. I chose to stay at the hotel, and take care of my brother for 4 days, then was able to rejoin the Safari. My brother rejoined us for the last 3 days of the trip. (trip insurance is essential and emergency cash).
Begin your shots 6 months ahead, as some shots require multiple vaccinations. (was able to get my shots at Costco). Bring money in a thick envelope, and plenty for emergencies. Make sure money doesn’t have a deep crease and no tiny tears or else many vendors will not accept it. AND you need a PIN number for your credit card for the ATM and for some vendors. Tips: dress in layers of quick-dry clothing, extra medicines in case you catch Covid, anti-diarrhea meds, bug spray (very few bugs), sunscreen, a point & shoot camera (worked just great for photos, large lens not needed). I felt very safe with my guide and driver at the lodgings, camps, and game drives.

I have wanted to go to Africa since I was a kid, and it was worth the wait to go with Road Scholar. The trip was so much more than I hoped and expected. Words cannot express how fantastic the experience was--the organization, itinerary, logistics, our study guide, other participants, and, of course, all of the amazing animals and scenery we saw. Absolutely awesome! 10 stars! So happy I went! After 3 years of waiting, (having been cancelled twice) this trip was more than I expected or hoped for. The wildlife was incredible - especially observing them in their native habitat. Be willing to rise early for morning games drives and eat dinner late - 7 PM or later, after the late afternoon drive. Most of the roads are NOT paved - be prepared. We had daily 'African massage' courtesy of the washboard and bumpy roads. Advice: 1 - If you have back issues, either think twice before attempting this trip OR take a thick seat cushion w/ a tailbone cutout. I was grateful each day that I did. Still, the game drives were bumpy - often bouncing up from the seat. 2 - If you are short, 5'5" or less, take a pair of slip on shoes for the game drives, as only sock feet should be used when standing on the seats in the safari vehicles to see out the top. 3 - If you are a former educator, you may be overcome by the stop at a rural Primary school, if it is in session. Consider packing some basic supplies such as pencils/colored pencils/crayons/composition books, etc. to leave with them. I wish I had known this was an option. 4 - US dollars may be used, however, newer, small denomination bills are best since you are likely to do some bargaining.
June/July is the dry season 'winter' for Kenya/Tanzania. Morning/evenings may be chilly , but daytime highs were nice. Since it is the dry season, there is much more dust from the roads. You will get dusty! Bugs are fewer, except near water bodies (Lake Victoria especially). All the accommodations were lovely! The tent camps (or should I say 'glamps') were my favorites, especially the one way out in the middle of nowhere in the Serengeti - a completely tented 'glamping' camp. If you have ever dreamed of an African safari - this is your trip! My count: 25 different animal species/sub-species and 31 bird species.

My trip to Kenya and Tanzania was an unforgettable experience. Our group leader, drivers, the other participants, and everyone we met along the way added to my enjoyment. We were particularly lucky to see a very large variety of animals and a reasonably good view of Kilimanjaro but it would have been a great trip even if some of those elements had not been available. I would recommend the trip to anyone with a healthy back (the roads were really challenging).

This was my first Road Scholar trip and I have to say with great emphasis it was the best trip I've ever taken.
The diversity of experiences was educational and interesting. The elephant orphanage, public primary school, the Olduvai Gorge Museum, and Masai villages all added depth to the overall experience. On safaris, the incredible numbers of animals and birds were completely overwhelming! I mean we saw elephants, zebras, lions, giraffes, rhinoceros, hippopotami, crocodiles, Nile monitors, warthogs, hyenas, jackals, wildebeest, cape buffalo, topi, gazelles, impalas, cheetahs, and many more.
Birds were diverse and plentiful from eagles, vultures, cranes, flamingos, and spoonbills, to weavers and bee-eaters, colorful rollers, kingfishers, barbets, and geese.
Our guide, Alfred, was the perfect mix of knowledge and patience. He knew everything! He became our leader, the head of our little temporary family. His concern for each of us was evident and he worked overtime to make sure everyone of us had what we needed for a truly memorable experience. Our drivers were also great, Peter and Justin in particular were very personable, knowledgeable, and helpful.
Personally, I didn't mind the dust, the bumpy roads, or the long drives. I was literally at the edge of my seat the whole time. It seemed there was something new to see around every corner.
The variety of foods we ate was plentiful and tasty. Hotels and camps were comfortable and safe.
I am already planning my next Road Scholar trip to Galapagos.

This safari definitely met my expectations. It was the trip of a lifetime , without exaggeration. We saw elephants, gazelles, cheetahs, wildabeasts , lions,hippos, giraffes, hyenas, topis and jackals galore, with some leopards and rhinos. The savanna birds were fascinating! There were plenty of opportunities some great photography but it was the experiences which will be treasured. We had a great group and Edwin was an exceptional leader. What a guide! The food and accommodations were marvelous. The only thing one has to contend with on this program are the very bumpy and dusty roads!

This was a great trip. We were in small groups and it was easy to get up close & personal with almost all the animals (& birds) we saw. Most of our drivers & guides were expert at identifying & finding wildlife from afar, and giving us close-up views. The time of year was great--not too hot, not too wet, not too crowded.

I expected to see a few animals, but I saw thousands, and at close range! On a 90 minute bird walk by Lake Victoria, the guide found us more than 60 different birds. We stayed in tents, stayed at the foot of Kilimanjaro, visited a Maasai village and school, fell asleep to the sound of grunting hippos, visited the gorge where Lucy was found.
This was an expertly led trip. The guide is a native of a traditional Kenya village, the oldest of 19 children, who started school barefoot at age 11, and is now a well-educated and sophisticated modern gentleman. In a way, his story seems to be the story of Africa. He was very generous with his considerable knowledge and effort, and worked very hard for us to experience his country. He was attentive to the individual needs of the group members above and beyond what I expected.
For the first time in 17 Road Scholar trips, I was disappointed, not with the trip, but with Road Scholar. The information packet contained incomplete, contradictory, and misleading information. I had to play phone tag to get information. Mailings related to the trip were not timely.
But I give the trip itself full marks__ it was a wonderful experience!!

What an AMAZING experience! We saw and did more than I could have imagined! The animals, the scenery, the people-all incredible!
Lions head butting each other in greeting, cheetahs cleaning each others' faces, hippos rolling around in the water, zebras grooming each other, elephants by the hundreds crossing the plains, giraffes in droves, and of course the wildebeest migration - thousands of them. And then there was the Oldupai Gorge where the Leakeys discovered the first hominid skull, the Maasai village, the Tanzanian school, the coffee plantation, the city tour of Nairobi, the elephant orphanage and giraffe conservancy-all fascinating and thought provoking! We even got in some shopping along the way, including at a great place in the city of Nairobi where the prices were the best.
The accommodations were fabulous! Don't be put off by the "luxury tent" description-they are huge and come with local security (in one case an actual Maasai), lovely furnishings and modern "facilities" - some even prettier than in my own home. Each place seemed better than the last!
The food was decidedly western - as most of the resorts do cater to a European/US crowd. Would have liked to try some local dishes, but what we did have was top notch and there was a lot of variety.
But our tour guide, Alfred Mutai was FABULOUS! He made the trip! He had a lot to deal with (toothaches, elderly travelers, dietary issues), but he handled it all professionally, calmly, and quietly. He was always one step ahead and thought of things before we even knew we needed them. He was incredibly knowledgeable, told great stories, and imparted interesting information. His booklet (that he created) was great - lots of good info! He seemed to really care that we were getting out of the program what we should.
The booklet initially provided by Road Scholar, however, was a bit outdated. Some of the info was conflicting and outdated & I ended up buying things I didn't need like a H2O bottle.

The trip was all we expected. Everything was great the way it was. Kip was wonderful, we saw all the animals. Everyday when you went out you thought you already saw it all, and you'd see something new and unexpected. I was amazed at the numbers of the animals, thousands of zebra and wildebeest. Lots of lions and other big cats. The leopard and rhino were harder to see, but we also had more than one sighting of them. Lots of hippos and giraffes as well as thousands of different antelopes, gazelles and lots of other animals. I liked the visit to Ngorongoro crater and Olduvai gorge. The visit to the elephant orphanage after seeing so many in the wild was not as interesting. It would have been better to have it at the beginning.

I have wanted to see African wildlife in their natural surroundings for a long time. this program enable me to do just that - seeing large groups of animals in an expansive savannah and individual animals or small groups very close up. Full advantage was taken of every minute and the accommodations were different almost every night which added to the enjoyment of having different experiences. It was all wonderful and shared with very nice traveling companions and guides. It is a great tour, as an initial entry or as a solo African safari.

Our guide/instructor/ James Kiptoo was over the top knowledgeable, accommodating, and relentless in the quest to find specific wildlife of each of our delights. I just got back from this trip in Africa. Amazing wildlife right up beside your safari vehicle. The accommodations range was wide from nice hotel in Nairobi to tent/cottages to tent. Fabulous and plenty of food. In some places you should not eat the uncooked veges and salad - but your leader will advise where it is ok. None of us were sick, and I did not see one mosquito, but we were at the end of the dry season. There were 8 of us, in 2 vehicles and that was a nice fit with 2 empty seats and we all got along fabulously! Even with 4, it is crowded, moving around inside the vehicles and getting up and down from the vehicles. There is not a lot of walking, but moving around up and down, back to front, etc. is quite difficult, even for people without any mobility problems. You are up early most every day to be where the animals are by sunrise. And dinner is usually at 8PM so they are long days, once in a while with a couple of hours of down time. Our guide, Washington Wichira was terrific. A birder by career, he knew the name of every bird and animal! The vehicle drivers are also well aware of what we were specifically looking for and made it a point to find that animal! Only downsides were that it was very hot (no AC except in Nairobi), and the travel time was 30 hours from my house to the hotel in Nairobi. Suggest what I did and book an extra night at the hotel in Nairobi before your excursions begin early the first morning. So glad I did! Everyone takes US Dollars - take plenty of small bills - $1, $5, $10, $20 in excellent condition. Hotels will break smaller US Dollars, but will not give you cash on a credit card and ATMs are rare and usually don’t work. Another suggestion is to get the yellow fever vaccine if you can only because it’s easier at the border crossings. If you are considering this trip, go now before your mobility decreases! It is fabulous!

This is my first safari and I found this to be a phenomenal experience. There were up-closed safe encounters with over 54 different animals, including the big "5" and big "9" and during the trip we identified over 120 bird species. The beauty, vastness and variation in the terrain is awe inspiring. The educational and hands on cultural experiences were beautifully presented.
I would highly recommend to this trip to anyone interested in a safari.

This was a superbly thought-out, led, organized and implemented trip.
