Afternoon: Check-in and registration: You may check-in at the Inn front desk for your room beginning at 4:00 pm, then register with the Road Scholar staff at a table set up in the lobby from 4 - 5 pm. At 5 pm we will gather for introductions and orientation, followed by a tour of the campus. Your packet will contain an updated schedule of lectures, hands-on experience and other program activities that we will review. (Local circumstances, such as weather, may require some changes in the program schedule.)
Dinner: Our dinners at the Shawnee Inn will be buffet-style, and will include two salads, rolls and butter, two entrées (one of which will be vegetarian), vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, a fresh fruit tray, and beverages. Dinner is an opportunity to become acquainted with your new Road Scholar companions, and to discover what else you share beyond a love of lifetime learning. Portions are generous, so be careful. The food is excellent, and it's easy to put on a pound or two while you're here.
Evening: After dinner we'll have a Delaware River safety talk, including paddling safety, reading the river and bicycling and hiking safety and preparation.
Activity note: Paddling instruction for 2 hours; 3 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail, mostly even terrain, moderate pace.
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at River Room will be buffet-style and include a wide array of both hot and cold items, including a fresh omelet station, create your own waffles, fresh fruit and even homemade granola for your oatmeal. After breakfast, we will prepare our own picnic lunches from a buffet offering deli meats and cheeses, PBJ, crudité platter, fresh fruits, homemade cookies, trail mix and juices.
Morning: This morning we'll head to Hidden Lake, which is a glacially carved lake, to learn paddling techniques in with our instructors for a variety of watercraft. The instruction will consist of approximately two hours of different paddling strokes. In addition you will be taught the key elements needed to "read the river." We will be paddling in the National Park, so we will be provided with life jackets that we must wear.
Lunch: Picnic Lunch.
Afternoon: After lunch, we'll enjoy a scenic hike on the Appalachian Trail overlooking the Delaware Water Gap with our expert guide, who will teach us about the local fauna and flora. The hike will be more than 3 miles long and offer mostly even terrain. We will hike at a moderate pace and take breaks to take in the spectacular views. When we return to the Inn there will be a relaxing afternoon yoga class for those who wish to participate.
Dinner: Dinner will be buffet-style at the Inn, and will include 2 salads, rolls and butter, two entrees (one will be vegetarian) vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, fresh fruit platter and beverages.
Evening: A ranger from the National Park Service will lecture on the cultural history of the area.
Activity note: 3 mile paddle via raft;
Breakfast: Our breakfast will be buffet-style in the Shawnee Inn River Room restaurant. We offer a wide choice of both hot and cold items, including make-your-own waffles, omelets to order, and fresh fruit platters.
Morning: After breakfast, we will make our own picnic lunches, then meet at the Shawnee River Base to embark on our 3 mile raft adventure down the Delaware River. We will paddle (using and practicing the new skills we learned yesterday) into the Delaware Water Gap and conclude in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The rafting is at a slow leisurely pace with lots of chances to see wildlife. Along the way we'll continue to learn how to read the river.
Lunch: We will enjoy a scenic picnic lunch with the lunches we pack for ourselves in the morning.
Afternoon: After a short break upon returning from your rafting excursion, your bicycle will be properly fitted to you by our cycling expert. After which you are encourage to play a round of Golf on our beautiful approach course, play some tennis or simply enjoy the beauty of the Poconos.
Dinner: Buffet Dinner will be at The Shawnee Inn and include two salads, rolls and butter, two entrees (one vegetarian) vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, fresh fruit platter and beverages.
Evening: Enjoy a concert on the beautiful grounds of the Shawnee Inn overlooking the Delaware River.
Activity note: Bike ride will be a 16 mile ride on packed cinder trails with a 1% downgrade.
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the Shawnee Inn will include a wide array of hot and cold foods, including a fresh omelet station, create your own waffles, fresh fruit and French toast or blueberry pancakes. After breakfast we will make our own lunches for our picnic.
Morning: Today we will have a 16 mile bicycle ride with our cycling expert along the Lehigh River and explore the sights and sounds along the route. We will visit a waterfall and experience the thrill of the white water rushing along. This route is nice and flat at a 1% downgrade, so there are no hills to climb. Bicycles and helmets will be supplied to those who do not bring their own bikes. If you bring your bike, it will be stored securely on Shawnee Inn property.
Lunch: Picnic lunch near a rustic waterfall
Afternoon: After lunch we'll continue our bicycling adventure.
Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Shawnee Inn will include two salads, rolls and butter, two entrees (one vegetarian) vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, fresh fruit platter and beverages.
Evening: We’ll gather for a presentation by our naturalist on a topic of current interest. Depending on seasonal factors including weather, it may be indoors or outdoors.
Activity note: Canoe/Kayak adventure will consist of a 10 mile paddle down the pristine Delaware River.
Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the Shawnee Inn will include hot and cold choices, an omelet and make your own waffle station and fresh fruit. After breakfast we will prepare our lunches for the picnic.
Morning: This morning we'll travel about 10 miles up river via vans to embark on our paddling adventure. We will paddle down the Delaware River to Jump Rock, a large rock situated along the river, that locals would often use when jumping into the river.
Lunch: Picnic lunch along the river
Afternoon: After lunch, we'll continue our river trip and have a chance to swim in an Eddy pool.
Dinner: Our farewell dinner tonight will be at The Gem & Keystone Tavern, a short walk from the Inn. The Gem & Keystone features locally grown produce, and a variety of beers brewed right here by ShawneeCraft brewery.
Evening: An evening campfire complete with smores.

Morning: After breakfast you are invited to join us for a 45 minute presentation called "The River's Edge" about the local history featuring fascinating stories and hundreds of historical photographs led by a local expert.
