Afternoon: Check-in and registration: You may check-in at the Inn front desk for your room beginning at 4:00 pm, then register with the Road Scholar staff at a table set up in the lobby from 4 - 5 pm. At 5 pm we will gather for introductions and orientation, followed by a tour of the campus. Your packet will contain an updated schedule of lectures, hands-on experience and other program activities that we will review. (Local circumstances, such as weather, may require some changes in the program schedule.)
Dinner: Our dinners at the Shawnee Inn will be buffet-style, and will include two salads, rolls and butter, two entrées (one of which will be vegetarian), vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, a fresh fruit tray, and beverages. Dinner is an opportunity to become acquainted with your new Road Scholar companions, and to discover what else you share beyond a love of lifetime learning. Portions are generous, so be careful. The food is excellent, and it's easy to put on a pound or two while you're here.
Evening: After Dinner join us for a fun and informative SAFETY class covering all the different activities of the coming week.
Activity note: 3 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail, rocky, uneven terrain, moderate pace. Paddling instruction for 2 hours;
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at River Room will be buffet-style and include a wide array of both hot and cold items, including a fresh omelet station, create your own waffles, fresh fruit and even homemade granola for your oatmeal. After breakfast, we will prepare our own picnic lunches from a buffet offering deli meats and cheeses, PBJ, crudité platter, fresh fruits, homemade cookies, trail mix and juices.
Morning: Monday Morning: Hike Mount Minsi (3 miles): This mountain is the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap, where the Kittatiny mountain ridge descends 1200’ to the Delaware River. We’ll begin at the trailhead in the town of Delaware Water Gap, PA, approximately 500’ above the river. Our hike will follow a section of the Appalachian Hiking Trail (A.T.), a footpath that spans almost 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine. Our adventure will take us on a hike of about 3 miles for creek crossings, mountain views, and rocks! We’ll climb to about 800’ elevation for a great long distance view, and then descend with some rolling hills. When we come out of the woods, we’ll hike into the borough of DWG and explore this cool jazz and hiker haven. Terrain is mountainous with rocks for the first 1.5 miles, then smoother. Total climbing is about 400’. Ride is on trail (no motor vehicle traffic). Wear sturdy shoes and/or hiking boots. Hiking poles or walking sticks can be helpful for balance. Bring two bottles of water, your lunch in a backpack (you carry it), and your camera.
Lunch: Picnic Lunch.
Afternoon: Monday Afternoon: Paddling Instruction: This is your chance to practice paddling a kayak, canoe or raft. We will embark from the Shawnee Inn boat launch and head upriver 100 yards into a calm side channel where we can practice getting in and out of our boats, so we’ll have opportunities for swimming here as well. Wear: bathing suit, water shoes. Don’t bring anything on boat that can’t get wet, i.e. wallet, keys, camera. Monday Afternoon: Yoga Class Yoga for all ages & abilities. Wear comfortable clothing. Yoga mats will be provided.
Dinner: Dinner will be buffet-style at the Inn, and will include 2 salads, rolls and butter, two entrees (one will be vegetarian) vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, fresh fruit platter and beverages.
Evening: After dinner join us for a 45 minute presentation called "The River's Edge" about the local history featuring fascinating stories and hundreds of historical photographs led by a local expert.
Activity note: 2 mile bike ride around town on mostly flat terrain, 3 mile raft
Breakfast: Our breakfast will be buffet-style in the Shawnee Inn River Room restaurant. We offer a wide choice of both hot and cold items, including make-your-own waffles, omelets to order, and fresh fruit platters.
Morning: Tuesday Morning: Practice Bike Ride: Meet your bicycle and adjust it to fit you so you can be comfortable, in control and have fun. We’ll check our tires, brakes and gears, and set off for a 2 mile ride around the village of Shawnee-on-Delaware. Wear comfortable clothing, sneakers or bike shoes (no flip-flops). Tuesday Morning: Rafting the Delaware River: We’ll embark from the Shawnee Inn for a 3 mile excursion, heading down river to Kittatiny Point. Along the way will be chances to swim and take photos if you have waterproof camera. Bring a bottle of water to drink along the way. We’ll pack our lunches in a large group drysack to eat when we reach our destination. Don’t bring anything on boat that can’t get wet, i.e. wallet, keys, camera.
Lunch: We will enjoy a scenic picnic lunch with the lunches we pack for ourselves in the morning.
Afternoon: Tuesday Afternoon: Mystery Field Trip! Description: hhhhmmmmm???? Wear sneakers, bring a bottle of water and a small snack.
Dinner: Buffet Dinner will be at The Shawnee Inn and include two salads, rolls and butter, two entrees (one vegetarian) vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, fresh fruit platter and beverages.
Evening: Enjoy a concert on the beautiful grounds of the Shawnee Inn overlooking the Delaware River.
Activity note: Bike ride will be a 16 mile ride on packed cinder trails with a 1% downgrade.
Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the Shawnee Inn will include a wide array of hot and cold foods, including a fresh omelet station, create your own waffles, fresh fruit and French toast or blueberry pancakes. After breakfast we will make our own lunches for our picnic.
Morning: Wednesday Morning: Bike Adventure to Jim Thorpe: Our bike ride will follow the Delaware & Lehigh Canal/Rail Trail from Rockport to Jim Thorpe. We’ll pass waterfalls, caves, old trains and most of all, the Lehigh River. The ride will be very flat (1% downhill all the way). Guides will carry your lunches on their bikes to stop along the way and picnic. Riding distance: 15 miles Bring two bottles of water, lunch, snacks and your camera. Van ride to our starting point is about one hour.
Lunch: Picnic lunch on trail
Afternoon: Wednesday Afternoon: Field Trip in Jim Thorpe: When we reach Jim Thorpe, we’ll be able to explore the village on foot, for chance to learn local history, i.e. the Molly Maguires, or seek out ice cream or antiques. (Bring a few dollars to treat yourself in Jim Thorpe.) Quiz: Who was Jim Thorpe? What is Mauch Chunk?
Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Shawnee Inn will include two salads, rolls and butter, two entrees (one vegetarian) vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, fresh fruit platter and beverages.
Evening: We’ll gather for a presentation by our National Park Ranger.
Activity note: 3.5 mile hike on rocky and uneven terrain in the Dunnfield Creek Natural Area. Canoe/Kayak adventure will consist of a 3 mile paddle down the pristine Delaware River.
Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the Shawnee Inn will include hot and cold choices, an omelet and make your own waffle station and fresh fruit. After breakfast we will prepare our lunches for the picnic.
Morning: Thursday Morning: Hiking in Dunnfield Creek Natural Area Description: This hike will be in New Jersey, partly following the Dunnfield Creek small waterfalls, a few water crossings and some hills. This is the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap. Terrain is rocky; the hike is mostly shaded, with rock and dirt surface. Elevation is gain is about 600’. Hike length is ~3.5 miles. Wear sturdy shoes and/or hiking boots. Hiking poles or walking sticks can be helpful for balance. Bring two bottles of water, your lunch in a backpack (you carry it) and your camera!
Lunch: Picnic lunch along the trail
Afternoon: Thursday Afternoon: Canoe/Kayak Adventure on the Delaware River: Our journey will be 3 miles from Smithfield Beach down river to finish at the Shawnee Inn. Paddle with a partner, enjoy the cruise, the current. Look for fish, bald eagles, other birds and land animals along the wooded shorelines. Bring a bottle of water to drink along the way. Don’t bring anything on boat that can’t get wet, i.e. wallet, keys, camera.
Dinner: Our farewell dinner tonight will feature locally grown produce, and a variety of beers brewed right here by ShawneeCraft brewery are available for purchase.
Evening: An evening campfire complete with smores.

Morning: After breakfast you are invited to join us for a 45 minute "Leave No Trace Behind" certification presentation led by a LNT trainer. After the program we will conclude.
