The sites were breath-takingly gorgeous and we delved into the culture and history to better understand the people and food. The guides were terrific. This trip exceeded all expectations!

Good trip, but we would replace the Como hotel. The room keys were unsafe: the key was bulky and heavy, forcing you to leave it at the front desk where ANYBODY off the street could come in to the front desk and ask for the room keys by number and get it. Also, the Como hotel, while a good location, the rooms were not very clean.
The other hotels were fine.

We had an amazing time on this trip. We have been in Italy many times and have always wanted to see the Northern Lake Region. The trip was better than I even expected and a huge part of our enjoyment were the amazing people we shared the trip with including Allesio.

Our program the Italian Lake Region.
I enjoyed this program except for the food at the first Hotel Portici.
At times inedible.
The Guide Alessio was wonderful. Our group was a very pleasant size and variety of individuals.
I recommend this program if you want to participate and learn as a group, as well as having a chance of free time to explore.

We had an absolutely grand trip!!! Road Scholar gets an A+ in planning as well as recruiting, guides, experts, and guests! Having Trinity College involved produced excellent results. However, the interactions between all twenty members of our group and the guides and experts were the best we have ever experienced on all our many tours. Thanks to all involved in this grand adventure!

This trip was excellent in all respects. This was our eighth Road Scholar trip and Maura Mauri was by far the best group leader we have had. She was able to meld the area's scenery, history and culture together to create an unforgettable experience. The guides at each of the lakes were also fantastic. I couldn't of asked for a better presentation of the lakes of Italy. This trip has my highest recommendation for anyone interested in seeing the beauty of northern Italy. I rate this trip as a 5 out of 5.

The is a wonderful program, well planned, amazing group leaders, exciting sights to visit with knowledgeable effective local experts in a beautiful part of the world, Northern Italy Lake District.

Though all 10 of our previous Road Scholar tours were excellent, this one leads the way in the great chemistry among all participants! Also, the food & wine can only be closely matched by our great tour of Sicily!

Excellent program! Mara Mori, the group leader, is an amazing person who loves life and sharing her knowledge with others about Italian history, all of its beauty and splendor, Italian food, fabulous gardens and lakes and the mountains. This trip is a must if you want to have a spectacular all around experience.

1st, special thanks and compliments to tour leader Mara Mori for all she did for our group. Her personal warmth, amazing knowledge, and adjustments to changing circumstances due to extreme weather was impressive and all very much appreciated.
Compliments also to our 3 specialist guides: Gertraud Wistholer, Patrizia Spini, and Paolo Ortelli. Informative, expansive, welcoming of questions, and - particularly with Gertraud - enthusiastic and energetic.
Trip highlights for me include the private concert in Malcesine, the Otzi Exhibit, The Taste of Italy at Enoteca La Cambusa, our visit to the Borromeo Islands, and Castello del Buin Consiglio.
Food & drink was good throughout... especially so many terrific desserts (and I regularly sidestep dessert when home). My absolutely favorite meals were those at Il Pappagallo in Stresa. So good to sample so many pizzas!

This is a very beautiful part of Italy and Road Scholar was a great way to see it and learn about the history, food, and culture.

This was everything I imagined and more. Villas, lakes, food, wine and all the participants were top notch. Our group leader, Mara Mori, is everything that Road Scholar wants participants to experience: vast subject knowledge, deep understanding of the history of Italy, love of the geography and of course her food and wine selections for our group meals.
Our 2 guides, Paola and Patrizia, also were very high caliber. They went above and beyond to make sure we had the ultimate Italian Lakes experience!
This is a program I highly recommend!

Terrific trip - wonderful scenery, sites, activities and food.

This trip was delightful from beginning to end. Our leader Alessio was exceptional: well organized, a wealth of information, understanding of individual needs of our group, and simply a joy to be with. I have recommended this trip to several friends and family. I can't think of one aspect that could be improved.
— Review left September 23, 2025
Outstanding trip in every way! The lakes were beautiful, activities appropriate and memorable, and Alessio, our guide, what can I say? He was welcoming, knowledgeable, funny, and made being our "fearless leader" (as we nicknamed him) look easy. He was a big reason for the trip being such a success.
The hotels were all very well-located - staffs were lovely. The only improvement would probably be to match those with more physical needs to be in rooms where there was a stand alone shower rather than a combination shower/bath (as the sides of the tub were very high and there were no grab bars in the rooms).
Otherwise, meals were outstanding - plenty of food ... I also particularly appreciated the balance of "tour time" with "on your own time" - it was perfect.
This was my 5th Road Scholar trip and I look forward to booking another one!

We decided to take the Italian Lakes Tour (our very first Road Scholar tour) based on the extremely positive reviews and because we wanted to explore this beautiful part of Italy. We were very pleased with all aspects of this tour and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The scenery was breathtaking, the villas and gardens were beautiful, the food and wine were delicious, the accommodations were wonderful, and we really liked the small group format. Our group leader, Mara Mori, was excellent and went above and beyond to make this tour a success for our group. Mara was personable, organized, and knowledgable. We would highly recommend this tour.

This is a strange review request. The hotel in Como was not comfortable, My room was DARK and the one window had no curtain but a shutter which made the room a cave. Some of the presentations were POOR and only took up time that could have been used spending more time with the locals. I also feel that perhaps you could find a better location on Lake Como!
I feel that the video presented before the trip was misleading. There were many more steps than indicated in the video and the photos were of the easier ones.
This review would be better if there were quetions to help one remember.
The guide, Alessio, was OUTSTANDING. Fortunately so was the travel group.

The tour of the Lakes Region of Italy was perfect. Our tour guide Alessio Rosoldi, was professional , knowledgeable and a joy to have him for our trip. He was a wealth of information on all topics . Whether it was history, art, religion or architecture, he either knew or found out for us.
A spectacular experience for all. He is also very kind and patient. A wonderful guide for Road Scholar!
Can't wait for the next experience.

I am very glad I chose "La Dolce Vita: The Italian Lakes of Como, Garda, and Maggiore." The trip exceeded my expectations. Our wonderful group leader, Mara Mori, could not have been better connected or knowledgeable. We experienced amazing places from the Sella Pass in the Dolomites (where it snowed a bit), to Otzi, the Ice Man, in Bolzano, to the gorgeous lakes themselves with their exquisite villas and gardens. We ate very well! Delicious local dishes in our included meals, and lots of gelato on the side. The local guides could not have been better and we came away with a clearer understanding of the history and culture of the area. There was one special treat in Malcesine by the best accordionist in Italy, Gabriele Corsaro. This was not polka, it was beautiful classical music such as I have never heard played on an accordion. Unforgettable!

The LA DOLCE VITA adventure is certainly 'the sweet life' when enjoyed with the experienced and knowledgeable leadership of MARA!! She coordinates wonderful activities, delightful guides, good eats and beverages while shepherding us through the busy Italian Lakes District nooks and crannies. *****

The Italian Lakes were my first experience with Road Scholars and although I was anxious about group travel, I heard nothing but favorable reviews so I was ready to give it a try.
I traveled with 4 friends which I think added to my fantastic time. There was not a single bump in our two weeks together. The program was well organized - our lodging was good, the food was delicious, but the highlight was our amazing guide - Mara Mori.
Oh what a gift she has been. I’m sure we will stay in touch forever.
Mara was like having an encyclopedia in my hand, she knew everything about everything! Looking back, my favorite part of the trip was that we didn’t just see things, we learned about them (in detail). Mara also had experts at various stops. It was much more than I expected and gave the trip added depth.
We had our own bus, our own boats and even our own train! The group got to know each other but we had plenty of options to bypass a group event if we needed personal space.
I loved everything about the trip and look forward to finding another destination with Road Scholars.

I strongly recommend this trip. The itinerary was ideal. This was my 11th Road Scholar trip. I can’t tell you how fortunate we were to have such an excellent leader in Mara. Energetic and cheerful, she generously shared her deep knowledge of the history and culture of Italy. I’ve always been impressed by RS leaders, but Mara truly was exceptional. One of the things I enjoyed was that I was perfectly comfortable not joining in on the occasional outing and doing my own thing.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip. Mara, our guide was superb. She was very knowledgeable about our itinerary and organized everything so as to optimize our time. She was also extremely helpful with respect to activities for us to enjoy in our free time including where and how to buy tickets.
I loved walking through towns and watching folks come out of their stores and restaurants and greet Mara like family, she seemed to know everyone.
Mara appreciates the food and wines of the region and made sure we sampled every regional specialty. It was up to us to learn to moderate our portions.
Hotels were all very well located so we could easily walk to restaurants and sights in every town we stayed in.
Our tour could be divided into 3 sections and we had local guides in each; they were all very knowledgeable. The only criticism I would have is sometimes there was too much detail.
Without reservation I would recommend this trip.

Our trip was fabulous from beginning to end. Mara was amazing and has a wealth of knowledge, about the region food etc. Our hotels were very good and centrally located, all with great restaurants, bars and helpful staff. We felt we were on a very special tour with Mara as our guide, her attention to detail of every aspect of the trip was truly the best. Our bus drivers and other tour guides were also amazing. Was so impressed with their passion for art and history!
A couple of times I might of enjoyed a little more free time, but didn’t want to miss anything.
Truly a special trip. Love Mara!! Loved the food and wine. Would defiantly schedule another road scholar tour.
Thank you!!

The program was much more than what we expected and memorable in many ways.
— Review left November 10, 2024
I was surprised that the food was as bland as it was. I've been in Italy in the past and found the food was excellent. If it was up to me, I'd have less meals together as a group. Three times a day is just too much togetherness. And it would give us the chance to venture out more on our own. Cut it down to two meals each day and charge less for the trip. At 65 I was the youngest person in the group. I was rather surprised by this as the trip was a bit strenuous. I think sometimes people over-estimate their ability to keep up and don't understand that there will be a lot of stairs and no handrails.
The scenery was lovely. Our guide Mara was wonderful. I don't know how the guides hold it together. We had a few people on the trip who were extremely trying and rude. They are talking when they should be listening. Many were hard of hearing. And complained about everything. I'm beginning to wonder if Road Scholar trips are for me. It's not relaxing when people just don't seem to know what is going on and things have to be repeated so often.
I was afraid I was going to miss my flight back to the US. My check in counter was the furthest from the entrance. Passport control was an absolute disaster. When I finally made it to my gate my zone was the next to be called. I barely had time to use the toilet before boarding the plane. The three of us who had a flight at noon should have been taken to the airport an hour sooner. I lost track of the elderly couple who was on my flight with me. I assume they made it home.
My sister and I lucked out and had nicer rooms than many of the other participants. I know this is luck of the draw and this time we lucked out. I wish we had more leisurely mornings. An 8:15 start is just too early. Don't make anything before nine. I'm not a big breakfast eater, but even I felt rushed.
I can't understand why the toilets on the bus are always locked. I assume the drivers just don't want to have to clean them.

This was a good trip, which my wife and I enjoyed. Alessio was a great guide, and because he had lived in the US, his English and cultural awareness were exceptional. Our trip was plagued by hard rain, which made boat trips on the lakes challenging. Some things, like visiting gardens in the rain, were not worthwhile, and perhaps alternatives should have been offered. We would have appreciated a more generous wine allowance, like on your Tuscany trip, but this is a small matter. We appreciated getting to know this part of Italy.

My husband and I recently returned from this tour of the Italian Lakes Region of Italy. This trip was outstanding in every way. We enjoyed inspiring instructors, interesting fellow travelers and many spirited conversations. A few highlights for us were the breathtaking views of the majestic peaks of the Dolomites, Isola Madre known for its amazing collection of rare plant species from around the world and a cable car ride (Funicular) to Brunate for breathtaking views of the Italian & Swiss Alps.
and the Museum of Natural History within the walls of the Castello Scaligero castle overlooking Lake Garda. We visited villas, museums, meticulously landscaped gardens, beautiful churches, cathedrals and charming fishing villages. We enjoyed panoramic views of the lakes and many opportunities for moments of relaxation. This was our second trip with Road Scholar, and we are looking forward to many more.

I was fortunate to experience my first Road Scholar trip with the group leader, Mara Mori and Trinity College - Johanna Merriman. If I could be guaranteed that all future Road Scholar guides would be of their expertise and kindness, it would be an easy decision to book a future trip.
The days were filled with activities that provided excellent meals, educational lectures, local guides and enjoyable adventures on small group boats on the Lakes.
Meeting the other participants (many who were past Road Scholar clients) made the trip even more fun.
Other friends of mine unfortunately did not always have positive comments about booking with Road Scholar - so again - Mara and Johanna made this trip a 5 star review.

This program is second to none among Road Scholar offerings. Our group leader, Mara Mori, was outstanding in every aspect. The itinerary was just as I hoped (even better, we got unexpected snow in the mountains, which I loved!), with so many wonderful experiences, food, accommodations, and learning opportunities. I don't hesitate to recommend it highly!

Our group leader, Mara Mori, did an outstanding job of planning and organizing the program. Her expert knowledge of Italian history and culture, combined with her cheerful personality made this a very informative and enjoyable experience. The local guides that augmented Mara's presentations were also excellent. Our hotel accommodations at the three lakes were ideally situated and fully met or exceeded our expectations. Adjustments were readily made to the included meals for members of the group who had food restrictions. Logistics arrangements, including the bus and boat transportation, were executed flawlessly. Overall, this program was one of the most gratifying overseas trips we have taken in recent years.

Interesting trip, Mara is an exceptionla quide. Definitely an actiive trip with lots of steps, minimal handrails. Boat rides were good, need to be steady on your feet. So many beautuful villlas and gardens, best to go in April vs August due to heat and floweres not in bloom.Three different hotels, all were acceptable for a single traveler. I am a foodie, so eating in the hotel for dinner most nights was not my preferred way of experiencing foods. The food was predetermined in two of the hotels for dinner, lunches were also predetermined and wine was limited. Breakfast was very good, provided expresso and cappuccino as well as fruits, eggs and cheeses, meats and sweets. Lots of varied activities, buses were comfortable and the other participants were great. Most days were early starts, loads of historical information about northern Italy and surrounding areas. Truly a beautiful area!!

We were on the Dolce Vita: Italian Lake District tour from May 13-26, It was better than all the reviews said it would be. The area is absolutely amazing with lakes and rivers and those amazing mountains. As a group of 24 everyone got along well. Our 3 local guides were outstanding. Days were very full, which I greatly appreciated. As advertised, the area is hilly so there are a lot of inclines (some of them steep) and a fair amount of stairs but every step was well worth it for the wonderful view at the top. We took funicular rides from Lakes Garda and Como to get to some absolutely amazing views. Before the funicular experience in Malcesine on Lake Garda, we had a private piano concert thanks to a personal friend of our guide, Mara.
The food and wine were particular fantastic since Mara customized the food to the region and made sure that we got to experience the local flavor of each of the regions we visited. This attention to detail was what made Mara so valuable to our learning experience. She knows this region of Italy like the back of her hand and was so willing to engage with everyone, getting to know us so that she could add something special , unique, and personal to each scholar. The lectures were very informative and well researched and presented. The fact that Mara has her PhD in history added so much to the insights we got from her. I came back with a list of about 20 books and movies that I will take as “homework” from the “Professor”. Wow!!! The hotels were all very well located and pleasant. Having been on other RS trips having very good group leaders, I can say with confidence that “this is the best trip I have ever taken”, and it is largely because of Mara Mori. Grazie mille.

The La Dolce Vita program was an extraordinary exploration of this most beautiful and historically rich region of Italy. Every element has been fine tuned. From lectures with accompanying maps and detailed supporting material handouts to expert specific guides on location to the enjoyment of the carefully selected wines, cheeses, desserts and every meal in personally selected restaurants has been carefully designed by Mara Mori. She is an excellent ambassador relating her personal passion for Northern Italy each and every day. We gained a great appreciation for this region and for the expertise of our tour leader.

This is a beautiful part of the world and I am delighted to have experienced it with Road Scholar. The mix of lectures, boat trips, walking tours, group meals, castle visits, piano concert, and free time was just great! As a native of the region, our guide, Mara, did a wonderful job of expanding our knowledge about Italian history and current events in Italy. She also handled every detail like the professional she is. Our group was quite special in that everyone seemed to get along well and enjoy each other's company throughout the trip. Each lake has it's won personality and style, and each one is worth getting to know if even for a short time. And visiting the Dolomites the day after a May snowstorm is something I will never forget. This is another Road Scholar trip that I would highly recommend!

What a wonderful trip. My husband, who rarely speaks in superlatives, said he was thrilled with it. Mara Mori was our trip leader, and she is the reason we can use superlatives for it. Her breadth and depth of knowledge were remarkable. Yes, the trip was “The Italian Lakes of Como, Garda and Maggiore” – but it was so much more. By the time it ended we had learned the history and culture of the lakes and many of the lake towns, and the surrounding countryside and significant towns and areas within pleasant and often spectacularly beautiful days’ drives. We even crossed over the Sella Pass in the Dolomites while there was still right much snow on the ground. We saw beauty everywhere – the lakes and their settings, the art of and in the castles and palazzos, the lovely gardens. The trip was a culinary education, too. The group meal menu options featured foods and wines that were specialties of the various regions. Mara gave several presentations, and she wove into one a canto from Dante's Divine Comedy; and into another excerpts from accounts of 18th and 19th century Grand Tours, including ones by Goethe, Mark Twain, and Edith Wharton. She gave a talk on the rise of fascism in Italy in the 1920s through the fall of Mussolini. Mara’s leadership and organizational abilities were excellent as well. The three local guides she chose met her high standards for subject knowledge and historical context, plus were enthusiastic presenters. She encouraged us to share anything we knew that might enhance the trip or increase everyone’s knowledge. She was clear in her directions, instructions, and communications. She seemed to have boundless stores of energy and enthusiasm. She was flexible, she was adaptable. She was fun to spend time with. Everyone wanted her at their table for our group meals. Thank you so much, Mara. And thank you, Road Scholar.

Mara Mori, group leader for this trip, was the best we’ve ever had! Her knowledge of all things Italian and especially of the region we traveled in was beyond expectations! She shared her knowledge readily and thoroughly as we traveled from place to place, gave additional lectures at our hotels, and included additional guides (Daniela Marini and Patrizia Spini) who were also excellent in their local knowledge.
All this greatly added to our understanding and knowledge of the region.
And what is so special about Mara is her kindness and caring, her energy and enthusiasm for all the places we were, her knowing of all the staff at the hotels, restaurants, wineries, transportation (buses and boats), gardens and more, which contributed to our feeling special and having the best experience. To say the food was amazing is an understatement because Mara arranged for us to have special meals, wines specific to the region we were in, and always the best service and seating with views. She brought our group together and we all became good friends through Mara’s leadership and caring.
We really saw the best of the Lake District and all thanks to Mara Mori and her expertise. We would readily take another trip with Mara anytime!

This program, tour of several Italian lakes and northern provinces, was amazing and exceeded all expectations. We already knew some things about the region and its history; we had once learned some other things but forgot them; and there were many things that we did not know. The program was like finding missing pieces in a jigsaw puzzle that connected the regions, history and literature. I was able to learn a lot and gained new perspective on this part of the world and its history.

La Dolce Vita was even more than I expected. The Lakes Region offered an Italian experience that showcased mountains, lakes, ancient towns, local cuisine, historic villas and gardens and all their rich histories. Mara Mori, our guide, has a vast storehouse of knowledge of the area and shared the same with humor, sensitivity, and patience. Chances are, you can do a lot of that by yourself as I did earlier. Other regional tours, especially the Trinity linked tours are very worthwhile. And the Road Scholar trip to the Italian lake district is both beautiful (three lakefront hotels as a start) and historically rooted and even surprising, not to mention gastronimically interesting for regional cuisine!

La Dolce Vita was extremely well organized, led by our personable and knowledgeable leader, Mara Mori. Mara was the heart and soul of this tour; she created the itinerary originally and knows every nook and cranny of Northern Italy. She set the tone for a most congenial atmosphere, where everyone had a good time as they learned. Highlights included a bus ride up into the Dolomites, boat rides on all three lakes, the taste of Italy evening, a variety of restaurants and meals, Mara's recommendations for gelato, and a wonderful group of fellow travelers. Everyone in the group became friends. We especially appreciated the private boat tour on Lake Como, since the public boats were extremely crowded.

If you've ever wanted to visit Italy's beautiful northern lakes, this is a great way to do it. All the positive things other reviewers have said about leader Mara Mori are all true. She-- and the other professional lecturers and guides she brought in-- delivered what was perhaps the most "educational" of any tour we've taken.
The Italian lakes offered varied and glorious scenery, Mara and her other experts really knew Italy's history, and she effortlessly walked the difficult line between keeping her group on-schedule and fostering a spirit of easy companionship.
It's a tribute to both her and our group that even cold, wet days generated no grumbling. I've never experienced a tour with such great group camaraderie!

Highest marks go to Mara Mori who provided our all-female group with an outstanding overview of the history, culture, cuisine and wines of the Italian northern lakes region. The trip was well organized and nicely paced as we explored markets, museums, and magnificent villas and gardens -- all against the backdrop of astonishing landscapes. We were also fortunate to have Patricia Spini and Lorenza Scorti --two highly knowledgeable instructors -- join us to further deepen our understanding of the area.
A trip not to be missed.

If you love history, villas surrounded by beautiful gardens, boat trips to islands with castles and excellent restaurants, cruising Lake Como in a private boat, exploring winding cobblestone streets or visiting Oetzi, the Bronze man, this is a fabulous trip for you. Mara Mori is a knowledgeable, interesting, excellent teacher who led us on a culture packed trip of her beloved Northern Italy. She's an expert about food and wine, so come prepared to indulge!

This tour of the Italian lakes is worthwhile for everyone, providing an introduction to a part of Italy that most Americans don't visit. I had the privilege of being part of a small, all-female group of travelers on this trip, which added another very pleasant dimension to the experience. The group leader Mara Mori is a treasure: knowledgeable, friendly, organized, and patient. She knows this region and its people very well, and she enthusiastically shares her knowledge with the group. She has also put together a great group of guides to deepen the experiences in each location. Loved it!

This is a GREAT trip! The tour guide, Mara Mori, is a top notch historian who is eager to share all she knows; and she designed a fabulous trip with excellent site seeing, lectures, food and lodging. You won't regret booking this!

The tour guide, Mara, is always thinking one step ahead which insures perfectly executed logistics. She generously shares her exceptional knowledge throughout the trip and makes each day interesting and educational. The lakes, mountains, gardens and villas are gorgeous. Highly recommended.

The mountains, lakes and gardens were a beautiful backdrop to our beloved trip to the Italian Lakes District. The scenery was breathtaking. We didn't want our days to end. The food was spectacular and our Group Leader, Mara Mori, was a wealth of information. She was like an Italian mom to us with her warmth and accommodating spirit.

This is one of my top RS trips (out of 18!). We learned so much about the history, scenery, geography, and living in N. Italy. It is absolutely beautiful there. The multiple lakes we visited were all so different and worth visiting. One of the highlights is the Museum of Archeology in Bolzano "home" of Otzi, the 5000 year old "mummy" found in the Italian Alps in 1991. The museum is fascinating. Kudos go to Mara Mori, PhD, who is a fabulous instructor with an infinite knowledge of the area.

This was a wonderful program enhanced by the historical knowledge of our group leader Mara Mori and the local guides. The beautiful lakes region of northern Italy is stunning with the mountains in the background. Our group of nineteen soon became like family. A great two-week trip in Italy.

Our group leader Mara was passionate, knowledgeable and articulate about the history, food, culture and architecture of this region
She designed this program, and her choices of family run-restaurants for lunches and (some)dinners were all superb!

This was a wonderful program. Program director and instructors were very good. Lovely gardens, beautiful scenery, good food, getting to see Otzi the Iceman in Bolzano--all were big pluses!

La Dolce Vita may be an attractive name, but the tour was replete with historical informaiton and discussions of contemporary situations that were far more interesting than the title implied. It's a fascianting region with a complicated history. No doubt still evolving!

THIS WAS A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE WITH MARA, OUR INCREDIBLY KNOWLEDGABLE PROGRAM TOUR GUIDE. THE BEAUTY OF THE REGION SPEAKS FOR ITSELF AND MARA BRINGS THE REGION TO LIFE.

If you take this course you will not be disappointed. Professor Mara Mori is a gem of a person and an excellent group leader and lecturer. I spent 38 years as a Professor in higher education, and can say unequivocally that Professor Mori is one of the best.

My husband & I mainly signed up for the La Dolce Vita: Italian Lakes program when friends suggested we join them on this excursion. It sounded intriguing & proved to exceed all my expectations. Eager to learn about & visit this region, I was awed by the expansive blend of history, culture, terrain & sights scheduled each day. Covering ancient to contemporary civilizations, urban & rural communities, amongst the gorgeous lakes, valleys & mountains gave us a comprehensive & appreciative overview of this region. Plus the fun of various means of transportation getting us to our destinations. Luxury buses, boats, funiculars, & a “choo-choo train,” all created a sense of anticipation & intrigue to what gems lay ahead of us.
I may not be able to remember each name or place we visited in the future, but I will never forget our Group Leader, the marvelous Mara Mori. Not only were we awestruck by her extensive knowledge of Italy & other topics, but also her generosity in sharing a deep passion for her homeland. Clearly an experienced expert as group leader, Professor Mori skillfully knows how to keep her flock in step & engaged in her presentations & guidance. We were all impressed & thankful for Mari’s attentiveness, kindness & patience with each one of us. It is easy to see why all her contacts enroute greet her with love & admiration. I would sign up for any course she taught. She could make a tour of a parking lot interesting.

If you're trying to decide on an Italy trip, choose this one! Even if you haven't heard of all the places on the itinerary, you will be amazed at all the wonderful stops on this trip. There is so much to see other than Lake Como that are historic and beautiful. The guide Mara, makes it all possible with her knowledge of history, restaurants, hotels, food, and interesting places to see. Mara has organized the trip herself, and selected the hotels and restaurants to give participants an authentic Italian experience. I felt we received special treatment wherever we went because of Mara's connections with the staff at the places we visited, stayed, and dined. I learned a lot about Italian history that I didn't know before.

A fabulous trip in every respect! Stayed in beautiful lakefront towns, took marvelous trips to see impressive mountains, had wonderful food and wine and saw old word sites and treasures dating to the Renaissance and before. But the true treasure of this trip was our guide Mara Mori who was absolutely tireless in working to make our two weeks a tremendous success!
Totally professional, energetic, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and singularly focused on all of us, Mara was the secret ingredient that made our two weeks so special. Truth be told, I booked this trip largely on the strength of the reviews that I had read about Mara. If anything, those reviews did not do her justice.
She worked every detail behind the scenes making everything flow smoothly. She knew people in every town, shop, museum and restaurant we visited which is no surprise as it turns out she personally designed the entire trip. As a trained restaurateur and sommelier, she interfaced with chefs at our hotels and guided us to exceptional eateries. She always seemed to have a pleasant surprise waiting for us whether it was lunch she arranged with a chef she knew or a private concert with a professional pianist.
I could go on and on but the bottom line is this --- if you are looking for a trip to explore the Italian countryside then book this trip with Mara. You’ll be delighted that you did!

This trip was like an adventure into Paradise. It was gorgeous scenery, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides, out of this world food and a group of like-minded travelers who helped make this tour spectacular. The hotels were excellent too. I think Italy has the absolute best pasta, pizza and gelato on the planet. It ended all too soon. Highly recommend!

The Italian Lakes is a wonderful tour for anyone who wants to be surrounded by the beauty and majesty of nature and who enjoys a well-organized trip. We visited amazing gardens and explored many picturesque shorelines by boat. There were interesting day trips. I especially liked going to the top of the Dolomites and seeing Ötzi in the museum in Bolzano. This trip includes a lot of fun activities and many excellent lunches and dinners. I enjoyed the outdoor dining, especially in Como. I highly recommend this trip.

This was a great trip with lots of varied things to do: not just art and ancient buildings, which were nice, but also lots of sight-seeing of the beautiful countryside via the bus and tour boats, and plenty of opportunities to hike if desired. The local guides were terrific, and the head trip guides were very knowledgeable, helpful, cheerful, and quick to make decisions needed. We had a member of our party fall on some restaurant stairs and suffer a fracture, and the head guide quickly made the decision to call paramedics and get her to a hospital. She received excellent care, and her Road Scholar insurance covered it all, which was reassuring for her. I'd definitely recommend this trip.

Our trip with Mara was full of good spirit, information, surprises, and never a dull moment. Mara was always "on" and made us feel that we were the most important travelers she has ever had. She was a fountain of information and loved sharing the history of northern Italy. The itinerary covered important historical sites -- lots of castles, architectural interests -- villas and gardens, and beautiful towns and boat rides along the lakes. When finished, I felt I had a good understanding of the area and had covered the highlights as well as uncovered some interesting nooks and crannies! I would highly recommend this tour, and I would highly recommend Mara as the tour guide.

I recently attended "La Dolce Vita: The Italian Lakes of Como, Garda and Maggiore" and highly recommend it. Our Group Leader Mara Mori was outstanding. We stayed at top quality lakefront hotels and saw amazing scenery from both land want water. Our meals were excellent. We were 15 participants which was a pleasant size.

This was a great program to a part of Italy we hadn't visited before. We had wanted to take this trip in the fall, but were happy we ended up going in April because the gardens were spectacular in spring, particularly the azaleas. Mara was a great tour leader and guide.

What a pleasure to experience spring in the lakes region with the outstanding Mara Moti leading the group. The villas were stunning! The gardens were sensory overload.....tulips, daffodils, azaleas, wisteria, and dozens of other flowers nodding their beautiful heads in 70+ degree weather. Private boat trips, energizing walks, inspired cathedrals made this a trip to cherish and remember.

I recently completed the tour of the Italian Lakes. It was a fabulous experience. The sheer beauty of the area is staggering. The tour is structured to give you just the right amount of time on all three lakes. Our guide, Mara made the best tour guide I’ve ever had. Her knowledge of the area its history was invaluable. The tour is so varied, you spend a lot of time on the lakes, in gardens, exploring cities, estates and churches. The lectures Mara have us were so interesting and made our trip more engaging. Stop whatever you are doing and book this trip!

You will leave this program feeling like you have made an Italian lifelong friend and truly feel La Dolce Vita!

Mara Mori. Two words. With her special personal touches on almost everything, she make this trip one of the best for me. Examples are more that I can put in this review, but I'll try to name a few. Mara had the Head Chef at Hotel Europa prepare delicious authentic italian dishes; Mara made a point of taking us to local restaurants where she put personal touches on the menu; a private piano concert (Liszt and Mozart) at the magnificent Scaligero Castle di Malcesine; a private lecture at the Metro International Di Studi Rosminiani; private smaller boats to the various Island that made the trip so much more fun and easier than traveling on those huge ferries. I cannot say enough about Mara's organizational skills, her warmth, knowledge, expertise. Mara's personal pride in showing us Italy is what made this trip memorable and outstanding. I would go on any trip with her again.
