At a Glance

“Feeling at one with the water” is how enthusiasts describe the singular sensation of kayaking. Experience this tranquility for yourself, paddling a pristine lake as dawn’s rising mist reveals reflections of autumnal trees and your own smiling visage. Instruction begins in the calm lee of the boathouse. Once you are familiar with the equipment and how to use it safely, enjoy kayaking excursions to nearby waters led by experts.
Activity Level
Outdoor: Spirited
Solo kayaking 1-6 miles a day. Course is generally on flat-water, but lakes are large enough to experience choppy conditions. You should be able to swim. Each participant will be provided with their own solo kayak, or you may bring your own.
Small Group
Small Group
Love to learn and explore in a small-group setting? These adventures offer small, personal experiences with groups of 10 to 24 participants.

Best of all, you'll ...

  • Kayak Sagamore Lake and larger waters nearby, paddling the same waters the Vanderbilts and other Gilded Age elites did before you.
  • Learn techniques for maneuvering your craft on flat water and tips for paddling in flowing rivers.
  • An evening of traditional Adirondack entertainment or education caps your adventure.

General Notes

The Retreat Difference: This unique, often basic and no-frills experience at a Road Scholar Retreat includes opportunities for early morning exercise, interaction with the local community for insight into local life, an authentic farm-to-table or locally sourced meal, a live performance or event, and a single room to yourself for only $100 more (for many programs). Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.
