Have you ever dreamed of playing a musical instrument? Well, there is a time for all things, and this could be your time! Have fun learning to play the dulcimer, a traditional fretted string instrument born here in the Appalachian region of the United States. Playing beautiful music on the mountain or lap dulcimer does not require any previous musical experience.

  • Lessons include tuning, reading musical notations, using capos, chords and strumming for beginning, intermediate and advanced students.
  • All skill levels will be taught in classes led by qualified, friendly, patient musicians.
  • Evenings present opportunities for jamming, discussion or just listening while enjoying the peaceful environment from a rocking chair on the deck.

General Notes

Bring your own dulcimer; rental instruments available on request. Please also feel free to bring any other instrument you might play for free-time jamming. Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

John Tierney is a retired naturalist with the Kentucky State Parks System. During his 32 years of service, he lead trail walks, cave explorations, and planned many special events programs dealing such diverse nature topics as eagle watches, cave crawling events, bat seminars, wildflower pilgrimages, and environmental awareness programs. He presently conducts programs in state and national parks, as well as presenting programs for community and private organizations.
