I am so grateful that we had Susan and Jay for our group leaders. What a wealth of knowledge of the culture and the environment, and what a wonderful sense of fun. They infused the trip with joy! I canno say enough about the enchanting beauty, the history, and the gardens. Every island was a new adventure. Definitely a worthwhile trip!

We've been on 24 tours with 4 different companies, and our guides were some of the best we've ever had. Susan McGovern and Taiwi Crouch make quite the formidable team. The tour was very well planned and organized; flight days went smoothly. If Susan didn't know something Tai did, and vice versa. Every step of the way Susan and Tai incorporated language, culture, and history into everything we did. I wasn't sure about coming to Hawaii as I was worried about it being too touristy, but that notion was dispelled right away. They both were willing to discuss the reality of Hawaii - colonization and the destruction of native culture, the impact of tourism, and how the many cultures get along. Hawaii has an long and interesting history, which we've been inspired to learn more about.

RS's 4 Island Hawaii tour was an outstanding trip of a lifetime. For those never to Hawaii, or only one island, long ago, etc., this is an excellent way to see all the major islands! I SUPER enjoyed it ALL with my wife, as a 28th Anniversary, 2nd Honeymoon.

On the Road: Best of Hawaii, Maui, Kauai and Oahu -- was a fantastic program! If you want an in-depth look into the most prominent Hawaiian islands, you must do this program. Susan McGovern, our group leader, was an expert in Hawaiian history, culture, & geography! She & Tai (our other group leader) were warm & engaging & it was a pleasure to spend 3 weeks with them!!

This was an extremely interesting and well organized trip to one of the most beautiful places in the world! We learned about the locations and history that were unique to each island and how it all tied together. Our guides were amazingly well informed in every aspect of Hawaiian history, culture, language, flora and fauna. They were also kind, respectful and fun.

five stars Hawaii is so much more interesting and diverse than I imagined. This program is comprehensive and very well planned and executed. The group leaders told a story and made the trip personal through their lived experience and expertise. Highly recommend!

Loved this program! Four islands each with it's own personality and cultural significance, Susan McGovern and her husband-Rob (who was with us for a few days), had the life experience, knowledge, patience, and stamina to guide our group through this diverse adventure. Loved the history that was taught and reinforced as we progressed each day with new and unique shared experiences. The food was amazing, the people of Hawai'i so happy with life, the visits and hikes to the National Parks, National Historic Parks, State Parks, and museums; learning the Hawai'ian language, participating in hula, ukulele, and kapa design, were all wonderful. Our outings to include snorkeling, picnics, gardens, beaches, sugar, pineapple, and coffee plantations; farmers' markets, wildlife refuges, historic towns, aquarium, and both palaces were all part of what made this program great!

Twenty-one days in Hawaii - you think it's alot, but it's not enough. We're planning to go back and enjoy more of what Hawaii has to offer -- scenery, snorkeling, hiking, golfing, and, of course, the food!

Fantastic experience, and a comprehensive exploration of Hawaii's four main islands. Our group leader, Susan McGovern, was amazing and added so much to our great experience. Hotel accommodations were wonderful, the food was great, if actually too much many evenings. The field trips and presentations by local experts were all excellent. I highly recommend this trip with this leader.

The patience and kindness of Susan and John in helping members of our group to get in and out of the water over the rocks in order to snorkel at Kahalu'u Beach Park was extraordinary. Susan's presentations on "The Human History of Hawaii", "Stories about the Goddess Pele", "The Hawaiian Language" and "The Birth of Kamehameha the First" were outstanding. John's multiple lectures on the bus about the biology, geology and botany of Hawaii were also excellent. This program was packed with superb content.

Comprehensive introduction to Hawaiian culture and ecology. Expect to learn lots about native flora and culture while seeing the highlights of four islands. It’s not a beach vacation, even though we stayed at some beautiful beach properties. We could even see whales offshore during some sunset dinners!

Outstanding program that provided an excellent, comprehensive view of Hawaii - both educational and fun. The leaders (Susan McGovern and John Stallman) were the best! This was a perfect program, with a great mix of activities and free time. Besides the listed activities listed in the program, there were several other highlights -- the Pacific Tsunami Museum (and lecture by Dr. Dudley) in Hilo, the presentation at the Hawaii Wildlife Center at Kaanapali, the drive on Saddle Road, whale sightings, and much more. Food was overall excellent (try guri-guri!). Accommodations were very nice, with incredible water views at four of the five places stayed. This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and I highly recommend it. Two suggestions, if you are considering this trip: (1) arrive a day early in Hilo. The hotel is great with an incredible view and great nearby activities, plus it helps to recover from the long, long flight to Hawaii, and (2) bring water shoes. Although there were many sandy beaches, the lagoon at Kona, the snorkeling experience and the beach / swimming pond at Lydgate State Park required water shoes to cope with the lava rocks.

The "On the Road: Best of Hawaii, Maui, Kauai and Oahu" 20-day program from which I just returned was the best (of seven) Road Scholar trips I have taken. It exceeded my expectations. Tour leaders Susan McGovern and John Stallman were superb!

A trip of a lifetime. Our program leader and her husband were dynamic, gifted educators. They were skilled at immersing us in the history, culture, volcanic activity, flora and fauna. An added bonus for us was the fact that the participants quickly bonded which made for a most pleasant trip and a somewhat sad departure.
