Kayaks are full on sea kayaks with either skegs or foot controlled rudders. These are sit-in, not sit-on boats. We will have 1 tandem along and the rest will be solo boats. Some have larger cockpit openings for larger girths. All paddles, PFDs, bilge pumps, throw ropes, spray skirts are also provided. Participants must be mobile and walk up to two miles over uneven surfaces. Kayaking takes place on still water lakes and one lazy river, 3 - 5 hours daily. Entry to the water is from beaches.
Enjoy a self-serve breakfast at the Lodge offering a variety of healthy options: generally a hot option (eggs, oatmeal, hot cereal, etc.) fresh fruit bowls, yogurts, local maple syrup, variety of breads.
Gather on the porch at 9 am and head for the water in Lodge buses. Our fleet of kayaks follows behind on two custom trailers. Thus our series of day kayaking trips gets underway. Transits to the water vary between 15 minutes and one hour. Each day's trip has a different theme. On this first morning we review equipment, safety and technique and then push off into Lake Memphremagog. After exploring some of the storied shoreline of this gorgeous lake we come to shore for our picnic lunch.
We meet for a bag lunch at a pre-designated spot.
After lunch we return to the water. Kayaking continues; after about 2 more hours on the water we head to the meditative grounds of the abbey at St. Benoit du Lac for a visit. This is a Benedictine Monastery. Featured in Gourmet magazine (September 2002) here is made the best Blue cheese in all of North America. Gregorian chant (depending on schedule) follows and upon exiting the building we return to Glen Sutton. We are generally back at the lodge between 4:30 and 5 pm.
Dinner at 6 pm. Drinks before dinner if so desired. The lodge is a B.Y.O.B establishment. Alcoholic beverages are not served on-site but participants are welcome to bring their own.
Evening lectures commence at 7:30 pm. Topics might include Heart Healthy Living, Canadian History, American Invasions of Canada (1775 - 1871), Quebec Politics Since the Quiet Revolution, The Gerry Bull Story, Natural History, Native Indigenous History or a private musical concert. Each week has one free evening where guests can sample our world-class movie collection, play bridge or sample some local theatre.
