At a Glance

Centuries ago, the Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) people left their homes in the canyons and mesas of Southwest Colorado in search of a different life. Archaeologists have studied these dwellings and the possessions they left behind for clues to understanding their culture. Working at the McElmo Canyon Research Institute, you will assist with the classification, cataloging and protection of ancient artifacts from sites on the property while you learn to identify and appreciate the remarkable lives of these ancient people. Tour the curation facility at the Anasazi Heritage Center, headquarters for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and spend a day at Mesa Verde National Park with your archaeologist guide to exercise your new insights.

Small Group
Love to learn and explore in a small-group setting? These adventures offer small, personal experiences with groups of 10 to 24 participants.

Best of all, you'll ...

  • Learn from archaeologists about the Ancestral Pueblo people and the basics of artifact recognition.
  • Explore artifacts from right on site — and open a box to find out what artifacts are really inside!
  • Spend an evening with representatives of the Navajo and Ute tribes who will demonstrate music, dance and discuss their experiences in the modern world.

General Notes

McElmo Canyon Research Institute / Kelly Place B & B has been excavating important archaeological sites on the property since the 1960s. You will be able to do a different type of "excavation" of information by assisting archaeologists in repackaging the artifacts and updating the data for future research of the deep past.
