Fantastic hiking trip … great trails, great cultural and historical info and sites, info on natural history too. great food, interesting restaurants … lovely lodging in Trogir and Makarska. five stars overall and five star Tamara our guide made it so. she was outstanding . personable, intelligent, informative and charming. our second guide (can’t remember his name because writing this review so late … maybe daño?). was very good too.
have been on 6 road scholar trips and this was my 4th hiking one and Tamara stands out as a truly great guide.

Great program with good mix of activities. We got a taste of the local culture and history as well as hiking. Group leader, Sandra, was very knowledgeable and great at communicating. Due to extreme weather conditions we weren't able to hike for 2 days, but she kept us informed and arranged for interesting alternative activities. Daniel was a great hiking lead.
The size of the group (12) was perfect. I would encourage Road Scholar not to limit it to no more than that.
I really appreciated that Sandra was aware of my need to avoid gluten and worked with the eating venues to ensure that I always had an option.

The Seaside Hikes in Croatia was a wonderful trip, full of beauty and learning!

If you like to hike and learn about the history and culture of the Croatian Seaside. We had challenging hikes, great meals that featured local cuisine and excellent presentations that gave insight into local traditions. This program did this and much more!

This trip has it all: stunning landscapes, good hiking, fascinating history, and terrific food. The educational content was excellent; we learned a great deal about Croatia and the Balkans. If you're lucky enough to have Tamara as your guide, you've hit the jackpot. Five stars!

Road Scholar provides a positive vehicle for global citizens to meet, learn and develop regard for other countries, customs and cultures.

Tamara was an EXCELLENT Tour Leader. Her knowledge of the culture and history of Croatia was amazing. She is extremely smart and is an incredible ambassador for the country. The hikes were challenging but rewarding. I would highly recommend this trip to active trekers!

This was a fabulous trip. The guides were terrific and the country is gorgeous. The only thing I would have to say is that it had less hiking than the 3 other "2 hikers" rating trips I took. I would consider this a 1 hiker rating.
However, I was not disappointed!

The culture and hiking trails of Croatia's Dalmation coast was a perfect combination of adventure and enrichment. It was absolutely breathtaking! I have been on several hiking trips but was drawn to the Seaside Hikes for both of those reasons.

This was an amazing trip. Beautiful and fascinating country with friendly people, good food and amazing cities and countryside to explore. Excellent tour guides, very comfortable accommodations. The other participants were interesting and friendly and I loved getting to know them. I would highly recommend this trip.

Incredible scenic beauty, lovely hikes and experiences, and a truly fabulous leader.

Along with the many other positive reviews and five star ratings for this trip, I can only add my “I second that.” Croatia, specifically the Dalmatian coast, in and of itself is breathtaking, but to experience it through hiking, boating excursions, incredible culinary experiences, and a richly diverse itinerary was fantastic. When you add the guiding duo of Tamara and Daniel to a group of very enthusiastic and knowledgeable fellow hikers, a simply memorable and wonderful time is guaranteed to be yours.

Visit Croatia! You will not be disappointed. Sandra and Daniel, our group leaders, will make you feel welcome. The people of Croatia are welcoming and friendly. The scenery is gorgeous with the mountains on one side and the coast of the Adriatic Sea on the other. Bring your swimsuit and take a dip in the Adriatic. You will be glad you did.

A really wonderful trip with a great variety of activities and exceptionally terrific guides.
Kudos to both Sandra and Daniel. Accommodations were comfortable and in the case of our stay in Makarska, particularly appreciated for both the rooms with lovely views and the meals at the hotel.
The balance of planned activities and free time was perfect-and nice attention to flexibilty for hiking that took into account the skill level of all the group members.
Sandra and Daniel provided really good talks and information about Croatia as we progressed through the various places we visited. In addition the two "expert" lectures on the history of the conflicts in the Balkans and the explanation of the archeology museum in Narona were above and beyond and much appreciated.

This trip was an unexpected delight and completely satisfying in all areas: the hiking, history and culture, wonderful guides and fellow travelers.
— Review left May 15, 2025
A dream trip! Excellent and extremely knowledgeable guides (thank you, Sandra and Daniel!), delicious food and wine, fun hikes and boat rides, beautiful national parks (wild flowers and birdsong!), and a wonderous variety of cultural experiences. I would highly recommend this trip specifically and also Croatia. It's a beautiful country with a fascinating history. April and May were perfect months to visit for comfortable hiking weather. I highly recommend arriving early in Split to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park for a couple days before in meeting the tour in Trogir. I would visit Croatia again!

This trip was an outstanding experience that added to my understanding of Croation history. I would highly reccomend it!
— Review left May 14, 2025
This was an absolutely delightful experience driven largely by the passion and knowledge of the the trip leaders, Tamara and Daniel. The hiking offered many delightful views of the coast and the mountain terrain that we would not have experienced otherwise. Our trip offered many experiences in addition to the hiking: museums, cooking demo, beach time, stargazing, stone masons school, archaeology, so many wonderful discoveries.

An exceptional, multifaceted outdoor, culinary and historical experience that you could not begin to replicate on your own.

A great experience for those who like hiking beautiful scenery and culture at the same time! Great leadership and a fun tour.
— Review left October 18, 2024
This program took us to many wonderful natural sites for hikes and walks. The included lunches at local spots were memorable. The group leaders, Sandra and Daniel, were fantastic. Also learned a lot about Croatia even though the program is listed as a hiking adventure. It was well organized and perhaps a bit jammed-packed with experiences resulting in a few very long days. But never a problem to skip an activity if you want more relaxation, and there were alternatives provided on many of the longer or more difficult hikes for those not feeling physically able but also not wanting to stay in the hotel zone for the day.
— Review left October 13, 2024
I highly recommend the Croatia trip. It was a beautiful experience…excellent leader and instructor whose passion for their beautiful country was contagious. Lovely hotels, food, field trips, hikes, and lectures.
— Review left October 12, 2024
This was a glorious trip! I can't imagine a more spectacular place for spending time outside hiking than the Dalmatian coast. Sandra and Daniel were great guides shepherding us agilely on both rocky and gentle slopes and arranging terrific local lunches enroute. They also graciously accommodated individual requests. An all-round terrific RS trip which I highly recommend for active seniors!

We thoroughly enjoyed "Seaside Hikes in Croatia". The Dalmatian coast is spectacularly beautiful, with its close offshore islands and mountain peaks rising above 4000 ft within a few miles of the sea in some areas (e.g. behind Makarska, the longest-duration home base of the trip). The nature hikes were selected to be interestingly varied and scenic (the Krka waterfalls are GORGEOUS), and the historical strolls through the major old towns of Trogir, Split, and Dubrovnik were fascinating and informative. And there were several fun boat rides thrown in. Guides Sandra and Daniel did a great job in selecting the activities (including the stops to break up the couple travel days -- there were no unduly long driving periods) and in finding delightful, off-the-beaten-path places for delicious lunches, featuring some traditional Croatian cooking techniques and recipes. Sandra handled her lead guide duties with great enthusiasm and personability, and she went above and beyond in dealing with my challenging dietary restrictions, speaking in advance with the chefs or hosts everywhere we went to ensure that appropriate accommodations were made. Very greatly appreciated! We would say that the portion of the days spent actively hiking was a bit less than we expected from the description, but each day was filled with interesting experiences with a congenial group of travelers. Highly recommended; five stars.

An outstanding trip! A well-planned and organized hike through the history, culture, geography and cuisine of the Dalmatian coast.
— Review left October 3, 2024
I had a great experience during this trip. The itinerary chosen by Road Scholars allowed me to learn about the culture of this wonderful country. Our guides, Daniel and Sandra, were excellent in guiding us in a safe and informative way.
Sandra has a wide knowledge of the geography and history of her country and presented them to us in a comprehensive and interesting approach. Daniel showed us his excellent sense of humor and guided us, giving us confidence, especially those who needed more preparation for the extensive but beautiful hikes.
The selection of places for the meals was also outstanding. In my case, since I anticipated having a lactose intolerance, Sandra went above and beyond in giving me individualized care for my dietetic restriction, e.g., substituting ice cream for a nice fruit plate.
Nader, the bus driver, made us feel very comfortable when he waited at the airport for our arrival from the USA.
I general, I feel very satisfied with what was offered during this extraordinary trip.

This was my first trip to Europe and it did not disappoint. Tamara and Daniel were beyond excellent. The hiking portion took us to quaint villages, secret castle hideaways, mountain peaks and crystal clear beaches. Hard to believe there is still an unspoiled place like this left in the world. The water is so clean, you can drink it from the tap. The photos posted on RS site don't do it justice. It's so much prettier. Several host families invited us into their homes for traditional Croatian food and that was incredible. The itinerary was diverse. You could never accomplish everything we did on your own in 14 days . An unbelievable experience. 5 stars

Tamara and Daniel could not have been better guides. They were very accommodating to requests and individual needs. They fostered positive relationships between the participants. If you love hiking this is a great trip for you!

The Seaside Hiking in Croatia was a wonderful trip. It is a beautiful country and I learned a lot about its long and interesting history. We had very interesting cultural experiences. From the local singing to the island of Brac and the Stone Mason school, the archeological find of a temple of Augustus, the making of an ancient food Sopartnik, the walled cities and all the wonderful olive oil and wine. And much more.

The southern coast of Croatia: a narrow strip of stone and greenery bordered on the East by sheer rock rising nearly vertically to the Daric Alps interior; a strip dotted with olive groves and vineyards and small villages clinging to that strip of land; a place where the border to the West is the edge of the Adriatic Sea festooned with flocks of boats and possessed of endless views out over the crystal-clear water to the over 1100 islands paralleling that coast. A Dream Experience.

This was a fabulous trip - the country is beautiful, the trip is well organized and has a nice balance between hikes and sightseeing. The guides were wonderful. Tamara, the guide who stayed with us the entire trip, was super friendly, well-organized, very knowledgeable about Croatia's history, and simply a really nice person. I consider it a privilege of have gotten to know her over the course of the trip. Danial, our bus driver, and sometimes hike leader, was also great and they made a good team. I loved everything about this program.

Country is beautiful. The guides are terrific and knowledgeable and show great pride in the country that they live in and the area that they were born in. Weather becomes hot in June so might recommend earlier time and some cities were very crowded but it gave true picture of what life is like in the cities. Meals at people's houses were great and all the locals are so welcoming. Usually did not see other people on the hikes. I definitely
recommend this trip. #4 trip with Road Scholar and #8 for my wife.

Wonderful tour leaders in a beautiful country. Opportunity to hike scenic hills every day.

What a wonderful trip! We had the best tour guide in Sandra Samanovic. She was knowledgeable, caring and full of love for Croatia so ready to share with all the participants. A few of the participants including me had special dietary needs and Sandra went out of her way to make sure we were all taken care of. Our other guide/bus driver Daniel Jovic was wonderful as well. He shared his love of his beautiful hometown of Makarska.
The special out of the way restaurants and locals homes they took us for lunches were one better than the next. Truly outstanding!
What made it extra special was the fact Daniel and Sandra have been working together for almost 10 years so their friendship really highlighted how well they worked together, making everyone even more comfortable and relaxed.
The history of Croatia as seen in all the different places we visited and experts brought in were so special allowing us to really connect with Croatia. Thank you!

Excellent program and leadership. Stunningly beautiful area with friendly people. Always felt safe and valued. Caution others not to over estimate their physical abilities as parts of this trip were physically strenuous.

Our truly outstanding guide, Sandra, as well as our driver/assistant guides Mario and Daniel, were all knowledgeable, well-organized, and had a wonderful sense of Croatian humor and warmth. Our small group of 16 fun and friendly fellow Road Scholars made for a memorable trip. Our days were filled with great hikes and loads of other interesting, educational, and tasty experiences as well as free time to explore on our own. One of my favorite solo adventures was to the Red History Museum in Dubrovnik (located on Gruz Port just a short bus ride from our hotel and the old town.) The exhibits and interactive experiences provided a glimpse into everyday life during Yugoslavia’s Communist era. To get a feel for family life and customs in Croatia today, (before the trip) I watched many of the entertaining short videos prepared by a Croatian family (Royal Croatian Tours- YouTube). Covid and colds floated among our group throughout the trip (the new normal) so I was glad I’d brought masks and meds. This was definitely a favorite among my many great Road Scholar trips!

The guides/driver were both exceptional: Tamara and Daniel provided a wealth of information regarding Croatia, the places we visited, historical information, great stories, etc. Excellent locations chosen. Good mix of hiking plus touring in cities. Really loved the small hillside villages. Really nice local food lunches.

Seaside Hikes in Croatia is a program of great variety. The hikes are not particularly long or strenuous, but give you a good understanding of the Dalmatian coast. But the other activities such a wandering through old towns, seeing cooking demonstrations, and visiting museums give you an interesting perspective on Croatia as a whole and its remarkable history. It was one of my favorite Road Scholar programs!

This trip was a wonderful introduction to Croatia. We explored its natural beauty, history and culture. The guides Daniel Jovic and Tamara Maric were excellent.
— Review left September 29, 2023
Visiting Croatia was a wonderful experience and somewhat off the radar. We enjoyed the land, food and the Croatian people. Also was exposed to its long history and intend to delve into further to get an even better understanding.
— Review left June 9, 2023
This trip was one of my favorites. The country is amazing--the mountains were magnificent. I still can't put into words how they affected me. The Adriatic is gorgeous and the entire trip is one beautiful vista after another. Finally, the history and medieval and Roman archeology was amazing. Yes, I am using superlatives but Croatia requires it. The trip is a perfect balance of activity, culture and dining. A typical day would be a hike, a meal at a local spot, some free time to enjoy the area and finally a meal together. Great combination.
— Review left June 4, 2023
This Road Scholar trip was fabulous. The hiking was fantastic. Meals provided in people's home brought us closer to the culture of Croatia. I learned about the Croatian history going back more than 2,000 year. The beauty of the Dalmatian coast is incredibly memorable.

Croatia is a beautiful and interesting country. This hiking program let us see many of the popular sites (Unesco World Heritage Sites) as well as hidden treasures such as off the path hamlets with homemade meals. Tamarra, Sandra and Daniel have put together an incredible adventure. They know their country and generiously share it with Road Scholar participants. Thank you!

Just a wonderful experience. Our leader Tamara was excellent. Every aspect was excellent. Historical site, cultural events, hikes, swimming in the beautiful Adriatic. Was superb in every aspect

This program is a perfect balance of spirited activity and learning about the culture and history of Croatia, while enjoying beautiful vistas and good food! We appreciated our guides - they were professional, knowledgeable and took care of everything so well. Be prepared for the strenuous hikes, which do require sturdy hiking shoes/boots. Going later in the season meant the crowds were less in Dubrovnik, which made touring the city very enjoyable. We had free time to swim in the Adriatic sea or sit with a cup of coffee. The food is healthy and delicious and the restaurants accommodated my vegetarian requests.
I highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to learn about this beautiful country while staying active.

I was sure I’d love my Road Scholar holiday, but Seaside Hikes in Croatia exceeded all expectations. The guides were exceptional group leaders. I enjoyed the pacing of activity and the educational content was fascinating.

Seaside hikes in Croatia was one of the best group travel experiences of my life. Accommodations, itineraries, educational programming, and most significant, the skill and quality of our travel guides was extraordinary.
— Review left October 5, 2022
The country is beautiful, the people are friendly and accepting. As hiking trip, I found it was enjoyable, not exhausting. I usually slog along last on the uphill trails, (my superpower is downhill) but these were just fine. I even was in with the group, a new experience for me.

I have just returned from this wonderful trip to Croatia. My sisters were my companions on this trip and they have both received evaluation forms. I, however, do not receive program emails from Road Scholar and have been unable to rectify this issue. I understand that a "no return" of a program evaluation records as a zero and I do NOT wish this to be the case. The trip was fantastic and the two guides were the best we have ever had. But I do have some things I would like to register with Road Scholar regarding the accommodation for active vegetarians who require alternate protein sources in their diet.
Please send me a copy of the evaluation via email and via snail mail so that I can complete this form:

Seaside Hikes in Croatia was made particularly rewarding due to the fun and personable local guides Daniel and Sandra. The program offers a great opportunity to acquaint oneself with the culture, history, and countryside of Croatia. Without the local expertise, I don't think we could have done it on our own.

A nice mix of hiking and site seeing.

This tour provided excellent learning opportunities from our guides Daniel and Ivana, who live in towns we visited. Every day was different. We hiked in farmland to a winery, along the sea in a forest, on an island in forest near briny lakes, on walls of an ancient city, in a small fishing village, around a series of waterfalls and wetlands, in ancient towns of Trogir, Split and Dubrovnik, up a windy mountain to peek over at a town on the Adriatic. We enjoyed boat rides on a river in a national park, in canals near an architectural dig, on a ferry to and from an island. We drank local liquors and wines, dined on local foods.
If you love hiking, nature, history, learning about other cultures and being in a country where English is fairly widely spoken, you likely will enjoy this trip.

I was expecting beautiful views and got drop dead gorgeous! Each day seemed better than the last. Any active hiker should consider this Seaside Hiking in Croatia as a must do destination! I've been on many Road Scholar trips, however, this was the most fulfilling to date. Our trip leaders Daniel and Tamara were a great team, providing many memorable moments and enriching experiences!

Extremely well organized with exceptional leaders; accommodations were comfortable and the food was satisfying. I believe the "rating system" of activity level needs to be more defined. This was my third trip and will look for another journey that is more challenging.
