From the Archives: Our First Classrooms
In celebration of our golden anniversary, we’re looking back at some of our earliest classrooms. It was here that some of the first Road Scholars participated in our fledgling programs. These photographs offer snapshots into history and the Road Scholar story, and capture some of the spirit of lifelong learning.

An early group of Road Scholars smile for the camera at Appalachian State University in June, 1979.

Just one month later, in July of 1979, this group of Road Scholars would study at Mississippi State University.

The summer of 1979 would be a busy one across America, as this large group of Road Scholars poses on the steps of Iowa Wesleyan College’s Department of Art in August.

The next summer, even more Road Scholars came out to Fairmont State College in West Virginia.

Learning was also in session at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill — these smiling Road Scholars gathered in June, 1980.

Road Scholar was in its ninth year when this group explored subjects at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia.

In the early days, Road Scholars stayed in college dorms, like this one in Oregon.

Eventually, learning moved out of college classrooms and into other settings, such as this adventure to Coronado National Monument.
