Every day in households across the country, family caregivers quietly show up — often without recognition, without pay and without pause. They manage medications, prepare meals, juggle appointments and offer comfort through the toughest moments. Their days are long, their hearts are full and their love is unwavering. This November, during National Family Caregivers Month, Road Scholar honors their strength, resilience and compassion.
Family caregivers are the invisible backbone of our nation’s care system. According to AARP, 63 million — one in four American adults — are serving as a caregiver in 2025. This number represents a 45% growth in the last decade.
Caregivers walk a demanding path — many alone — balancing the weight of emotional, physical and financial challenges while pouring their time, heart and strength into supporting someone they love. So often, they set their own needs and dreams aside in service to someone they love.
At Road Scholar, we see them and we hear them. We honor the love and perseverance behind every act of their care. And while November shines a spotlight on caregivers, our commitment to supporting and celebrating them extends all year long.
Helping Caregivers for 10 Years
In 2015, Road Scholar launched Caregiver Grants to give family caregivers the gift of respite, renewal and discovery through learning adventures. For over a decade, this heartfelt initiative has provided much-needed respite and renewal to hundreds of devoted caregivers. These grants ensure that financial barriers never stand in the way of a caregiver’s opportunity to rest, recharge and grow.
Meet Three Extraordinary Caregivers
Throughout November, we’ll be sharing the stories of three remarkable Caregiver Grant recipients — Wendy, Kathryn S. and Barbara R. — each of whom dedicated themselves to caring for a loved one. Their journeys remind us how compassion — and the renewal found in adventure, learning and connection — can transform lives.
We invite you to visit our blog each week to meet these inspiring caregivers and learn how their Road Scholar experiences brought them respite, discovery and new friendships.
