Imagine: You’ve Won! What to Bring on Our Great Global Giveaway Adventure to Southern Africa

Imagine this: you open up your January 2025 Road Scholar catalog to find a golden ticket inside. You’ve won our Great Global Giveaway, our contest celebrating 50 years of Road Scholar offering seven learning adventures of a lifetime for two people, including airfare, on one of seven continents.

Now imagine the adventure that you won is a safari program in southern Africa, where you’ll have the chance to spot some of the world’s most iconic animals — like elephants and lions — while learning about conservation. When you’re preparing for an adventure of a lifetime like this, what you’ll bring is key. Here are some of our suggestions for what a Great Global Giveaway winner (or any Road Scholar) might want to bring on a safari.

Clothing With Muted Colors

Blending in is key when trying to spot animals on safari, so when packing, it would be a good idea to avoid the bright colors and pack clothes in shades of brown, gray and green. However, you’ll likely want to avoid packing clothing with a camouflage pattern — some African countries have laws prohibiting non-military members from wearing camouflage. Comfort is also key, so consider clothes that you already own that you know you can wear comfortably all day.

Binoculars

When searching the landscape for wildlife, binoculars can be a great help for spotting animals that might be far away.

Weather-Appropriate Gear

Depending on the time of year (and even the time of day), you can experience all kinds of weather in southern Africa. Double-check what the weather might be like in the area you’re visiting before you start packing, and consider packing layers so that you have options throughout your day. Rain gear, hats, sunscreen and bug spray can also be extremely handy.

Inflatable Seat Cushion

Game drives can get bumpy, so consider packing an inflatable seat cushion for the ride!

A Camera/A Portable Phone Charger

If there’s one thing you’ll want to return from your program with (besides amazing memories), it’s pictures! To ensure that you can snap photos of all the animals you’ll be searching for, pack your camera or smartphone as well as extra batteries and ways to recharge. A good option for any trip is a portable charger, which can be powered up when you have access to electricity and then brought along throughout your day in case your phone needs to recharge on the go.

Before you go, it’s also a good idea to check and make sure you have all your required documentation and required medication. You will receive information about these requirements and other packing suggestions with your program information, but you can also learn more on the program page under “Travel Information” and by consulting with your doctor.
