Traveling to Europe? Here’s What You Need to Know About ETIAS and ETA!

If you're planning a European adventure, make sure you’re up to speed with the new travel authorization systems — ETIAS for most of Europe and the UK ETA for the nations of the United Kingdom. These aren’t visas, but mandatory pre-travel authorizations that travelers from visa-exempt countries (like the U.S., Canada, Australia and others) now need to enter these regions.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is for visitors entering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s ...

  • Mandatory for visa-free travelers (e.g., from the U.S., EU and others)
  • Valid for two years or until your passport expires
  • Designed with a stay limit of up to six months per visit

You can apply online or via the UK ETA mobile app.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) applies to 30 European countries in the Schengen Zone. It’s ...

  • Intended to enhance border security while still allowing hassle-free travel for tourists, business travelers and transit passengers
  • Expected to be required in late 2025
  • Valid for three years or until your passport expires
  • Designed with a stay limit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period

Applications are not being accepted yet, but the ETIAS website is live for real-time updates.

Key Things to Know

Apply at least a few weeks before your travels — most approvals come quickly, but delays can happen.

Also, it’s digital — you won’t need a physical document, just make sure your passport matches the info you enter.

Before you pack your bags, get your ETA sorted for travels in 2025 and beyond, and stay tuned for more information on ETIAS.
