Imagine: You’ve Won! What You’ll Discover on Our Great Global Giveaway Adventure to South America
Imagine this: you open up your January 2025 Road Scholar catalog to find a golden ticket inside. You’ve won our Great Global Giveaway, our contest celebrating 50 years of Road Scholar offering seven learning adventures of a lifetime for two people, including airfare, on one of seven continents.
Now imagine the adventure that you won is a journey through South America, where you’ll get a taste of multiple countries and many cultural and historic highlights, like Machu Picchu, Iguazu Falls and the Christ the Redeemer statue. It will be a true odyssey across the continent — here are our top sites along this journey for you to look forward to!
Rio de Janeiro
Your first stop along this educational journey is the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue as well as Tijuca National Park. Stroll along Rio’s waterfront to admire murals and visit a samba school, where you’ll learn about Rio’s Carnival celebrations and how they intertwine with the history of samba.
Iguazú Falls
Part of another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Iguazú Falls lies on the border between Argentina and Brail. You’ll be able to experience this unforgettable stretch of waterfalls from both countries, each offering a unique vantage point. Over 250 feet tall, the falls produce consistent water sprays — prepare to be amazed and wear clothes that can get wet!
Buenos Aires
A stop in Argentina’s capital city will bring a wealth of cultural gems. Visit San Telmo, the city’s oldest neighborhood, and walk its cobbled stone streets lined with antiques boutiques and filled with bohemian ambiance. Head outside of the city to the countryside to learn about the local life of estancias (colonial ranches) and gauchos (Argentinian cowboys). Scheduled independent time will give you the chance to visit the city’s museums.
Valparaiso
Chile’s second-largest city offers something new to discover around every turn of its twisting streets. Explore the Historic Quarter (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and discover the storied past behind this port city. Just outside of Valparaiso lies Viña del Mar, a resort filled with varied architectural styles and lush gardens, which gives the city its nickname, “Ciudad Jardín" (Garden City).
Machu Picchu
It’s both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and regarded as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World — Machu Picchu ranks high on most must-see lists, and it is one of the final stops on this South American odyssey. Learn about the history of Machu Picchu, built centuries ago by the Inca Empire and still standing more than 7,000 feet above sea level.
