Activity note: Hotel check-in available from 4:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration 4:00-5:00 p.m. After you have your room assignment, come to the Road Scholar table in the lobby to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, other important information, and to learn when and where the Orientation session will take place. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation. 5:00 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Grandparents are responsible for their grandchildren during the program. If/when separate age group activities are conducted concurrently, program staff will supervise. Children are never to be left unsupervised. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: At the hotel, we’ll have a buffet meal with tea and water included; other beverages available for purchase at the hotel bar.

Evening: We’ll then gather for games and hands-on activities so everyone of both generations can work together and get to know one another better. The remainder of the evening will be at leisure. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

CNN Behind the Scenes, Coca Cola Museum, Brain Twister

Activity note: Walking less than 1 mile throughout the day indoors and outdoors; descending 8 flights of stairs at CNN building (elevator available). Getting on/off motorcoach; driving approx. 17 miles; about ½ hour each way.

Breakfast: At the hotel, the breakfast buffet offers a rotating variety of choices such as breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, French toast, oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, bagels, breads, pastries, milk, juice, coffee, tea, water.

Morning: We’ll then transfer via motorcoach to the Global Headquarters of CNN in Atlanta and go behind the scenes with personnel from the CNN Center. While here, we’ll have the opportunity to see news in the making and learn how the weather is reported with the latest equipment. Afterwards, we’ll go on a walk with our Group Leader to visit the nearby Centennial Park where we will learn about its history and features as we explore the area. Before the 1996 Olympic Games, this section of town was an eyesore. After Atlanta was approved as the host city for the Games that year, the neighborhood was transformed into a beautiful space for visitors and residents to gather and enjoy.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like at the CNN Center. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: Next, we’ll walk to the World of Coca-Cola, a museum about the history of The Coca-Cola Company (a world-renown product and staple of Atlanta), which is located adjacent to CNN Center and Centennial Park. While here, take a self-led field trip through the exhibits to experience the development of the iconic company throughout the ages. We’ll then return to the hotel.

Dinner: Hotel buffet.

Evening: In the hotel’s conference room, we’ll gather with an instructor to learn how to play a fun and creative game known as Brain Twister. It’s an activity for kids and grandparents alike and this interactive experience encourages problem solving and thinking outside the box.

Meet Zoo Animals, Fernbank Museum, Kids Zoo Overnight

Activity note: Minimal walking at Fernbank Museum as a group. Kids: Walking up to 5 miles on and off throughout the day; mostly paved but some uneven terrain, some stairs at Zoo. Driving as a group approx. 15 miles; about 1 hour. Kids: driving extra 11 miles to the Zoo; about ½ hour. Kids: Be sure to pack overnight bags before going to the museum. Overnight field trip sleeping quarters are climate controlled.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: In the hotel conference room, we’ll gather with a trained educator for a presentation on the zoo and its animal residents. We’ll even get to touch some of the few zoo animals to get us excited for our overnight at the zoo later this evening! Get ready to learn about the live animals and some of their biological characteristics as well as about conservation efforts.

Lunch: At the hotel, we’ll have a buffet meal with tea and water included; other beverages available for purchase at the bar.

Afternoon: After transferring via motorcoach to the Fernbank Museum, we will explore ancient fossils and experience the thrill of a film in the IMAX® Theatre together as a group. Then take some time on your own to enjoy interactive science exhibits and marvel at the largest dinosaurs ever discovered. Fernbank Museum isn’t just another museum—it’s a journey to another time and place. We’ll then transfer back to the hotel for dinner and to allow time for the kids to pack for their overnight adventure at the zoo.

Dinner: At the hotel, kids will enjoy a tasty pizza dinner with water and soda before transferring to the zoo with two adult leader (1 male and 1 female) chaperones, as required by the zoo for the overnight field trip. Grandparents will then transfer to a popular restaurant in downtown Atlanta for plated meals with coffee, tea, water included; other beverages available for purchase. Take advantage of an evening of adult conversation while the kids are exploring the zoo on an overnighter.

Evening: Kids only: As the sun sets and the animals settle in for the night, the fun is just beginning! Get ready for this unique overnight program packed with themed activities, behind-the-scenes experiences and up-close encounters with animals. This is the way to see the Zoo! Grandparents: At leisure. While the kids are at the zoo, the adults will be out on the town in Atlanta, GA. You may wish to remain in the city or head back to the hotel to relax.

Zoo Atlanta, Stone Mountain Night Laser Spectacular Show

Activity note: Walking about ½ mile; approx. 1.5 – 2 hours with stops; mostly paved, some uneven and grassy terrain, up and down some stairs at Zoo. Driving approx. 36 miles throughout the day; about 1.5 hours total.

Breakfast: Grandparents: Hotel buffet. Kids: At the zoo, we’ll have a breakfast bar with cereal, milk, juice, water.

Morning: Grandparents will head back to Zoo Atlanta to meet the kids as they show off what they have learned on their overnight at the zoo. You may be surprised as they lead you about and share their newfound knowledge. Kids will have access to areas that are not open to the public with their night instructors. It is a fascinating and special experience many long remember as it provides them with an appreciation for the animals, their living quarters, and the people who love and care for them. Have fun learning together and exploring how to use lab equipment such as microscopes with which to see microorganisms. We’ll then return to the hotel.

Lunch: Hotel buffet.

Afternoon: Free Time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. You may wish to take the afternoon off to enjoy the pool and let the kids recover with a nap from their overnighter at the zoo. The hotel shuttle will take you anywhere within a two mile radius. That area includes the Atlanta History Museum and the Swan House Mansion if you decide to continue your adventures in the area.

Dinner: At a favorite local restaurant a short walk from the hotel, we’ll have a plated meal with coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: We’ll then transfer via motorcoach to Stone Mountain Park where Atlanta’s famous Stone Mountain Laser Show, a spectacular performance, will create a ceiling of light right over our heads, transforming the park into a natural amphitheater. The dazzling display of neon laser lights features a variety of “characters, stories, graphics and fireworks choreographed to popular musical scores.” We’ll then return to the hotel.

Georgia Aquarium, Jazz Musicians

Activity note: Walking through Georgia Aquarium, distance dependent on personal preference; some steps (elevators are available). Driving approx. 17 miles, about ½ hour one-way.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: After transferring via motorcoach, we’ll take today to enjoy at the largest aquarium in the world, the Georgia Aquarium. The Atlanta City Passes that we will have will include multiple activities for everyone to do including everyone’s admission to the aquarium exhibits for self-led exploration, the 3D movie in the 4D theater (about fascinating marine life), a choreographed dolphin show production with animals and actors, and a “quick dip” behind the scenes with personnel from the aquarium. All of these are included in the program cost.

Lunch: At the aquarium, we’ll have buffet meals with water and soda included; other beverages available for purchase.

Afternoon: Georgia Aquarium field trip continues.

Dinner: Hotel buffet.

Evening: Two jazz musicians will join us at the hotel to explain for us the history of jazz while playing selections to enhance their presentation. Afterwards, be sure to prepare for check-out and departures in the morning.

Morning: We will get together one last time to share in some of the highlights of the week. Say goodbye to newfound friends and hello to memories that will last a lifetime.
