At a Glance
Perched on high bluffs along the Mississippi River, Vicksburg was a formidable Confederate stronghold. Despite being outnumbered, its defenders repelled Union forces led by General Grant until he resorted to a 47-day siege that ended in the city's surrender on July 4, 1863. Join author and historian Brian Altobello for an engaging exploration of the experiences of Vicksburg’s residents, the politics of command and the complex personalities of Grant and Confederate General John Pemberton.

Brian Altobello brought to life the unfortunate travails of the besieged Vicksburgians, and the assaulting Union for his audience. I learned of three new authors to look up, and what I now know about the long decline towards surrender is peppered with the graphics Mr. Altobellow shared and the insights he shared. I am really glad I was in the audience. I learned a lot and have more empathy for the vanquished South. Isn't that what's so great about learning new things? Loved the lecture!
