At a Glance

In the annals of unforgettable openings, 'Four score and seven years ago' stands as a rival to Hamlet's iconic 'To be or not to be.' As we approach the 160th anniversary of this monumental speech, delivered on November 19, 1863, join Louis Masur, author and professor, for a compelling look at Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. In just 272 words, Lincoln not only clarified the Civil War's purpose, but also redefined the very essence of the American experiment — our nation's ongoing quest for democracy and equality since its founding. In this enriching lecture, Louis will uncover the hows and whys behind Lincoln's crafting of these immortal lines. He will also explore some of the enduring myths surrounding the Address — such as the idea that Lincoln wrote it in haste or that it was not well received. There’s no better way to celebrate the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address than by examining its intricate details and everlasting impact.
