Program No. 24763RJ

At a Glance
In 1964, a year after the closing of Alcatraz, a group of Native Americans led by Sioux activists Bella Cottier and Hank Means occupied the island for 24 hours to protest the U.S. breaking their treaties. Five years later, American Indian Movement members — including Hank’s son Russell — led over 100 activists of the United Tribes to claim the island, subject to the 1868 treaty of Fort Laramie which stated abandoned or unused territories would be returned to the original inhabitants. Join writer and filmmaker James Dalessandro in a discussion about how this 19-month occupation changed public awareness of the Native American plight.
