Think you can’t take great photos with your cell phone? Think again! Join photography expert Mason Marsh for a three-day online immersion into taking impressive photos with your iPhone or Android cell phone. Learn the fundamentals of using your smartphone as a camera and get tips for lens choices and creative controls that can help you improve the quality of your photos. Gain insight into storing and organizing your photos, as well as how to share your finished masterpieces online with family and friends. Friendly group critique sessions will help you get a new perspective on your pictures — and will introduce you to other Road Scholars who share your love for picture taking with the camera in your pocket!

What You'll Learn

  • Get tips for using your smartphone’s camera settings as well as advice for editing and improving the quality of your images.
  • Learn how to organize your photos and store them so they are easy to find.
  • Enjoy opportunities to share your photos in friendly group critique sessions and find out how to share your works of art with your friends and family.

General Notes

You’ll enjoy 2-3 hours of daily instruction, discussion and/or field trips, which includes sufficient breaks throughout the program. This online program is through Zoom, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. We’ll provide a how-to guide to make sure you’ll have a hassle-free experience. This session is offered live only and will not be available on demand. Please review the daily itinerary for start and end times to ensure you won’t miss a minute of this live experience. All times are listed in the EASTERN time zone. If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly.

Getting to Know Your Phone

Activity note: Today’s session will start at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time and end at 4:00 p.m.

Afternoon: 1:00 p.m.: Orientation and Introduction (30 minutes). 1:30 p.m.: Lecture – Pocket Marvel (60 minutes). Modern smartphones are technological marvels. In this lecture we will dive into the cameras inside these tiny computers and learn the nuts and bolts of how to use them. 2:30 p.m.: Break (15 minutes). 2:45 p.m.: Lecture – Think Differently (60 minutes). Smartphone photography is computational and complicated, which requires a fresh photographic approach. We’ll break the process down to the fundamentals. 3:45 p.m.: Homework Assignment (15 minutes).

Afternoon: 1:00 p.m.: Review and Questions (30 minutes). 1:30 p.m.: Lecture – Phonography (60 minutes). From lens choice to creative controls, we will cover the tricks and techniques involved in making memorable phone photos. 2:30 p.m.: Break (15 minutes). 2:45 p.m.: Lecture – Keep It Organized (30 minutes). Managing the flood of images you’ll make takes strategy and dedicated attention. We will build a sustainable workflow that will ensure your precious images stay safe and easy to find. 3:15 p.m.: Friendly and Helpful Image Critiques (30 minutes). 3:45 p.m.: Homework Assignment (15 minutes).

Making Magic

Afternoon: 1:00 p.m.: Review and Questions (30 minutes). 1:30 p.m.: Lecture – Processing Your Images (60 minutes). Capturing great images is just the start. Using your smartphone, you’ll learn how to make those images pop with processing applications. 2:30 p.m.: Break (15 minutes). 2:45 p.m.: Lecture – Sharing is Caring (30 minutes). Once you have finished your masterpieces, you’ll want to share them with friends and family. We will explore the options for social media, printing and book publishing – all from your phone. 3:15 p.m.: Friendly and Helpful Image Critiques (30 minutes). 3:45 p.m.: Wrap-up (15 minutes).
