The only thing better than a learning adventure along Italy’s Mediterranean coast is one with your family! Explore Sorrento and its surrounding treasures, including the Path of the Gods trail and Pompeii, as you and your family learn more about Italian history and culture through immersive experiences. You’ll venture to ruins that date back thousands of years and delve into their mythology, like the remains of a Greek temple that legend says was built by Ulysses in gratitude for protection on his epic journey. Then, watch history come to life as you talk with local inlaid wood artisans and try your hand at the ancient practice of woodworking through a hands-on workshop. Afternoon free time will allow you all to continue to learn about this magical region and to bond with each other and your fellow Road Scholars!

Walking up to four miles a day; elective hiking opportunities. Extended standing during site visits with limited or no public seating. Uneven terrain, limited public handrails, unavoidable stairs, marble and terracotta flooring, cobblestones, inclines, loose gravel, dirt paths. Activity note: Hotel check-in available from 2:00 p.m. Transfer from Naples Airport to hotel is 38 miles (1 hour ride). Walking about 2 miles, approximately 1 hour.

Afternoon: After checking in to the hotel and getting your room, take some time to freshen up and relax before our first group activity. Orientation: 4:30 p.m. The Group Leaders will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Program-related transportation will be via shuttle or private motorcoach unless noted otherwise. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. Along with a local expert, we will set out for a short walk into town to see the location of banks, pharmacies, and grocery stores. We’ll then circle back to the hotel for a “Welcome to the Amalfi” reception where we will meet our Group Leaders and fellow Road Scholars.

Dinner: In the hotel restaurant.

Evening: At leisure. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

Italian Class, Sorrento Walk, Cooking at the Agriturismo

Activity note: Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving about 35 miles throughout the day, approximately 1.5 hours total riding time. Walking up to 2 miles; uneven, cobblestoned streets, some inclines from motorcoach drop-off point to farm restaurant. Walking and other free time activities according to personal choice.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Impariamo l’italiano! We will gather in the meeting space with our Group Leaders for a general introduction to Italian. We’ll learn how to greet people, order a coffee, ask directions, and more for when the kids meet up with local students. After a short break, we’ll take our shuttle and set out with our Group Leader for a walking field trip to explore Sorrento. Among the highlights will be the Marina Grande, the characteristic old port where it’s not uncommon to see fishermen bringing in the day’s catch or repairing their nets.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to have what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Shuttle service will be available to go back to the hotel.

Afternoon: Free time. This period of time has been set aside for your personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. In the late afternoon, from our hotel, we’ll board our motorcoach and head out on a panoramic drive through the Sorrento countryside. First, we'll stop at an “agriturismo” — a farm restaurant — and observe a demonstration of caciotta and mozzarella cheeses forming from a bowl of fresh milk and rennet. Next, the host will describe the process of making olive oil and wine. We will also learn the art of the tarantella, a traditional southern Italian folk dance. Then, tie up the apron lent to you by the cook and assist in pizza preparation.

Dinner: At the agriturismo, a sampler of appetizers and an aperitivo will start off our enjoyment of dinner and watch everyone show off their new tarantella dance moves!

Evening: We will return to our hotel by motorcoach, after which the evening will be at leisure.

Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, Free Time

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving about 50 miles, approximately 2 hours total riding time. Walking up to 4 miles, approximately 2.5 hours; uneven cobblestone and dirt paths, steps, inclines, slippery when wet. Except at entrance/exit, no benches or other places to sit in the archaeological park.

Lunch: At a local restaurant.

Afternoon: We’ll reboard our motorcoach after the field trip and travel toward Mt. Vesuvius, where the Group Leader will accompany the group along the side of the volcano. The motorcoach will take the group about two-thirds of the way up the crater; the rest of the path will be on foot. Upon returning to Sant'Agata by motorcoach, there will be some time to relax and dip in the pool to cool off after a busy day.

Dinner: On your own to enjoy what you like. Shuttle service will be available for those wishing to dine in Sorrento.

Evening: At leisure.

Punta Campanella, Mythology & Italy Today Lectures

Activity note: Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving about 10 miles, over 1/2 hour total riding time. Walking up to 2 miles, approximately 2 hours; uneven cobblestone and dirt paths, steps, inclines, no handrails, slippery when wet.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: From our hotel, we will take a motorcoach to Punta Campanella, the extreme point of the Sorrentine peninsula, to explore the remains of a Greek temple and Saracen Tower. The cults of Athena and Minerva have their imprints along this stretch of coastline. According to legend, Ulysses built the temple on the furthest edge of the peninsula as a sign of gratitude for protection during his journey, particularly in assisting his escape from the Sirens. During the 14th century, a tower was built on the site of the former temple to help guard the area from pirates. Our motorcoach will then pick us up to return to our hotel, where we will have some independent time for a swim or relaxation.

Lunch: On your own to enjoy what you like.

Afternoon: Free time. This period of time has been set aside for your personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Late in the afternoon, we will gather in the hotel conference room for a double lecture with a local expert. The first lecture will discuss Greek and Roman mythology and how they influenced the Sorrentine peninsula. After a coffee and snack break, the lecture will continue on critical issues facing Italy today, followed by Q&A. We’ll learn about the country's healthcare system, education, religion, and women's issues. We’ll also hear about how Italy continues to undergo rapid economic and societal change. After a coffee break, we will turn our topic of discussion to the political history of Italy from the 1860s when the country was unified, through the years of fascism and World War II, to Berlusconi and the latest government coalition.

Dinner: At a local restaurant.

Evening: At leisure.

Isle of Capri, Grottoes, Faraglioni Rocks

Activity note: Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving about 7 miles from hotel to marina. Getting on/off a ferry to island of Capri, riding approximately 1 hour total. Funicular to town of Capri, taxis to town of Anacapri. Driving 8 miles, under 1/2 hour riding time. Walking up to 3 miles; uneven terrain, cobblestones, inclines.

Breakfast: At the hotel restaurant.

Morning: We’ll take a short motorcoach ride to the Sorrento marina, then board a jetfoil to the island of Capri for a full day on the Mediterranean’s most lush island while roaming intricate cobblestone lanes and chic neighborhoods. From the dock in Capri, we’ll board a private boat with our local expert to begin our visits to some of the island’s famous grottoes, entering through the Faraglioni Rocks. During our visits to the White, Red, and Green Grottoes, we learn about their formation as well as stalactites, stalagmites, and other natural wonders. From the Capri marina, we'll ride the funicular, or cable railway, up to the town of Capri, where we'll stop for lunch.

Lunch: At a local restaurant.

Afternoon: We’ll have some time for independent exploration. You might like to stroll along the scenic Via Tragara to the Belvedere for breathtaking views of the Faraglioni rock formations, or savor a gelato or beverage at a café. We’ll rendezvous in the main square of Capri town at an announced time. We’ll reboard the jetfoil that will return to the mainland by late afternoon and ride back to the hotel by motorcoach. Back at the hotel, the kids will have time to share a gelato and practice their Italian with local schoolchildren

Dinner: On your own to enjoy what you like. Shuttle service will be available for those wishing to dine in Sorrento.

Path of the Gods, Free Time

Activity note: Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving about 40 miles throughout the day, approximately 2 hours total riding time. Walking up to 5 miles, approximately 3 hours; rough terrain with uneven cobblestone, rock, and dirt paths, steps, some inclines, no handrails, slippery when wet.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We’ll enjoy a final adrenaline-filled morning as we venture out for a walk along the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei). Our motorcoach will take us to the start of the trail, beginning in the mountainside town of Agerola, trekking all the way down to Nocelle, a town situated above Positano. During our 3-hour walk, we will trek along a dirt or rock pathway that winds alongside the mountainside, offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and islands below. At the end of our walk, our motorcoach will take us back to our hotel for the afternoon.

Inlaid Wood Artistry & Workshop, Free Time

Activity note: Getting on/off a hotel shuttle. Walking up to 2 miles; uneven, cobblestoned streets. Elevator in the museum.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We start the day by taking the hotel shuttle into Sorrento to meet one of the many inlaid wood artisans who carry out the tradition of creating the most amazing wooden objects and sculptures. We will also explore the on-site museum, dedicated to wood-crafting and Sorrentine history. Then, try your hand at woodworking during a hands-on workshop to learn the basics of this ancient local tradition.

Lunch: On your own to enjoy what you like. Shuttle service will be available back to the hotel.

Afternoon: Free time. This period of time has been set aside for your personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Enjoy some time at leisure this morning to swim, play, or relax at the property. In the late afternoon, we’ll board our motorcoach to head to dinner.

Dinner: At a local restaurant. Share favorite experiences with new Road Scholar friends during our farewell dinner.

Evening: At leisure. Prepare for check-out and departure in the morning.
