At a Glance

Meet the furred and flippered marine mammals of the Northern Pacific, including the massive northern elephant seal, the rambunctious California sea lion, the mellow harbor seal and the iconic sea otter. Seals and sea lions are mammals that live in both worlds — shoreline and sea, and are adapted in quite remarkable ways to their truly amphibious lifestyle. Sea otters have an entirely different strategy and evolutionary lineage. Learn about their engaging behavioral repertoire for feeding, maternal care and breeding. Dorris shares her perspective from hands-on lab research and years of field observations in Monterey Bay, California.
