At a Glance

Jewish life ended in Barcelona at the end of the 1300s and the community of that time was forced to abandon their cemetery. A century after the first Jewish families began to re-settle in Spain, the quest to connect the past with the present, integrate history into the local collective memory, and pay respect to a historical landmark is a challenging effort. Obtaining historical landmark designation for this ancient cemetery in Barcelona, along with the research necessary to uncover its history while discovering what happened to other cemeteries in Spain, is something we can all learn from in this lecture. Delve into the world of heritage, protection, recovery, rehabilitation and restoration, and find out how it relates to one very special, ancient cemetery.
