At a Glance

In 2022 we celebrate a wondrous feat — the fifth centenary of the conclusion of Magellan’s and Elcano’s voyage of circumnavigation (1519 to 1522). During those three years, men of exceptional courage, endurance and skill undertook a dangerous voyage into the unknown. We will embark with their intrepid crew on an epic journey round the world in three parts. In this third session, we will learn about the crucial decision that led to the circumnavigation of the world. This would inaugurate what has been termed as “the first globalization." After the ships finally arrived to the Moluccas and filled their holds with clove, the prized spice that was one of the main objectives of the initial expedition, Elcano decided that the Victoria — the ship under his command — would leave to Spain following the western route. This was a perilous route as it would have to sail through waters under Portuguese control. On September 6, 1522, eighteen crew members, “skinny as men ever were," accompanied by three islanders, arrived to Sanlúcar de Barrameda after traveling around the globe. Please note: The three lectures celebrating aspects of the voyage are offered separately and will require separate registration.
